There's also VP9 and AV1, which are more modern, royalty-free options that you can consider as well. And containers are not patented - you can still use MP4 as long as you're not using a proprietary codec. But MKV is indeed superior, and WEBM is also nice as it only supports royalty-free codecs.

Unfortunately being opensource does not exclude it from patent restrictions. It's actually the algorithms itself which are patented. So if Valve or Linux distros were to include H.264/5, they will need to pay royalties. As for AV1, it's actually royalty free, so yes, we should switch to it.

... And/or you could customise your Win+E shortcut key to launch Dopus directly. After that all your file operations would work as per normal. Only limitation would be that you won't be able to launch Linux apps from within Dopus.

...your system32 folder right? Anyways once you share your folders, there's a couple of things you can do to integrate. WinBoat can export .desktop files of your Windows app, which is basically a shortcut. You can then associate folders (mime type inode/directory) to that .desktop file....

d3Xt3r @d3xt3r.bsky.social · 30/04/2026
Well actually it can, sort of. Firstly you control which folders you want to make available to Windows, but you don't want to be sharing your entire root folder (not sure if that's even possible). But normally you wouldn't touch the folders in /, just like how you wouldn't normally mess with...

Btw there's a typo on the page: should be "Valve" not "Valvbe". *as Valvbe also noted that "Plain Sight" is also now playable.*

Bazzite Linux 44 has landed now that Fedora 44 has been released, and with it plenty of nice changes for gamers wanting a good Linux distribution.

It's ironic that you never learnt to talk to people yourself and you're advising others to do so. That "money" comment if yours was weird and uncalled for. I merely made a comment about how DISM was buggy, I don't know why that made you think about money. Weird.

d3Xt3r @d3xt3r.bsky.social · 30/04/2026
We can't fix it because we don't have access to DISM's source code. So we do what every other company does, log a ticket to Microsoft and pray that it gets fixed sometime in the future. Sucks that you don't know how MSPs operate. I didn't know they made embarrassing tech pros like you any more.

Not sure what you mean by the latter part of the comment, but the fact is, it's broken for us, which means there's a bug, a bug which wasn't present in earlier versions of Windows.

d3Xt3r @d3xt3r.bsky.social · 30/04/2026
Win11 actually broke DISM for us (an MSP). Happened somewhere mid/late last year, none of our DISM repairs work on any workstation, even if we manually specify the source WIM.

Virtual Machines are the way to go. Check out WinBoat, it automates the whole thing for you and even integrates your Windows apps in Linux, so it feels like a native app. And some Linux distros like CachyOS even provide a one-click installer for WinBoat. winboat.app

Microsoft losing the plot to the extent that games running on Linux through a compatibility layer are now not only faster but *assumed to be faster* than games running natively on Windows should be an even bigger story than it already is
For gaming, Microsoft views steamOS as the benchmark, and is working to optimize the platform so that steamOS and Windows gaming performance are comparable. Within the next year or two, it believes that Windows will be able to truly compete head-to-head with steamOS in gaming performance on identical hardware due to foundational changes that are being made to the platform in the coming months.

It's awesome seeing a remastered BioMenace remastered at last, and just in time for the holidays too! Game looks amazing, easily my favorite remaster of the year - and this year has seen some big remasters! Huge thanks to you and @lethalguitar.bsky.social for doing this!

Also in the same vein: fuck @frame.work At the you can still buy Steam Deck thru local retaillers (even if it's expensive), but with the Framework, you've got zero options as they prohibit commercial resale and also actively block parcel forwarders for no reason.

Even if you disable Snap, there's a good chance it may break during a dist-upgrade. See: ounapuu.ee/posts/2025/02/05/done-wi…

It might work fine initially, but it will eventually break during regular usage/updates (generally due to Snap, or due to other Canonical shenanigans).

KDE is not only more familiar and easy to use for newbies (familiar Windows-like UI), it's also a lot more customisable, powerful (doesn't require a bunch of extensions to make it usable), and has much better support for Wayland.

So as a result, it's not available for ~90% of the world's population, so I wouldn't suggest it as a general recommendation for a global audience. > I use Project Bluefin which I’ve found to be fantastic Why Bluefin (Gnome) and not Aurora (KDE)?

From there I slowly moved on to customising my AUTOEXEC.BAT with a menu so I can directly launch my favorite games, eventually digging deep into CONFIG.SYS tweaks for tricky games like BIOMENACE and making my own null modem cable for multiplayer OMF2097... Man those days were fun.

I would love to hear more about your experiences of your "good ol days". For instance, my earliest memories learning computers was on my cousin's 286, accidentally ended up learning DOS because I wanted to play Dangerous Dave and Prince of Persia when he wasn't around.

(to clarify, I meant videos that's not just a few seconds or couple of minutes. I know there are AI videos out there, but I wasn't aware people were making entire full-length videos on YouTube as "content" for others to consume.)

If you really want shared storage between the two OSes, use exFAT. But don't use it for games or important data, because exFAT isn't very reliable unfortunately.

FYI, WinBtrfs hasn't had a new release in 1.5 yrs, & there are several unaddressed issues such as freezing and data loss. I'd recommend accessing your Windows data from Linux instead (and keep all your Linux-compatible games on BTRFS, and your Windows-only games on NTFS).

Unfortunately, this app is useless: it doesn't support UEFI, which is used by most PCs. You can enable CSM, but the average user (the target audience) doesn't know what it is and won't do it. Furthermore, many distros no longer support BIOS (e.g., Fedora).

No importa, ya que ningún "desarrollo" puede evitar el Arranque Seguro, que está habilitado por defecto en la mayoría de las PC con UEFI. Así que este proyecto es una completa pérdida de tiempo.

Forget the Deck 2 and the Z2E, IDK about *any* current or upcoming handhelds because they're all still on RDNA3/3.5, which means no FSR4. For those who have experienced FSR4 - it's a massive game changer, so really, all these Z2E and Strix Halo devices are DoA for me.
