A stripy lizard in profile, sitting on a rock that's jutting from a river back and surrounded by long kikuyu grass. The rock is a chocolate brown colour with bubbly voids typical of basalt, and lightly speckled on top with off-white moss. The vertical stripes on the lizard's abdomen and tail are of a similar width to the blades of grass, and they alternate between a colour like this rock, and the pale green-gold of the grass.

Four couch throw pillows. The fabric on each pillow has been printed with a photo of a Lithium Ion Polymer (LiPo) Battery. The pillows have a puffy filling, which makes them appear as though they are LiPo batteries that have inflated dangerously and could present a fire hazard.
Each pillow is different: black with silver grey text and logos for warnings and recycling, "Samsong" (the logotype and text resembles that of a Samsung battery), generic silver with a yellow stripe of Kapton polyamide film tape on one end, and another that's silver with an "initech" logo and other text and logos that relate to compliance and disposal.

A B&W photo of a person standing next to a stack of printed paper as high as the top of their head. This is Margaret Hamilton, at work as a Software Engineer and the leader of a team of extremely specialised programmers who worked for NASA. The photo was taken in 1969, and it shows a physical form if her work since she joined the Apollo project in 1965 (she joined at the age of 29 by my calculation). My interpretation of the expression on her face is a mix of pride and mild amusement. She has glasses, long, straight hair, and neat office attire. Margaret Hamilton has her hands placed gently on the stack of printouts to keep it all balanced upright. The pages appear to be arranged in bundles, ranging from 8-10 centimetres thick, to 20cm thick or more. The resulting stack of printouts is physically impressive for being an unusual feat, and it represents something even more impressive: it's the printed form of the source-code she and the team she led wrote for the NASA Apollo project. Their software ran on the Apollo Guidance Computer that was that on board each Apollo command module and Apollo Lunar Module. The Apollo Guidance Computer onboard the Eagle was an essential flight instrument for Neil Armstrong when he piloted the craft to land on the surface of the moon.

Today's affirmation message: Your hack doesn't have to look beautiful. It just has to work. That's what gives your hack true beauty.
A macro photo of an LED Strip stuck on to a piece of aluminium extrusion.

This LED strip is in horizontal orientation, and approximately 10mm high. It's been manufactured with a series of 5050 SMD LEDs (0.5 X 0.5 mm surface mount device light emitting diodes).
In the middle of this photo is a section of the LED Strip with a series of tiny copper pads, like on a printed circuit board. They're labelled "+12V", "G", "R", "B" to significantly what each pad is for: connection points for a "common anode" arrangement with positive 12 Volts power, and individual connection points for the ground for each of the RGB power rails for the LEDs.
In this installation, a large blob of solder has been applied to bridge together all of the RGB pads. In other words, applying power to any part of the circuit will deliver power to all of the LEDs equally. There's no need for complicated circuitry to mix colours if all you want in a hurry is white light.

Yeah, felt a few oscillations lateral shiftiness in that earthquake. Geoscience Australia reports the earthquake was magnitude 4.8, at a depth of 10km, and centred near Leongatha. #Earthquake #Australia #Victoria #Melbourne #Geoscience #GeoscienceAustralia

It's cropped to show just a map of southern and central Victoria and some of the sea off to the south. Melbourne is roughly in the middle of the map. There's also a large red dot to indicate the location of the earthquake. It appears the earthquake was centred near the town of Leongatha in Gippsland, 135 kilometres south-east of Melbourne.

A photo of the earth from space by NASA astronaut and Artemis II Commander Reid Wiseman. The bottom and left edges of the image are framed by the window frame of the Orion spacecraft. The Earth is eclipsing the sun, and the lower right arc of the edge of the planet is bright white where the sun's light is starting to emerge. Earth is fully visible against the background of space and stars. Because the Sun is obscured by the Earth, the camera isn't overwhelmed by the intensity of the sunlight, and so the camera can discern other relatively distant and dim stars. Similarly, although we're looking at the "dark side" of the Earth and it's in deep shadow from this angle, we can nevertheless observe an impressive level of details and colours. The oceans are an intense blue, the land a sandy brown, and the globe is wrapped with a delicate shell of swirling, white clouds. At the edge of the shell of the atmosphere and clouds, two auroras form pale green, slightly yellow arcs near the polar regions (top right and bottom left in this orientation). The disk of the Earth appears to be centred on the southern Atlantic Ocean. The left side of the disk shows the eastern coast of South America, the right side of the disk has the eastern coast of Africa and much of western Africa, and the top right region of the disk has the south western part of Europe, north Africa and part of the Mediterranean Sea.

The update to the Search bar widget on Android phones. As usual, there's the 'G' button on the left, and a buttons on the right to use the microphone or camera for verbal or photographic entry of a search term. The sparkly magnifying-glass button has been moved from the right side to being on third the way in from the right edge, where there's an awful chance you'll tap it accidentally when you mean to tap in the text entry field.Previous version of the Search Bar. On the left side of the field is the multicoloured 'G' Google logo. On the right side of the field are the usual buttons for microphone (to begin verbal entry for a search) and a camera (to begin visual entry for a search). A few pixels to the right of the bar, and encapsulated in the same border as the bar is a button with a sparkly magnifying glass icon. This new button is located where the other buttons used to be, and it's easy to press by accident with the base of your thumb while holding your phone and tapping anywhere else on the screen. A hardcover book, "Mileships" by Ian McQue. It's approximately 30cm wide, 25cm high, and 2cm thick, and resting on a coffee table. The front cover of the book is a digital painting of a science fiction setting: a sky-barge floating in front of puffy clouds in a caerulean blue sky over a jumbled, industrial city. The background is a forest setting, depicted with vertical lines in various shades of green.

The image is annotated with the addition of a bright red oval to highlight the first item in the menu, "AI Mode". This new malfeature appeared today or very recently, and it's been crammed into the UI in the first place in the menu. I think this a Deceptive Design Pattern: it's likely you'll click on it by accident because you're accustomed to using the first item in that menu due to years of experience training your "muscle memory". Previously, this menu had options for "All", "Images", "Shopping", "News", and so on, with a drop-down menu on the right side called "More" that contains additional options that are used less frequently.

Screenshot of a Google Search results page.
The search term is "Frankston North postcode".

Located above the search results so as to appear to be the most highly ranked search result is the "AI Overview".
It says: "The postcode for Frankston North, Victoria, is 3199.
You can verify this information on Australia Post's postcode checker."
This is an act of Deceptive Design by Google.

On the right side of the "AI Overview" is a rectangle highlighted blue that says "3199 Postcode - Australia Post", and has the Australia Post logo, and a link to the Australia Post website with information about postcode 3199.
This is also Deceptive Design: it gives the impression of verifying the LLM-generated fiction in the AI Summary, and it adds the weight of authority of Australia Post by appropriating their logo.

Underneath the "AI Overview" there's usually a "Show more" button, and in the screenshot we can see that this button has been clicked to reveal a line of small, grey text. It reads: "AI responses may include mistakes."

Underneath the "AI Overview" is the genuine list of ranked search results.
The top position in the search results is a link and summary of an Australia Post webpage. It states: "Your search for "Frankston North" returned 1 result(s). Please select an item from the list below to view details. Postcode, Suburb, Category. 3200"

The correct answer is indeed "3200".
Google's "AI Overview" is presenting fiction as fact.

Dear CVE Board Member,
We want to make you aware of an important potential issue with MITRE’s enduring support to CVE.
On Wednesday, April 16, 2025, the current contracting pathway for MITRE to develop, operate, and modernize CVE and several other related programs, such as CWE, will expire. The government continues to make considerable efforts to continue MITRE’s role in support of the program.
If a break in service were to occur, we anticipate multiple impacts to CVE, including deterioration of national vulnerability databases and advisories, tool vendors, incident response operations, and all manner of critical infrastructure.
MITRE continues to be committed to CVE as a global resource. We thank you as a
member of the CVE Board for your continued partnership.

Screenshot of a statement from Blackmagic Design. At the top is the company's logo and name.
The text says:

We wanted to post a quick note on USA prices and the new government tariff changes. Most products in the USA have increased and please check our web site for details. DaVinci Resolve and Blackmagic Cloud prices remain the same. It’s also worth noting that price increases only affect the US and prices in other countries are currently unchanged.

No, Chrome, I like those extensions because they unfuck my User Experience. Rather than unilaterally switching-off extensions such as ad-blockers, how about Google makes Chrome better, and stops being so aggressively awful to plugin developers and billions of […] [Original post on aus.social]

Heading at the top of the box:
"Updates"

Message in the box:
"These extensions were turned off because they're no longer supported.
Chrome recommends that you remove them. Learn more about supported extensions."

More context not shown in this screenshot: Under the message inside the box is a list of web browser plugins that I consider essential, but Chrome switched-off all those extensions without asking me.

Recently, there's been an increase in people talking about not seeing Facebook posts from friends, or folks noticing their own posts have been memory-holed by Zuckerberg's algorithmic shenanigans. I can verify some friends have made posts recently by looking at […] [Original post on aus.social]

Hope comes in many forms, but never before have I seen it slither. This headline from news.com.au is on a par with the Grauniad. 🤣

Received this email this morning. I didn't ask for it, and I don't want it, yet there it is. Feedback I hear from people who've tried it tends to fall into these groups: - "Wow, it's fantastic and speeds-up things so much for me!" - "I am experienced enough to […] [Original post on aus.social]

Recently, an Audio professional I have high regard for made an "open letter" style of criticism of practically all audio equipment manufacturers. Summary: devices that contain rechargeable batteries should be repairable, and it should be possible to replace […] [Original post on aus.social]
Screenshot of a comment written by Peter Freedman, founder and chairman of RØDE:

Our team is made up of over 800 passionate and proud audio and now video enthusiast who are just like you and your supporters. We all care greatly about what we design and manufacture and want everyone who invests in us to be completely satisfied.

I will make sure we provide a clear written policy that alerts all customers to the fact that we will support anyone who has bought our wireless units and can promise we will provide them with a clear path for replacement of batteries should they fail. I will also implement a design change to allow customers to replace batteries themselves on all future designs.

As you know we created the miniature 2.4 Ghz transmitter with inbuilt microphone category, and have now sold well over 3 million units. Since the initial launch we have had a relatively small percentage(fraction of 1%)fail over that time, and have made sure everyone who contacted us where fully supported.

When I started RØDE in 1989 I wanted to make sure that everything we made should last a life time, and our guarantee policy has and will continue to be very flexible even if a product is many years old. while there will always be the odd case where a customers needs are not met as I would like it, if I am given the opportunity to resolve that, I will.Logo of RØDE Microphones. The name is printed in black all-caps. The 'O' is replaced with a 'Ø' character in homage to the Scandinavian heritage of the founder's family. Under the text in the logo is a light brown circle.

Top of the list of cons in this camera review shows you how the sausage is made.
Screenshot of a camera review. It appears the writer accidentally left in notes from the template and the editor didn't notice, either.

Text reads:

Pros
- Form factor adaptable for different shooting situations.
- Excellent image quality.
- Support for all anamorphic de-squeeze ratios.
- Best in class menu system.

Cons
- Maximum of 4 product cons. As short as possible while still making sense.
- Only a single XLR port .
- Needs additional gear out of the box.
