Look, there are plenty of skaters who didn’t have money and were from the wrong side of the tracks. Who misbehaved. Tonya committed an actual crime, and she was known for being pretty shitty to people. She got given plenty of chances.

She won a silver at Worlds! She threw it all away because she stopped training and stopped landing the triple axel, which she only did twice at major competitions, both in 1991. If she’d continued skating the way she did at 1991 Nationals she would have been a legend, instead of an odd footnote.

It was one of the worst men’s events in history because there were many complete meltdowns, not just Ilia. Adam and Yuma were heartbreaking. Misha is the only one who skated well in both the short and long. We’re all happy for him, but the rest of it was excruciating to watch. That’s never fun.

Not only that, they made errors and didn’t deserve to win! If they had skated perfectly I could have lived with that result. But it was honestly wrong. Then there’s all the reasons are FB/C are vile people and yes, the message sent. It’s more than just the usual judging politics.

However, Ilia absolutely is pushing the sport technically. It’s actually the quads that are the difficult physics defying tricks here — backflips don’t even get technical points. Ilia’s quad axel was unheard of before he did it and hopefully we’ll see it in the individual event.

Lol she’s not the first publicly out skater in history, not by a long shot. She is, however, the first publicly out woman to compete in elite figure skating, period. That’s a big deal in a sport that rigidly enforces gender norms for women.

I’m really hoping for Chock/Bates. They’re the only ones who have a real shot. I despise Cizeron but unfortunately the judges love him and their free dance is good. Their RD is not that great and hopefully they get judged accurately on it. The French aren’t lovers. He’s gay and she’s still married.

Extremely unlikely. They’d have to get past Piper and Paul and Chock and Bates as well as the French, who just beat them by a huge margin. It’s surprising they beat Fear/Gibson, although not unwelcome. They are technically better but their awful RD is holding them back.

Unfortunate about Nina — it looks like she’s not all the way back after her injury. Lara finished 4th in both segments but others were less consistent and added together her scores put her in 3rd. That’s how sport works.

2024 was 80s. Last year was 50s,60s, and 70s. A bit nonspecific, but some teams still produced good RDs. :)

Yes, but there are two programs, and they add them together. Italy has pretty specific selection criteria, they go by the numbers. Lara is already selected, you don’t dump someone because they had one so-so free.
