Too much regulation fundamentally (especially in the public sector in my experience) is tuned to "nothing bad must ever happen" and mostly that just makes it impossible to get anything done and frequently also doesn't prevent the bad thing happening anyway.

The Dirk Bogarde film 'libel' gave me nightmares until I was about 25

Great thanks this is now also my answer to that question doing the rounds about media that gave you nightmares

I really do think we need to try and figure out how to change the political incentives so that politics can get a bit more comfortable with making an argument you think is correct and maybe losing. I guess the answer is probably some form of PR.

Not being funny but how on earth do you write that without thinking "am I the one with a problem here?" Another one for @stephenkb.bsky.social 's 'Go Outside' party.

Some unintended consequences I suspect the rise of AI agents will create: 1. Restaurants that only take reservations by hand written letter, or more likely, don't take them at all. 2. Gigs where you can only buy tickets in person. 3. Businesses that operate without websites.

Or indeed that I and others who were more academically inclined also learned by getting 'stuck in and doing things'. It's patronising to literally everybody, somehow including himself.

‘This is playing into his hands’/‘this will allow him to play the martyr card’/‘this will help with his fundraising’ are all really bad takes. Criminals should be arrested and charged with crimes.

I really think we could be weeks away from one of these people saying they should be stripped of their citizenship if they come to power. It's the logical end point of all of this at this point.

On Suella not getting the implications for herself - I said earlier in the thread that I had expected people to resile from these views when it became clear the leopard would eat their face. I have been amazed by how much the response has instead been "the leopard is entirely correct to eat my face"

So I actually think the problem starts with the ethnicity thing itself rather than the 'slippage'. I think once you start trying to draw tight lines around it you end up inevitably in really stupid places.

Sure, I am a British mongrel with a load of Scottish and Welsh in there so I would always refer to myself as British. But importantly, I recognise that it fundamentally does not matter. It certainly is not any kind of basis for a "more muscular approach to citizenship."

Ah well of course for many in that camp I'm afraid the answer is you cannot be English, British, or anything other than a 'globalist'.

There is a big difference between drawing a distinction between English and British and saying you cannot be English if you are non-white

See I don't know. I feel like one of the weird things I underestimated about social media is that people start off adopting extravagant poses for clicks and you find after a while that they've convinced themselves it's actually true.

Again, I do realise that asking anyone to find coherence here is like asking you to mark my dog's maths homework but I find it so frustrating to think that these are the people a significant chunk of my fellow citizens are enamoured of.

I get that as far as it goes but she then says that ethnicity should be part of the criteria (for which I confess I am reading: all of the criteria) for citizenship and that multiculturalism is a failure, which I also interpret as meaning, in practice, a monocultural ethnostate is preferable?

If she's against 'multiculturalism' and considers herself to be not English and, presumably, someone who could never become English, does this mean she will be deporting herself as beyond the pale? If she's not English and multiculturalism is a failure on what basis is she opining on this at all?

dancariad.bsky.social @dancariad.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
If this is to be the basis of a more muscular approach to citizenship, should we now expect her to strip herself of her citizenship under a reform government? If not, what does that means?
210
dancariad.bsky.social @dancariad.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
I confess that I thought the obvious logical inconsistencies in this sort of position would lead to it being abandoned by its proponents eventually. I had no idea they would decide the way to rationalise it would be to declare that actually they themselves are not English.

Very tricky but I assume in this case we're talking climate impact primarily. Is the main point here that people assume that the two are closely related whereas in reality they are often in opposition, similar to single use plastic packaging which is very energy efficient but has other downsides?

I feel slightly differently about younger teenagers because the reality for me was that I simply wasn't allowed much freedom of movement and perhaps I would have traded being tracked for a bit more freedom. But university students is just mad.

My dad would occasionally send me a text insisting I called home to talk to my mum but beyond that they understood their role at that point in my life, having been very helicoptery at some earlier times. I honestly find this all very odd.

Well taxes going up is fiscal tightening, which is what you do during the upswing. My point is that with those various constraints, this might be as good as it gets for a bit. Might not be, but we're probably more likely to get a significant recession than a boom given *waves at everything*

It's all bound up with sclerotic growth isn't it? Keynesianism is supposed to be counter cyclical but it's very hard for people to comprehend that we might have been on the upswing for the last 5 years.

Surely as well this just completely plays into the old Tory attack line that Labour is obsessed with 'levelling down'? I just don't see how it works on any level, policy or political.
