72 hours of self-inflicted self-pity (food poisoning) have ended. Went for a walk and found myself a few feet away from one of the local herons. First time I’ve seen one on the towpath side of the canal.
A grey heron stands on the grassy edge of the towpath. A yellow eye looks warily towards the lens as I slow my pace so as not to spook it. The canal towpath in Hebden Bridge curves away to the left. There are barges moored on the left, and a row of three-storey terraced cottages on the opposite side. A grey heron stands on the edge of the towpath, overlooking the canal water.

I've just switched Radio 3 Unwind off due to more talking! Now, it's just this and birdsong. Still a strong contender for my AOTY.

It's thirsty work for ducks right now. It was hard to tell if the ducks I saw last night were standing or floating on the water.
A shot of the Rochdale canal. Towpath to the left. Drained canal cutting across from the bottom right. The water is just inches deep. It's not evaporated due to the heatwave alone, although the rest of the canal is visibly lower, with some moored barges at angles.

What a brilliant idea! The title of this track alone speaks volumes about a certain demographic: TERF Taxidermy And Cheese, by Effluvium. Which neatly covers alt-text duty, too.

I naively believed the weather forecast that it would be cooler outside so headed into Heb wearing long trousers and a thin cotton shirt. The sun behaved like an absolute bastard again, but I found a new shortcut on the way back. For a few minutes all was birdsong and yellow bliss.
A yellow field, bursting with buttercups. A cottage peeks out from behind shrubs and trees, and mashed potato clouds scud across the sky.

I wore my specs while picking wild garlic, for the first time. Glad I did or I'd have made these two homeless. The spider in the first shot was about 3mm in size, the other around 5mm.
A tiny spider waits for lunch, suspended above a forest of wild garlic leaves. A closer look reveals the super-fine strands of the web it's sitting in. Seen from below, it has yellow markings either side of its body and its legs are like zebra stripes. The photo shows a tiny spider in the middle of its web, woven between leaves of wild garlic. In the background, a few flowers can be seen. The spider has a black body, and its legs look red-brown. Its web is made visible by pollen that's got stuck to it.

*grumpygrumpgrump* Spent a blissful hour picking wild garlic yesterday, but tonight's feast has been waylaid due to a plug that broke in a power socket. Tried everything to remove it, but my hands are already fuming from all the DIY and cleaning I've done today.
Wild garlic cascades down through a hillside wood in West Yorkshire. A path can be seen to the right, winding its way through a tide of green leaves with white flowers dotted everywhere. In the distance, trees with fresh canopy are bathed in spring sun.

I don't think my hooves, knees and thumbs will ever forgive me for that hike/scramble/gravity-defying descent. My eyes, on the other hand... I took so many pics I managed to drain my phone's battery. Annoyingly, too many at the start of my walk, not at the end.
Late afternoon sun lights up ancient English rainforest clinging to a steep valley side near Todmorden. The trees are sprouting fresh green leaves, and the floor is carpeted with bluebells and littered with boulders and debris from recent strong winds. The photograph shows lush green hillsides characteristic of the Yorkshire Pennines. To the right, a drystone wall and a narrow path guide the eye through foreground greenery. A large Weeping Alaskan Cedar stands on the left side of the pic. In the far distance, Stoodley Pike monument is visible on top of the hill.

I just walked 6.5km into Heb and back, taking the steep lane that goes half way up to the moors. My heart rate didn’t exceed that of a zombie. I’ve not made my 150 minutes of exercise this week and I don’t know how especially with the amount of adderall in me. My heart rate:
A screenshot showing my heart rate according to my Garmin tracker. It’s 45bpm, with a resting heart rate of 58bpm.

I slept for just under 7.5 hours last night. That’s the longest sleep I’ve had in years. I suspect my 20 km hike around Hardcastle Crags (surprisingly quiet) may have helped.
Hebden Water flows through a rock-strewn riverbed at Hardcastle Crags. The trail follows to the left, and bare trees still await their first buds either side of the steep channel the water flows through. Not the best shot but I love the light. A sinking sun sets the trees ablaze with brilliant light, turning green sap and moss into almost brilliant yellows. To the right, a large boulder is perched ominously over me.A set of stone steps leads to a higher trail and deep blue skies that lie beyond.Hebden Water, seen at the entrance to Hardcastle Crags. Tree roots poke above the path and the river is full of large, moss covered boulders.

It looks idyllic. The feel was bracing.
The river Calder, from Brearley bridge. Sun and fluffy clouds. A hint of fresh young leaves on trees that curve off into the distance. Two geese meander in the middle. I was being buffeted by a keen westerly wind.

Had to run out to the local Sainsbury’s. It’s only 30 seconds away so I slipped on some walking trousers and a jacket over my PJs. Wondered why people kept staring at my t-shirt. Forgot I was wearing this one.

Somehow, I've managed to achieve 533 intensity minutes this week. Such is the need to release pressure from my job (and to stim, healthily). I suspect this morning's walk, followed by a 75-minute HIIT workout, may cause some aches tomorrow.
A screenshot from my Garmin app showing I've exceeded Government recommended exercise target by 355%! I've registered 533 intensity minutes over seven days (when my heart rate goes over 83bpm, which is the lowest warm-up rate). Not bad considering I work remotely, often under intense pressure, and have little time for personal interests.

This is the first moment I’ve had to put my feet up since 10am. Got up at 6am, spent 3 hours editing my CV and wrote a cover letter. Gave the flat a spring clean, then walked 15km along the canal to buy kefir. Fed the ducks and snapped the perfect metaphor for how my life’s going.

#SundayPixTrees The tree with an aura, Gandalf's Path and rickety stone steps curving around a tree that looks like it may topple.

Daybreak along the Rochdale canal, Mytholmroyd. #SundayPixBeginnings
The shot is looking through an old stone bridge that spans the Rochdale canal. The sun is rising on the other side of the bridge, and light is reflected off the water revealing the stones that curve around. There are stone paving slabs to the right, and in the middle are two geese, idly drifting along the canal, silhouetted against the rising sun.A shot looking over the Rochdale canal just moments before the sun is due to crest over the horizon. The colours are unreal: bright and dark yellows fade to orange that fades to a pink hue before giving way to darker blue skies. On the opposite side of the canal stands a small terrace of Victorian houses surrounded by bare trees silhouetted against the sky. The canal itself is just about frozen over, and there's a light dusting of snow on the ground.

Spotted this unusual looking duck by the canal as I walked into Heb the other day. Turns out it's a Muscovy duck, indigenous to Mexico and Central America. Happy to see it seems to have been accepted by the other ducks and now swims around with them. Apparently it doesn't quack but hisses.
The duck is sleeping with its head twisted round (a la Exorcist), so I was able to get close to it. Its feathers are amazing, in iridescent green and black colours, and it has red fleshy facial skin (caruncles).
