I hate that I can't trust ANY new 3D / raycaster NES project that pops up. Whenever I look deeper, it's always tainted by Claude AI. Every. Single. Time.

Check out this new NES flashcart: www.kickstarter.com/projects/701... It's a lot cheaper than EverDrive N8 Pro, while having some cool enticing features of its own, so it should make it more affordable for more people to play digital releases of NES homebrew games on real consoles.

True ownership of digital media is the ability to back up data from one physical vessel to another, in perpetuity. Physical releases are great, but they don't last forever. If the official distributors of digital media take away ownership rights from their consumers, they will find their own way.

Have you ever seen an NES game render 200+ colors on screen? I'm SLOWLY working on the rest of CrossPaint's 16 sample images. This one shows all color emphasis combos + monochrome mode on sprites and BG. Color emphasis on every line is pretty cool :) #NESdev #NEShomebrew #gamedev #indiedev #8bit

Have you ever fought to make something fit in a PRG bank where it leaves you with literally 0 bytes free? Having a chunk of data overflow by only 5 bytes can motivate you to pull off the most desperate byte-optimizations to make it fit. #NESdev #NEShomebrew #gamedev #indiedev

I've forgotten how much drawing art assets gives me such intense burnout :(

CutterCross @cuttercross.bsky.social · 15/06/2025
I find myself enjoying the process of *refining* graphics far more than actually plotting down a rough sketch of basic geometry. And I think the process of figuring out that messy first draft is the real reason why I'm so slow at drawing art assets.

One of the last things I have to work on for CrossPaint involves a LOT of artwork. Unfortunately, drawing is not my strongest suit. I can't say for sure when it'll all be finished, but I want to thank everyone who has followed this project for this long. ❤️ All of this is just a 1-man-crew. #NESdev

The deed is done. 1-based indexing it is! I've also decided to fully scrap the X-SCROLL parameter, as it just caused confusion with the rest of the UI and was too complicated to use in an art workflow. The CHR Fill tool now also disables sprites and emphasis #NESdev #NES #homebrew #ファミコン #indiedev

UI / UX design question for CrossPaint: Should tools with multiple subtools to have their indices start at 0 or 1? Which makes more sense from a general user perspective? If I started indices at 1, it would exactly describe the pen size in pixels.🤔 #NESdev #NES #homebrew #ファミコン #gamedev #indiedev

#gbdk (and #bbstudio) is getting new NES tilemap layouts! By default we use 1-screen layout for simplicity - but this has scrolling artifacts. The NES can do better. 2kB VRAM allows H / V layout to limit artifacts. And cartridges can also provide VRAM for 4-screen layout to remove them completely
