Saddened to learn of the end of the Bulwer-Lytton Bad #Fiction contest. (Fediverse to the rescue?) Here are some of my favourites: > For the first month of Ricardo and Felicity’s affair, they greeted one another at every stolen rendezvous with a kiss – a lengthy, ravenous kiss, Ricardo lapping […]

Going through a phase of general self-disillusionment, so as consolation the past couple of weeks I’ve fallen back on my old vice, video games. In this case, Detroit: Become Human. So good 😭 Can confirm this patch makes it playable on Mac/Crossover: github.com/DiAvisoo/MoltenVK-Detroit […]

Possibly in Michigan (1983): www.youtube.com/watch?v=iLJNSD3H5sg According to the YouTube algorithm, the shortest path from Kenneth Anger to Jack Stauber goes through this short film.

"The American keeps saying: 'Don't do that... Please, don't do that!' But only his mouth speaks these words, while his senses have long since given over to the magical arts of the wicked devil of love. But then, after all his protests have proven feckless, something surges within him. And just […]

Back home today from the 2026 German #ChapmanStick seminar. This trip was one of the most life-affirming things I’ve done in a while! Met my teacher and other players in person for the first time. Feels a bit less lonely to know other kindred spirits who have […] [Original post on hachyderm.io]

I was once asked what instrument would be a good one for a beginner to expedite learning #MusicTheory. How would you answer that question? At first glance, a simple answer would be “any”. Music theory is basically applied group theory, and you will be able to exercise some aspect of it on […]

I predict that one day, the recently productive "-gate" suffix will detach and become a noun "gate" that just means "scandal". Scratch that, it pretty much already happened: en.wiktionary.org/wiki/-gate

The "C" example has clearly been plagiarizing the #conlang I have inside my head and have never written about publicly before. Apparently from the paper: sites.socsci.uci.edu/~rfutrell/pape…

Four labeled diagrams of a cat next to a dog, with different bounding boxes around them, and a string of text exemplifying that particular way of dividing the scene.
a. Natural language, "a cat with a dog": blue box around cat, and red box around dog.
b. Unnatural systematic, "a gol with a nar": blue box around heads of cat and dog ("gol"), red box around bodies of cat and dog ("nar").
c. Non-local systematic, "waitacdahogt": blue box around cat, and red box around dog. "Waitacdahogt" contains "a cat", "with", "a dog" as subsequences.
d. Holistic, "Vek": green box around both cat and dog.

On the 12th day of #MusicTheory-xmas, the ghost of Barry Harris gave to me: - 12x 7th, 6th (= m7), m6 (= ø) chords - 6x 7b5 chords ("rectangles") - 4x augmented triads ("triangles") - 3x diminished 7th chords ("squares") - 2x whole tone scales ("hexagons") - 1x chromatic scale ("dodecagon") […]

A kinda wild perspective I heard recently, that also low-key makes a lot of sense: aging is a type of gender transition. Subdividing the category of “women,” we have“girl child“, “fertile young woman”, “mother”, “crone” which are assigned fairly different values and roles in conventional social […]

My colour-coded version of the Harmonic Wheel (harmonicwheel.com); basically a Tonnetz visualized as an unrolled torus, or a bunch of circles-of-fifths stitched together. Now with the same information overload as my other diagrams. Try mapping the […] [Original post on hachyderm.io]
