When I left the rez for college, I experienced such intense culture shock…and then profound rage and grief. Things that I had understood to be “normal” (poverty, young people dying, violence, despair, etc) were not experienced by my classmates. I began therapy on campus because I was struggling…

My kids came down with a respiratory illness that necessitated a late-night ER run. It reminded me of the most eerily beautiful and terrible thing my late Lakota grandma told me. I’d visit her in her last years, talking to her about family and rez history. She talked about the rolling epidemics…

Today is the anniversary of the assault that almost killed me at 20. I used to spend this day in grief, mourning who I’d been and who I could have become. This year, I had to be reminded of what this day means to me. It had become just another day. And that, to me, is the ultimate victory.

I was born less than two weeks before Christmas and the nurses in the hospital thought it’d be cute to stick baby me in a stocking to present me as a “gift” to my parents post-nursery. My parents claim that I was very mad about the stocking…and that that’s the origin of my attitude problem.

It’s a huge red flag to me when someone responds to the possibility that they may be wrong as a personal attack on their character rather than the baseline, default condition of human life. You can only have real dialogue when both parties are able to humor that very idea without ego interfering.

150 years ago, my great-great grandpa was at Greasy Grass. He’d later surrender with Crazy Horse at Fort Robinson, but our family never truly surrendered. His son would marry a Wounded Knee Massacre survivor and resistance continued. My sons are little Lakota miracles. Their joy is resistance.

It is incredibly healing to be the parent you wish you’d had. To say the things you wish you’d been told. To relate deeply to your child because somewhere inside, you’re still that child wanting to be comforted and held. Decades pass but we all want to know that it really is going to be okay.

My youngest was hospitalized for a rare illness after weeks spent in and out of clinics trying to figure out what was wrong. He is home now and on the mend, which is a miracle. During the ordeal, I was filled gratitude for time. Feeling awe over the gift of every hour we’ve spent together.
