Rising plant extinction rates on European mountain summits
Climate change increases plant species richness in alpine ecosystems. However, to what extent this diversity enrichment masks extinction dynamics of resident species remains elusive. In this study, we...

If nature underpins the economy, why do biodiversity-rich countries in the Global South have such high poverty levels? Because their natural wealth has historically attracted colonisers, and “colonisation drove colonised countries towards natural resource exportation with weakened governance” !!!

New publication in Environmental Research Letters: overshooting 1.5°C then cooling back down does not undo the damage. We map where, for whom, and through what mechanisms temporary overshoot becomes permanent loss. Paper (OA): iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1... 1/12
"Three stacked panels sharing a time axis. Top: global temperature rises past 1.5°C, peaks, then declines (the overshoot pathway), with a flat permanent-exceedance line at the peak for comparison. Middle: biophysical responses to the same trajectory diverge; some track temperature down, some recover with a lag, one keeps intensifying. Bottom: socioeconomic impacts of the same biophysical change diverge by adaptive capacity; high-capacity systems recover, while one crosses a dashed adaptive-capacity threshold and never recovers: the permanent overshoot legacy.

🐠📣 New paper alert! 🦀 📣 Cryptofauna doesn't react uniformly to nutrients: cryptobenthic fishes are better able to capitalize on extra nutrients near seabird colonies, likely boosting larger piscivores; when rats are present, inverts thrive instead ▶️ doi.org/10.1002/ecy....

Almost every European plant species is out of equilibrium. Climate change is only part of the story—disturbance greatly shapes where species actually occur. 🚨Our new paper 🌱in @natecoevo.nature.com analysed 3,047 species across >1.1M European vegetation plots. www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Known #extinctions are just the tip of the iceberg. Many human-driven losses remain undocumented—so-called #DarkExtinctions, absent from the IUCN #RedList, biasing our view of biodiversity loss. Check our new paper in Nature Reviews Biodiversity: www.nature.com/articles/s44... 🌐🌍🧪
