It felt unpolished in places, in a vaguely low-budget charming way. I know there are lots of other Paper-likes, but don't know how the stack up. Born of Bread/Escape From Ever After look slick but not sure if they have that spark. Paper Robot gets an honorable mention because it's my precious baby

Art, music, and writing has been consistently stellar across the series. I think I just have to accept that 64/TTYD-style battle systems are in the hands of indies now. Everyone go play Bug Fables.

I can accept that there are good things in the more recent Paper Marios. HOWEVER, PM64 and TTYD are absolutely amazing and I will never be normal about them, I love them so much

If I'd have had absolutely nothing to do I would've been tracking your progress all day in streetview, joining you in this grand adventure. Lucky for both of us, I had more than nothing to do today

Relevant text: "Of course, all of the hoopla is really for the Japanese version of the system, which is called the Nintendo 64. The North American NU 64 isn't scheduled to come out until this spring."

Here's a weird spread in Nintendo Power volume 79 (from December '95). It's interesting, the text seems to indicate that "Nintendo 64" was already going to be the Japanese system name. (Sorry for the low-quality picture!)
Pages 10 and 11 of Nintendo Power volume 79, showing early information about the then-upcoming N64.

The first Yooka Laylee felt like it did that completely by accident. The weirdly detailed level geometry offered so many barely-usable nooks to jump around on

September 26 1997, Bomberman 64 debuted as Baku Bomberman on the N64 in Japan! Developer/Publisher Hudson Soft made the tough decision to scrap over 6 months of work on the initial version of the game and start fresh after seeing other 3D games/Atomic Bomberman PC already at market!

Man, this one stands out to me as one of the most N64 games of all N64 games. Awesome music, bright worlds, wonderfully questionable tech required for 100%. I always felt like I had outsmarted the game whenever I got up on top of something.

Walrus manager talking to sad employee rabbit at a fast-food counter. "You're a good worker, very, uh, punctual. A bit wistful sometimes. That whole home-being-paved-over-to-build-a-mall thing, I know."

I think the only time I enjoyed one of these was skyward sword, where the dungeon WAS a 3x3 sliding puzzle

it's a single 3x3 sliding puzzle and it comes pre-solved to make it more approachable to people new to the genre

Before and after! At first I was just updating the plain rectangle hp bars for enemies, but then everything else looked so plain by comparison... so I ended up giving Paper Robot's battle UI a pretty big facelift, including some fresh hand-drawn digits for a new numeric font.
A pair of screenshots from Paper Robot. The UI elements are different. In the bottom, the elements are sharp, with heavy contrasting shadows and thicker numbers.

5-10 turns between curses (first rounds of each battle don't count), and 20% chance of double xp. So 4% chance of getting xp twice in a row. Boss fights are longer, so better chance for the curse to trigger. supermariofiles.wordpress.com/2023/04/07/m...

Chapter 5 still has a lot left to do, but it's already got the most lines of dialog for any chapter in the game (so far). Why did no one warn me that making an RPG would mean a LOT of writing?

After Posey got into the trash MULTIPLE times, we finally child-proofed it. She is desperate for the treasures within. We thought we were forgetting to close the door all the way, but no, she had figured out how to operate cabinets.

Kiddo is playing Minecraft on her own for once. She's watched me plenty and understands the basics of the game, but she's only just now learning WHY I'm always after better tools and big storage rooms and such. There's probably a life lesson or something there, I dunno

TOK is... okay. I think the combat COULD have been cool if there wasn't a "right" answer to each turn. TTYD's battle system was fun for me because you have a lot of room for planning ahead, hedging bets, managing resources. In TOK it's just solve-the-puzzle again and again. Music is great, though.

Spiral Mountain, from Banjo-Kazooie! BK and Tooie really pulled me in as a kid. The worlds were compact but felt big, they did exactly as much as they needed to. I even planned out my own worlds for a hypothetical 3rd game! Everybody did that, right?

The best part of every paper RPG is the one where you wander around the defunct department store looking for a ghost, classic. Wow, it's just like TTYD. I'm live right now making THIS VERY GAME, wow. www.twitch.tv/dobbsworks
