The UN clarifying a definition point or revoking that definition has nothing to do with bringing peace. The obstacle to peace is Israel committing war crimes and genocide as a practical application of their racist political ideology.

"The Israeli military has raided Birzeit university again in the occupied West Bank.. it then demolished a memorial dedicated to Palestinian students killed by the Israeli military" Nida' Ibrahim explains this is part of a wider attack on the national Palestinian identity.

I know it's not the substantive point he makes, but centre-right? Come off it! Lib Dems are centre-right. Starmer's Labour to the right of them, Tories further right again, Reform even further and Restore even further than that. If you want to "reclaim the centre-right", you'd advocate for the EU.

Israel killed 235 Palestinian fishermen in Gaza, injured 143 others and abducted another 130 who were working. 1,810 fishing vessels were disabled, along with 270 of the 310 fishing stations along Gaza’s coastline. imemc.org/article/repo...

I see what you mean. I wish we had the data for Reform as well. However I'm still hopeful about this (my!) generation.

Our Approach to Zionism
JVP is guided by a vision of justice, equality and freedom for all people. We unequivocally oppose Zionism because it is counter to those ideals.

I'm assuming you went on Reddit or something to do your research, which is, of course, exactly where anyone would go to for a definition of Zionism. As opposed to, say, a dictionary. Maybe pop your head out of all echo chambers, and do some actual research.
000
Daf Smith @dafsmith.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Incredibly pompous of you to assume that because I disagree with you, I'm therefore in some form of echo chamber. If you can provide any currently practiced (so non-theoretical) definition of Zionism that doesn't involve violence or discrimination against Palestinians, then I'll concede.

Daf Smith @dafsmith.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
What something meant 100 years ago makes zero difference to what it means now. Words (and political ideologies) change meaning. Pearl clutching about past definitions of terms isn't even semantics. It's not relevant to today's world.

Daf Smith @dafsmith.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
The responses by some are essentially just "Not all Zionists". Really immature of them to believe the nuance isn't understood. Israel doesn't have to be a Zionist apartheid state. If it wasn't, this conversation wouldn't be happening.

Daf Smith @dafsmith.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Being anti-Zionist isn't racist any more than being anti-Reform is being anti-White. Zionism is a political movement, and people are allowed to condemn it and criticise it on its tenets and actions.

Millennials bucking the trend even more in the UK than US. And this from the FT of all places! Alt text for more analysis.
A graph showing the political movement of different generations as they age: the Silent generation (those born 1928-1945), Boomers (1946-1964), Gen X (1965- 1980), and Millennials (1981-1996, aka Gen Y).

In both the US and UK, the Silent, Boomer and Gen X generations, are shown to move towards more right-wing, conservative political support as they age.

However, in both countries, Millennials are moving in the opposite direction, starting (as all generations do) with progressive values when they reach voting age, but instead moving towards more left-wing, progressive political support as they age.

There are many theories for this clear departure from what was normal before: - a more interconnected world with greater choice about news sources,
- more frequent nexus events for political shifts such as 9/11, 7/7, Israel-Gaza, the Second Gulf War,
- the 2008 financial crisis, and ensuing austerity, increasing wealth disparity,
- loss of access to adequate housing, jobs, and basic necessities,
- the COVID-19 pandemic,
- vast improvements in the average educational standards and attainment compared with the previous generations,
- lately, the rise and threat of AI in the job market,
- the rise in normalisation and support for equal rights for previously discriminated against groups, such as women, non-whites, LGBTQ+ communities,
- the lies around the effects of capitalist "trickle-down economics" which has prevailed in both countries for nearly 50 years,
- disenchantment with establishment figures as their incompetence have become more openly known: Clinton's affairs, Bush Jr's war on terror, Blair's WMD's in Iraq, Cameron's harsh austerity on the poorest, Trump's myriad lies, Johnson's & Farage's failures and lies around Brexit, Starmer's countless broken manifesto promises and U-turns,

Is it any wonder that a better-educated, more informed, socially-aware generation with experience of many global crises before the age of 40, want the system to change dramatically?

People who become more conservative as they get older should be ashamed. If life experience hasn't made you more open to change, aware of diversity and supportive of those in need, you have failed at life.

... 6. So, Israel isn't a Jewish state, but a Zionist one. 7. Thus, Israel is the Zionist, racist, apartheid state we all know it is. 8. Zionists are not only outing themselves as racists, but their whole movement. Judaism is sacred religion and rightly protected. Zionism is a political choice.

Daf Smith @dafsmith.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
The irony of the logic is: 1. Greens party adopts "Zionism is racism". 2. Zionist apologists and sympathisers condemn it, and conflate Zionism with Israel. 3. Polanski is banned from Israel. 4. Many Jews are anti-Zionist. 5. Therefore, Zionism =/= Judaism. ...

This would be very interesting given the laws around discrimination against someone for membership of a political party (or trade union). On the one hand, proscription makes Green members terrorists, on the other hand, no-one can legally do anything about it. 😂

Personally, I think all countries would benefit hugely from a fully independent Scotland and Wales and a united Ireland. Then England would have to "subsidise" us as they like to say.

My wife has all Irish ancestry until 4 generations ago. She's incredibly proud to call herself part Yorkshire (mum's side) and part Black Country (dad's side). English, but with a nod to her obvious Irish roots. She looks just like for Aisling Bea fgs! Does she qualify for Suella?

100% Live and let live. It's far more fun being down my local (in England) watching England play Cumru at any sport. If I just cowed to what English nationalists and gatekeepers wanted, that spirit of competitive rivalry would just cease to exist, and we'd all be miserable and the same.

Does this mean the royal family isn't English? Or even British? I mean, I know it isn't, but that's what Braverman is suggesting to her so-called "patriotic" followers.

Daf Smith @dafsmith.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
Certainly don't need the "my nationality is better than your nationality" version of nationalism. I would say that tho, as I support Welsh independence, and I'm therefore a so-called "Welsh nationalist".
110
Daf Smith @dafsmith.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
Disagree. I was born in England. I am Welsh. I've never called myself English. I'd word it as "If you were born in England, you have the right to fully claim to be English, and anyone denying you that right, or claiming you are not English when you say you are, is a bigot."

Daf Smith @dafsmith.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
Seems strange that she's essentially supporting the same argument used by people who would tell her to go back to Mauritius. If she believed in her principles so much, that's exactly what she would/should do. Thankfully for her, the rest of the country doesn't agree with her.
010
Daf Smith @dafsmith.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
On Suella Braverman's national identity claims, if the logical conclusion of her argument is that she'd discriminate against your own direct ancestors and remove freedoms from them that they had at the time, she's nothing more than a blithering moron, and anything she says should state that caveat.
010
Daf Smith @dafsmith.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
Exactly. National identifiers and identity is personal choice afaic. In the end, we're all human, and deserve to have equal rights and equal respect, which is something no-one like Sue Ellen will ever agree to.

None of my direct ancestors alive in 1900 spoke English. All siaradwyr Cymraeg. But my parents and my generation were born in England. I'm a Cymro. I've never identified as English or said that I am, or even pretended to be. Quite happy being Welsh thanks.

Daf Smith @dafsmith.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
I'm second-generation born in England. Family is very much Welsh. None of my direct ancestors alive in 1900 even spoke English, and certainly not as a first language. Yet some very strange people try to deny my identity as a Cymro. How about each to their own identities, and live and let live? 🤷🏼
