In a podcast interview with a church a couple of years ago the pastor asked me what Christians should do differently and I said they should stop proselytizing so this isn't a completely new thought. I just saw it differently, that's all.

Maybe in response they tell me about something that works for them. No coercion. Just people finding and building communities that they can fit into and that make sense to them. But also leaving room for other people to fit into things that make sense to them.

Neither of those things are in the text itself, the great commission is thought by many scholars to be an add in and hell came much later, it's read backwards into things that now seem clear and obvious but only because we've been told what that's what it means. Much like the rapture.

Mura begins his discussion of this by describing a teacher who tells his students that SWE is necessary and Black students be more successful if they do this, like MLK and Toni Morrison etc. He complained about the students saying he was racist, but he never asked why, or what he might be missing.

He was using ChatGPT to translate his paper into SWE. So his work, his research and then run it through a translator to ensure that the professor would be able to understand what he was saying. He was writing in English my friends. Not a foreign language, but it might as well be.

I mentioned this to a professor friend (not MFA) and she talked about a student from Ghana in one of her classes. She suspected that his papers were being done by ChatGPT so she brought him in to talk about it. Yes, he admitted that they were. But not how you might think.

I'm reading David S Mura's A Stranger's Journey and in his section about racialized students in predominantly white MFA programs he talks about Standard Western English being the common language of writing, as opposed to Standard Black English. It's an interesting discussion.

I think it's ok to feel inadequate at times, just like I think it's ok to feel guilty at times. It may be warranted. But these things should move us towards action or a better understanding of what we're doing (or not doing). Don't wallow in these feelings, let them radicalize you ;)

I'm pausing the reflections on traditional Ojibwe stories for a few months, like many of us I have a lot of traveling in the summer so I'll be writing more about what I'm reading or doing .. tho I'm sure references to these stories will persist. They are becoming part of me.

Reading collectively turns us all into storytellers as we take the story from our heads and move it into conversation which means that what and who we read matters. I don't mean fiction vs nonfiction, some of my greatest learning has come from fiction, from poetry that gives shape to feelings.
