Derrick Everett @d3rrick.bsky.social · 3hNow that I get suspended from Bluesky several times each month -- for which no reason has been given -- I am returning to other social media that I have neglected recently, including Twitter. It's a shame that Bluesky has become such a cesspit that even Twitter looks good in comparison. 121
Derrick Everett @d3rrick.bsky.social · 11/10/2026Those nice people at Bluesky locked me out of this account again, this time for two weeks. I have absolutely no idea why they did this. Each time there is a message saying that an email will give me the reason for the suspension. But this is a lie, because I never received any email at any time. 130
Derrick Everett @d3rrick.bsky.social · 21/09/2026I just went to the bins at the other side of the house with a bag full of paper, old textbooks and cardboard, to find that the bin collection happened today. It's been Tuesday for most bins for as long as I can remember. I am completely disoriented. In other news, I am turning into Mr. Meldrew. 100
Derrick Everett @d3rrick.bsky.social · 19/09/2026Computers constantly give you new problems to solve. I had moved my backup jobs to tailnet, keeping it all private and away from the riff-raff on the public internet. The setup worked fine for a week, and then today one backup failed. It took me a few hours to identify the cause as a stuck daemon. 🙃 110
Derrick Everett @d3rrick.bsky.social · 19/09/2026It will soon be time for the annual sorting of the sweaters (pullovers). After I moved to darkest Scandinavia, all my friends and relatives gave me sweaters as Christmas presents, so now my closet is full of them. That's not counting the ones that I have bought to fill the gaps in my collection. 😉 150
Derrick Everett @d3rrick.bsky.social · 17/09/2026UPS arrived with a package for me, sent from those good people at Yubico in Stockholm Two more YubiKeys. So in addition to the old ones with obsolete firmware, now I have 4 keys (2 USB-A and 2 USB-C) with the very latest firmware (version 5.8). To be registered in Dropbox, AWS, Microsoft, Google ... 000
Derrick Everett @d3rrick.bsky.social · 17/09/2026Here in Scandinavia, the hardware store chain Clas Ohlson is a big toyshop for men. Today they opened a new shop just down the road from me, and in the opening day sale everything was 30% reduced. I was restrained. New electric shaver, tools, much duct tape. 110
Derrick Everett @d3rrick.bsky.social · 17/09/2026I don't know anything about AI but if you want to experience Artificial Stupidity, try Amazon support. I just wasted half an hour with their idiot chatbot. The issue is that I cannot add my mobile phone number to my Amazon (shop) account because they way it is associated with another account. 😠 120
Derrick Everett @d3rrick.bsky.social · 16/09/2026For the IT crowd, this week I have been exploring tailscale. Now I have 5 computers on tailnet, four physical boxes and one EC2 instance. The EC2 instance now has three roles: the backup server for the other boxes; the rsyslog server for the other boxes; and today it became a Control D endpoint. 110
Derrick Everett @d3rrick.bsky.social · 15/09/2026Waiting for a delivery by FedEx. Usually they ring me before delivering but nothing yet. The estimate was today before 18:00 and it is now 17:22 local time. Get your skates on, mate. 100
Derrick Everett @d3rrick.bsky.social · 14/09/2026My Windows PC rebuild project is on hold again. I bought components for a rebuild of Loki (which has had more rebuilds than Trigger's broom), which has been my Windows 10 PC (and before that Windows 8.0 and 8.1). So this is old hardware. The final straw was when the water-cooling for the CPU failed. 210
Derrick Everett @d3rrick.bsky.social · 14/09/2026More about USB cables: passive USB-A to USBA-A cables are dangerous and you should not use them. Although USB-A male to USB-A female has one good use case, which is to get a dongle away from the electrical noise of your USB 3.x ports. But that is a rare exception. www.howtogeek.com/most-dangero...howtogeek.comThis is the most dangerous USB cable you can buy—here's why I keep one in my toolkit anywayWhy I keep a USB-A to USB-A cable despite knowing it can fry your gear. 110

Derrick Everett @d3rrick.bsky.social · 12/09/2026More than a few years ago, I did the guided tour of Sveriges Riksdag, the Swedish Parliament. The tour guide cited a caption printed in the #Economist under a photograph of the grey tapestry that hangs in the chamber: "This tapestry has 256 shades of grey. Very much like the Riksdag." 😂 000
Derrick Everett @d3rrick.bsky.social · 12/09/2026Taking a break from doing laundry to watch #LNOP on 3Sat. In my younger days, while living in London I attended many Proms concerts. I usually bought either a full season ticket for the arena or a half-season, depending on my summer plans. Any of those 3 tickets would get you into the Last Night. 🙂 120

Derrick Everett @d3rrick.bsky.social · 10/09/2026I have been thinking about the kids whose parents never came home from work on 9/11. The terrorist sympathisers on this social media site make me feel physically sick. You assholes are just as guilty as the Saudis and Yemenis who flew those planes. You all have blood on your hands. Much blood. 000

Derrick Everett @d3rrick.bsky.social · 08/09/2026I'm just outside the city boundary of Oslo. Down in the city, they are starting a total lockdown. The police are literally transporting busloads of royalty and VIP's downtown from the airport (Gardermoen) and the road is closed to normal traffic. Guests for King Harald's funeral tomorrow. 130
Derrick Everett @d3rrick.bsky.social · 08/09/2026My printer will not network any more (we're all getting older) and so I have been connecting computers to it by USB-B cables of various lengths. While crawling around under the desk plugging cables, I managed to switch off a UPS (there are two of them down there). Two of my PC's had to be rebooted. 310
Derrick Everett @d3rrick.bsky.social · 07/09/2026I'm happy with my favourite Logitech wireless keyboards (MX Mechanical, MK270 and MX Keys S), not least for their responsiveness, but sometimes I lose the wireless connection on a reboot. So I need at least one wired keyboard. I have two: an ancient Logitech with a PS2 connector and a compact one. 131
Derrick Everett @d3rrick.bsky.social · 06/09/2026I am expecting delivery of new YubiKeys tomorrow. The old ones have old firmware (but still work on dropbox) and AWS just doesn'ẗ want to use them, so I need keys with newer firmware. These are v5 NFC with USB-A but now that I am migrating everything USB to USB-C, I shall soon need keys with USB-C. 100
Derrick Everett @d3rrick.bsky.social · 02/09/2026I have heard many lacklustre performances of the Enigma Variations, so this punchy and crisp interpretation of them by Kirill Petrenko and the BPO is refreshing. 130
Derrick Everett @d3rrick.bsky.social · 01/09/2026I've been watching the swearing in of King Haakon VIII. Norway doesn't do coronations any more, because the politicians don't like that kind of monarchist stuff. So instead, there is a swearing in ceremony for the new king. In the main chamber of the Storting. 121
Derrick Everett @d3rrick.bsky.social · 01/09/2026Today I won a fight with DHL. 2 weeks ago, their driver turned up on my doorstep 10 minutes after I went out. He rang me and I said that I was on a bus but I would be back in 2 hours. So he sent email saying that I would be informed when the package could be collected. That was a big lie. 100

Derrick Everett @d3rrick.bsky.social · 30/08/2026The amazing soprano Iréne Theorin, here as Brünni. I first heard her live in Copenhagen, gosh, about 35 years ago in that restaging of Wieland Wagner's version of Holländer. Later as Brünni in the Copenhagen Ring ... 161
Derrick Everett @d3rrick.bsky.social · 29/08/2026I watched the short (5-minute) broadcast of a speech by King Haakon VIII on NRK this evening.. He made it clear that his priorities were democracy, tolerance, inclusivity and listening to his people. I'm not a monarchist but I think that Haakon is a good guy. 120
Derrick Everett @d3rrick.bsky.social · 29/08/2026Listening to tonight's Prom concert with the Oslo Philharmonic; regular contributors to the festival since their first visit 40 years ago. The concert began with an orchestral version of the Norwegian national anthem (the original was written by Richard Nordraak) and a respectful 2-minute silence. 280
Derrick Everett @d3rrick.bsky.social · 24/08/2026After so much frustration with UPS recently, it was a pleasure to receive a parcel delivery today from Posten/Bring. The driver texted me 30 minutes before delivery time and arrived at the expected time. It could not be better. 000
Derrick Everett @d3rrick.bsky.social · 21/08/2026My radio highlight this evening is the first symphony concert of the season from Kirill Petrenko and the Berlin Phil, which is being broadcast live on Bavarian Radio BR-Klassik. Elgar and Tchaikovsky. It doesn't get any better than Petrenko with the music of Tchaikovsky. 020
Derrick Everett @d3rrick.bsky.social · 18/08/2026For many years I've used and recommended computer peripherals from Logitech. I'm disappointed to find that there is no longer support for their Unified Adapter. This was a brilliant product that could be used with up to 6 devices, such as mice and keyboards. It reduced the need for many USB dongles. 100
Derrick Everett @d3rrick.bsky.social · 18/08/2026I was very impressed with today's DHL delivery. The driver arrived on the estimated delivery day, before noon!, found my house and rang my doorbell. Some other couriers cannot find the house, or they cannot find my doorbell. Exemplary. Those clowns at UPS 🤬 and FedEx 😡 could learn a lot from DHL. 020
Derrick Everett @d3rrick.bsky.social · 04/08/2026Today I had one of my occasional fights with Amazon. Spoke with three different support agents. Finally got a supervisor to make a clear statement: after two more days, if the goods are not delivered, then the order will be cancelled automatically. For Amazon that is a "resolution" of the issue. 🤬 101
Derrick Everett @d3rrick.bsky.social · 03/08/2026It looks like another day wasted, waiting for FedEx. On Friday they promised delivery by 6PM. Nothing arrived. Yesterday it was delivery by 6PM on Monday. Nothing has arrived. In other news, UPS sent me another email saying that they cannot deliver because they do not have an address. Bullshit. 110
Derrick Everett @d3rrick.bsky.social · 26/07/2026The production of #Rienzi that premiered today is refreshingly free from cuts. Yes it is a long opera: and if they cannot make a better ballet then it might be best to drop that bit. One surprise: Rienzi's prayer is moved from the start of act 5 to the start of act 4. #BayreutherFestspiele2026 170
Derrick Everett @d3rrick.bsky.social · 15/07/2026Microsoft's support for Windows 10 is as I had expected. First they said that users could get one year of security updates but they had to pay (in cash or reward points). Protests from all quarters. So Microsoft said we could get one year for free. Now they say we can get another year for free. 😂 000
