This is actually one of my favourite armour pieces I’ve gone in the past few years. I don’t usually take on armour with a ton of filigree because it takes a lot of time but this one having a lot of flat tops helped. Filigree with peaks on a 3D surface is where it gets squirrelly.

But artists aren't their target, anyway. Their real beef is with people selling software that modifies their code (mods, etc) and thus threatens the integrity of their product, and factories pumping out bootlegs using their copyrighted images.

What we (and other fan artists) do are transformative works. They can nail artists for using copyrighted names in a listing obviously, or send a takedown request to an online marketplace, but policing transformative works is basically impossible, especially with copyright degrading at a rapid pace.

If an artist draws their own Alisaie, or a musician creates their own rendition of a FF14 track, or a fan event uses the FF14 logo in their branding, or my company sews an Alisaie costume or 3D models (from scratch) her sword and then prints it, we've used no official resources.

But the most important thing here is that they're straight up saying you can't use official resources. It's specifically a policy about taking a copyrighted jpg of say, Alisaie's concept art, and printing that on a t-shirt, or ripping a 3D model from the game and printing it, or whatnot.

Most companies have policies like this these days. It won't do much to stop fan-made goods, and there has never been much in the way of meaningful enforcement. Functionally these exist so that if there was a case that caused the company grievous harm, they'd have policy to point to.
