Say hi to Praearcturus gigas. This Devonian arthropod from Britain's identity had been in dispute for ages, but a new study reinterpreted it as a giant scorpion. Though the fossil is fragmentary, the estimated size is about 1 meter long. This is one bug you want to ride into battle. #Art #SciArt
A landscape image showing mostly water with patches of elevated land. A big scorpion sits idly, with pincers close to its face, near some rocks by the water. In the distant foreground are Prototaxites, towering trunk-like structures scattered on the elevated land patches.

Equipped with powerful jaws and finely serrated teeth, paleontologists say the 43-foot-long prehistoric marine reptile deserves the name Tylosaurus rex.

As an ichnologist, the first question I ask myself when encountering a potential modern or fossil trace is, "Is this a trace, or something that just looks like a trace?" This question becomes even more important whenever examining Ediacaran rocks from 540+ million years ago. 🧪🪨⚒️
