Public Statement on the Settlement Between the Department of Justice and
UPMC Regarding Gender-Affirming Care
The Pittsburgh Commission on Human Relations condemns the settlement between the
U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC).

While the continued anonymity and privacy of the children and families who have utilized gender-affirming services at UPMC facilities is paramount, a ten-year moratorium on gender-affirming care services for those age 19 and younger is a devastating blow to the community.
Pittsburghers should not have to leave their hometown medical hub to seek care.

Inequities in health care are already a guarantee for vulnerable populations; utilizing identity to restrict access to clinical intervention is not only discriminatory, but life-threatening. Statistics on the impact to youth in the LGBTQIA+ community are readily available and clearly show the risk of removing access to these services. If the safety of children was truly at the heart of this matter, giving families the right to choose what care is right for them would be at the forefront.

It is a violation of Pittsburgh's City Code to, "Refuse, withhold from, or deny to any person elective medical care which would normally be provided to a person, but for that person's real or perceived gender identity or gender expression." If you feel your rights have been violated, we urge you to contact our office.

That quote about evil being unable to create anything new feels particularly relevant to the way these models remix existing human art. It really makes you wonder if we're trading our creative soul for a shortcut.

I started at 47. The WPATH SoC did not recognize me as trans until 2012. Still took me another decade to acknowledge that transition was something that I could do.

I’m always reminded of this chart. It doesn’t show that there was a rise in left-handed people between 1900 and 1950, it shows that once society stopped stigmatizing being left-handed, we began to see the true numbers. Lefties have always been nearly 12% of the population, they just hid it before.

A chart of “the history of left-handedness” giving the rate of left-handedness among Americans by year of birth. It tracks a percentage of the population who are left-handed: starting around 5% in 1890, dropping to about 3% by 1910, and then slowly rising to just under 12% by 1950 where it plateaus until the graph ends in 2000.
The data source given is survey data reported in "The History and Geography of Human Handedness" from 2009.

A little while ago EJAE played a demo for What It Sounds Like during an interview. There's a portion that was cut during the edit that really hits home sometimes and I really wish they'd left it in. It makes some of lines they kept in the song make more sense.

There are too many people willing to pull that lever. Conservatives actively trying to eliminate trans people from society, centrists thinking that agreeing with them to get more power, and everyone else who just doesn’t care. We need more people willing to keep that lever from being pulled.

Mississippi’s state law putting the onus of age verification on all websites has now effectively banned @bsky.app in that state. I can only hope that maybe @aclu.org can start fighting this before these issues start being federal instead of just states.

I finally figured out what the fever dream was that I stumbled upon one time I was home sick. I was literally feverish and half asleep, drifting in and out while an old black and white movie was on the TV. It was terrifying. It seems to have been a marathon of the Quatermass films.
