We're witnessing the culminating rot of shareholder capitalism in real time. Some of the most powerful corporations in America have sided with an authoritarian regime in order to protect their short term profits — the fundamental rights of everyone else be damned. Remember this.

You

I say it so often
I worry the words
Will wear thin
From all the use
Instead
They only soften
Gently broken in
Made better with time
Like an old sweater
I can wrap around you
To keep you warm
Or wear myself
To revel in
The peace and comfort
Of how fiercely, loudly
Gently, sweetly
Enduringly, immediately
Like a promise
Like a battle cry
Like a signed confession
Like a lighthouse
You
It's you
Always you
I love I love I love

Meal Planning for the End of the World

I fill my tank with gas
Premium unleaded,
Two eighty nine a gallon
Because that's what's best for the engine.
A woman half a country away
Presses foot to gas pedal
As bullets fly in judgment
Sentenced to death for the crime of caring.

I make appointments with my doctor
For some persisting aches my body won't release
I'm recommended slow, gentle stretches
And a muscle relaxant that makes me sleepy.
A thousand miles away
In a city I've never been to
A man uses his body as a shield
Loses his body at the hands
Of killers playing games of war
In winter wonderlands

I answer emails in my Outlook
While my outlook spirals
Knowing streets away
They're on the lookout
For jackboot parades.

I pay the heating bill
It's higher this month
For all the chill in the air.
What's worse is all the extra ICE
And the neighbors I have never met
Who freeze in fear of being torn from
The lives they're just trying to live.

I smile at the grocery store checkout girl
While we exchange how are you todays
And both pretend we aren't just screaming
On the inside
At all the horrors raining down
Like this is a normal life
We're living
Like the world is simply turning
And not cracking under our feet.

I unpack my grocery bags
Blue canvas reusable, faded and frayed,
Put away the dry goods in the pantry
And plan my menu for the week
For a world on fire

Again. Late night gotta write. And yes, if you're wondering, this is about you. #poem #poetry #amwriting

Bloom and Glow

My heart is so full of you
I can't exactly call it my own
Anymore
Still, somehow I'm more myself
When I'm with you than I've ever been
Before we met
As if the pouring of your soul
Into mine
Did not dilute a molecule
Instead brought into clarity
And concentration
The better parts of me.
You, certain as the stars,
Warm as the sun,
Gentle and welcome in
Early spring
Called into bloom
All the seeds I'd forgotten
That I planted in my being.
I am that blossom
Shaking loose the soil
Petals unfurling to bask
In all your light.
It should be blinding,
But oh I see so much clearer
In the glow of you,
I am ever the sunflower
Tracking your path
Across the distant sky
Hoping I reflect some small spark
Of how bright you shine in me.
