i cut my teeth as a coder writing perl, a language with a notoriously toxic community which i ended up witnessing from the inside for years, and which infamously shot itself in the foot when trying to design a future for it. here's a great essay about all of that www.beatworm.co.uk/blog/compute...

I liked this review a lot. Probably I didn't understand most of the subtexts as I'm not american but this analysis makes the movie way more clever than i thought seeing (and enjoying) it.

Thinking about this while watching For All Mankind s5 (five) finale. The series went from "accurately described lunar landing" to "space war using modified LEM" and most of the characters are now unbearable, but it's still written with so much respect for the audience it's still good to watch.

How did I not know until today that Vincent made not one, but two Dr. Goldfoot movies? Dr. Goldfoot and the Bikini Machine and Dr. Goldfoot and the Girl Bombs are spy parodies with sort of beach party movie aesthetics. also, Mario Bava directed the sequel.

It’s absolutely incredible that one of the largest Japanese-run Go servers, which has been running since 1992, is still accessed entirely via Telnet. And while most players use GUI clients that use Telnet under the hood, you can still connect manually and get ASCII graphics streamed to you

I like that witches' magic is also a physical thing: it makes you feel sick, it makes you feel good, it makes you feel horny :-) and being a good witch is also about learning how to dominate the feelings that constantly flow through your body. #Febchantment

Difficult to say. The four grannies are very powerful as they are ancient witches but the Vampire's Bride stood up against them nearly killing one... I don't know if she's the strongest, but surely the most fearsome. The power of the Black Queen is great but never showed in the book. #Febchantment

Nearly nothing. She doesn't mind about it and the history of the witches is not written in any book. Witches are all a little paranoid about informations about themselves and they rarely speak about the past. #Febchantment

Four old witches took care of Argenta while she was recovering from the amnesia that wiped her memory. They taught her all about magic on the isolated island where they live. She has such a deep bound with them that she call them "grannies" #Febchantment

Simone Faré @cymon.bsky.social · 23/02/2026

Argenta is a witch and obviuosly a magical wielder. Orlando, her companion, is just a thug (a very nice one :-) ) with no magical powers (in my world that's called "beltanno"). In every story there is always at least one other witch that uses magic, but no other characters, usually. #Febchantment

Simone Faré @cymon.bsky.social · 22/02/2026

Magic is the main engine of the plot as characters need to control it taking care of the witches that are magical users. At the same time magic is important for its absence. In the story there's also a truecrime podcast subplot where magic is (probably) intentionally ignored. #Febchantment

The girl seemed to brush it aside as if it weren't urgent, but instead she forced a smile that was far too broad, clapping her hands. "Let me see it again."
"What?"
"The trick, the thing with the T-shirt!"
"It's not a trick, it's a..."
Another clap. "I understand, but let me see it again."
This time Argenta raised a finger to the ceiling. She had no idea where her hair clip had gone, but she was starting to need it. As she drew little circles in the air, the little plastic heart crawled out from between the sheets, reached the pillow, and then leaped, landing in her hand. She immediately started to put her hair in a ponytail, while Carolina burst out laughing.

Witches are constantly affected by magic in everyday life. Magic makes them sensitive to moon cycle, getting sick or excited or more at newmoon and under particular astrology configurations. They are also always affected by the sound of nature and living world. #Febchantment

050

Simone Faré @cymon.bsky.social · 19/02/2026

Witches always existed and probably they had a role in human history more relevant than we know. Unfortunately, considering they always kept a low profile we have very little information about that so the only available answer is: who knows? #Febchantment

060

Simone Faré @cymon.bsky.social · 19/02/2026

Girls are commonly tricked to become witches. They live a bad life, they have some deep wound or trauma and somebody tell them they can change in such a way they can heal. In the end they obtain power, health, many advantages, but they're also bound to serve Mother Earth needs. #Febchantment

020

Simone Faré @cymon.bsky.social · 17/02/2026

Society doesn't know magic exists so nobody can consider it legal or illegal. Many witches believe that if you use magic to do evil magic will punish you, but there are many evidence saying this is not actually true... #Febchantment

060

Simone Faré @cymon.bsky.social · 16/02/2026

Magic is always about bending reality so probably the most powerful use of magic for a witch could be creating a place completely under her control, some kind of pocket dimension where she is in charge of almost everything, where hide or lure enemies. #Febchantment

Simone Faré @cymon.bsky.social · 16/02/2026

Only witches can wield magic. They can do it in many different ways, but there're not schools or disciplines. A witch find out her way to access magic mostly through personal study. People that are not witches and manupulate magic exists... but... well.. spoiler... #Febchantment

Ilaria tried to answer, but a sharp pain gripped her chest, and she pulled her arms back to hold it.
"Come here, both of you!" Argenta ordered. Glorja and Miran were still near the green candles staring into the darkness. They came to the bed, drawn in by the other girl's screams.
"Glorja, hold her arms, Miran, her legs." Argenta continued to give directions as she took off her backpack, grabbed her makeup bag, and rummaged through it. Luckily, she didn't need to see to find the right bottle.
Ilaria tried to resist when the two boys grabbed her, but even in her delirium, she didn't have the strength. "Arms up, away from your body!" Argenta demanded as she freed her from the sheets and lifted the sweat-soaked T-shirt the girl was wearing. On her thin belly were large, red, bleeding wounds, like claws, that were dripping blood with every breath she took.
"What... what did they do to her?" Glorja asked, distressed.
"The magic," Argenta replied, holding a small bottle filled with black powder over Ilaria's belly, "is trying to get in."

Magic out of control can kill you. Or torture you and then kill you. Or kill people around you. Magic has desires by itself, strong enough to kill who use it if it's not tamed. When magic doesn't kill anyone it can open gates to weird dimension (full of deadly creatures, usually). #Febchantment

Witches hate hierarchies and don't trust each other so it's very difficult for a witch to make the others admit she masters magic. Still, if you succeed killing a witch you were probably better than her. #Febchantment

Simone Faré @cymon.bsky.social · 11/02/2026

Well, magic can fail so you can't trust it too much. Every witch has also a downside, something she doesn't like that she must periodically do to recharge magic and stay alive that can also be considered a weakness. #Febchantment
