I'm adding Good Man Down by Ewert and The Two Dragons to my list of songs for reflecting on the appalling state of the nation. The song is about a woman leaving, but the words "How could you shoot a good man down?" just ring so loudly right now.

The latest CDC #measles update bumps the total US cases in 2025 up to 2,255 cases. And just 23 days into 2026, there have been 416 reported cases, with the majority (338) in South Carolina. This rate may or may not continue, but if it does, there could be over 5,000 cases this year.

The final number of US measles cases in 2025 as reported by the CDC: 2,144 It really did exceed the 2,126 cases reported in 1992... The next-most-recent milestone is 1991 with 9,643 cases. #Measles is fully back in the US. Elimination status may be revoked in the coming weeks.

Pebble watches are coming back in a BIG way. The latest announcement is Pebble Round 2. The new watches capture the spirit of the original pebbles which proved that a thoughtful, low maintenance smartwatch can spark more joy than a bleeding-edge wrist-mounted supercomputer.

People are rewatching Jim Jeffries today. Based on the comments many are missing the point. The Bondi Beach shooting was absolutely horrific, but it does not disprove the merits of gun control. In 2025 so far, the US has had 13,936 gun deaths. Australia has had 76.

By my rough calculation, the Trump shutdowns account for around 59% of the total time the government has spent shutdown (78 out of 132 days) and around 89% of the total cost ($21.7 out of $24.4 billion). (So far) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Governm...

Instead of saying senate democrats caved, say voting against the CR was voting for the lesser evil, but the administration & republicans in congress chose to turn the shutdown into a greater evil rather than work on an agreeable CR. Put the target on the folks choosing to harm the nation.

I felt something odd as I grabbed this part of the railing on my way down the steps of the deck. Focusing on the steps, I barely noticed something crawling on my pinky finger. By the time I realized it was a wasp, I had already been stung twice and a swarm was forming around me. 🏃 🐝🐝🐝

A wasp nest filled with dozens of wasps hanging under the railing of a deck.

The United States is reporting the highest number of measles cases in 33 years. Vaccines prevent measles. Americans need to hear our top health officials say clearly: every child in America should get vaccinated against this terrible disease.

On April 5, I posted 2 predictions about #measles cases. If there are 77 new cases in the next 2 weeks, we'll hit the 1,274 milestone by July exactly as predicted. I would prefer to be wrong.

A key detail I spotted in the CDC's weekly #measles update today: The number of outbreaks in the US has increased from 7 to 10 this week. It was 3 for a while and then steadily increased until this jump. The locations of the 3 new outbreaks are not clear to me. www.cdc.gov/measles/data...

A graph of the number of measles outbreaks in 2025.
It shows 3 outbreaks from February 21 to March 21, then steadily increases from 3 to 7 for March 21 through April 11, and now it has jumped from 7 to 10 in the week of April 11-18.

The next steps are clear. We must ask ourselves — what is even one more tangible thing we can be doing? This will take work, grit, and determination—but this is how change happens. Don't let your inability to do everything undermine your determination to do something in the cause of our country.
