Gotta say, was not expecting to come across a dragons fucking cars joke while reading #manga this morning Though I'm not particularly surprised that Dowman Sayman would be the first mangaka I see go for it
A two-page spread from the manga Dungeons That Surely Slaughter Adventurers by Dowman Sayman. It starts with a girl asking in surprise what "Grampy is doing" (Grampy is an old dragon). Grampy replies "It's no what it looks like!" Another girl rushes in, worried for the first one, and they're both shocked to see the dragon is in fact fucking a car. "Dragons really do have sex with cars... I've heard rumors about this", the second girl remarks in shock. On the second page, it continues "Word has it car-fucking is all the rage among dragons these days. I Hear they've used summoning spells to import hundreds of automobiles from the other world." Grampy apologizes in shame to the first girl that he "never wanted you to see me like this". We see the car (a kei truck) covered in an ominous white liquid.

Yeah, looks like it was updated to not be so messy. Though now it's messy in a somewhat different way with the dialogue overlapping the original sign. But well, that's about the best you can do when you're restricted to numpad positioning for sign translations. Worse than what CR could do in 2009!
Screenshot from Vertex Force anime episode 1, showing a line of dialogue on bottom (overlapping Japanese text for a messy look), with two lines of sign translation in the top center of the screen and another two on the right center of the screen. It's an improvement on what they had previously but still messy and a major downgrade to previous Crunchyroll typesetting quality.

Yes that is literally the joke. The manga is even more explicit about it
Screenshot from Even the Student Council Has Its Holes manga volume 1, showing two panels where the student council goes to tell the Light Music Club their budget is getting cut. The student council had apparently received a report that the club is using their club room to have lesbian sex (at this point the club members cuts the council out and runs)

These new OOONA subs are not as catastrophically bad as the fully Netflix-compatible subs Crunchyroll was serving to users a year ago, but they still represent a significant downgrade in especially typesetting quality. Numpad notation positioning only, with no colors used. Plus issues like this too.

Remember when Crunchyroll tried to make their subtitles significantly worse a year ago? They backtracked on it at the time, but I suspected they were just delaying their plans to shift from Aegisub to OOONA, and sadly, it seems I was right: Crunchyroll is actively pushing OOONA subs to users now.

LRT: Kurt Eichenwald actually blocked me at the time for posting this in response to his hentai tab screenshot making the rounds (Also, for all his claims about wanting to prove the existence of "tentacle hentai", curiously the hentai manga he had open had absolutely no tentacles in it whatsoever!)

Thank you Tapas for giving us yet another great example of why digital "purchases" that don't come with DRM-free downloads are no purchases at all, just rentals with an undefined time period :) I just loooove spending hundreds to thousands on a digital platform only to have you take it all away!

I also recorded my drawing sessions so I could make a timelapse for this, and thanks to that I can tell you this one took ~9.5 hours to complete. Making the (300x) timelapse was its own pain and the end result is super flickery... probably shouldn't have made it 60fps. Photosensitivity warning:

Here's also a little behind the scenes screenshot. I'm using Aseprite with mouse for this. I start by building the palette from a downscaled image, then use draw-through to get the big shapes and lines in place, then it's pixel work while zooming around in the full image to figure out the details.
Behind the scenes screenshot of working on the Shirao Eri image. The full-sized image is shown on the left in Paint.NET, with Aseprite on the right showing the finished pixelart in the middle and downscaled original art on the right, with blobs of color in the corner to show the palette. To give you a better idea of what I mean by "basic pixel wrangling skills", here's a mockup/redraw of the desktop of Factory 95 I did a while back. On the left is a screenshot of the actual game, on the right is my redraw. I did this because I wanted to see what it would look like "pixel perfect"
Screenshot of the game Factory 95, in which you use a Windows 95 -inspired fake OS to make slideshows. The game's emulation of the Windows 95 UI is sadly not very accurate and it uses mixed-resolution elements all over, which means the game doesn't really have a true "native" low resolution and it's very hard to make it look pleasing at any size.Pixel art redraw of the previous screenshot, with much more accurate Windows 95 UI look, combined with appropriately sized icons and text for everything. It has an authentic 640x360 native resolution, upscaled here to 1280x720.

ie. overpowered goofballs trying to live a normal life and failing to do so. The ending was nice and fitting for its vibes! I originally discovered this series through scanlations of its manga, and I might go back and read that one day because the art is really cute. Fits the series really well.

Doing some stuff and came up with this regex to determine if a word is likely to be romanized Japanese by checking if it fits a JP-like syllable structure: /^(?:(?:(?:([kstnhmrwgzdbpzjf])\1?|sh|ch|ts)?y?[aiueo])|n'?)+$/i It has false positives in EN (eg. "woman") but should work generally fine!
Screenshot of console output testing the regex in question with a bunch of English and Japanese media titles. "superman", "wonderwoman", and "breakingbad" return false, while "gen'eiwokakerutaiyou", "higurashinonakukoroni" and "sakurasounopettonakanojo" return true.

Looking at the footage of the Ocarina of Time remake and while it looks fine-ish in motion it has a very NINTENDO HIRE THIS MAN quality to it whenever you stop and have the opportunity to look at it more closely. Cloth texturing looks odd for the style, sword is weirdly greebled, it just feels off
Screenshot from Ocarina of Time remake equipment menu screen with Link standing in the middle in a green tunic and cap, with a sword in hand a shield on his back. The skin texturing is smooth, practically cartoony, while the tunic texturing is jarringly detailed in comparison. Link has a very cartoony face, which feels at odds with the relatively realistic hair and lighting. The sword Link is holding has a LOT of greebles all over it for some reason. The cap is also rather weirdly decorated. It just all feels off and at odds with each other.

Actually, let's be a real hater for a moment, to set a proper example: The author of this piece seems to fancy himself an intellectual word wrangler, yet he can't even spell "pseudo" right. And why would the pursuit of gamefeel be a "pseudoart" to begin with? What's supposed to be "fake" about it?
An excerpt from the article quoted in the opening post:

Self-playing games take microdecisions away from you in favour of macrodecisions. You don't need to choose where to aim your gun every second, but you will need to decide what ammo upgrade to select for the next level. This is an inviting approach for game designers (and not unique to the self-playing game). It allows designers to sidestep the difficult psuedoart of "gamefeel", and player skill becomes less of an issue to account for. You can focus on the metagame, the upgrades and abilities and perks and extras. The exofun. All you need to do is make the braintickling numbers work, and then make it look flashy.

But what if some genres are the microdecisions?

If somebody automated Devil Daggers, I would stab them in the hands with a barbeque fork. If somebody automated Tetris, I would have them arrested. When a designer of a racing game makes drifting round corners
1130
Daiz @daiz.moe · 21/08/2026
The article's "argument" in a nutshell: "Many games are both apples and oranges. Some are all oranges. I like oranges. These games are all apples, though. How could anyone like games that are all apples?" It's a fundamentally incurious take that downplays the strategic focus many of these games have

So what was number 1000? Well, it was Return of the Corpse King: Reining in my Cringe Secret Society, volume 1. Kind of a "we've got Eminence of Shadow at home" but from a different angle. It was okay. But it's also a good representation of what it takes to get to a 1000 books read...

For 3 I ended up adding manual noops in a functions.lor file for now but I imagine this could cause issues during actual engine integration. Could maybe add an abstract/extern keyword so you could write "extern function clear()" or so, then engine-side could even warn if all externs aren't provided

Also, more of a general Loreline issue, but the choice conditional parsing seems to break down when you add a second dot to it here (stops highlighting as a conditional once you get to "job.available.")
