Hello, I'm at Peterborough city hall for a general committee meeting where councillors will be reviewing the draft Community Planning Permit bylaw. The bylaw is expected to replace the city's existing comprehensive zoning bylaw by the end of June this year.

Chief Betts is now addressing the letter he sent to Coun. Riel. He says it's release to the media was contrary to the confidentiality notice attached and that if it has had an unintended impact to the board, he apologizes. There are no questions about the letter from the board.

Big news out of Peterborough City Hall today: The city's integrity commissioner has found that while Mayor Jeff Leal's use of a racial slur during a lecture at Trent University was "unacceptable" it did not contravene council's code of conduct. I was covering the rally tonight and noted the same thing. For reference, the city did not do this during the November budget protests (which I also covered). There were significantly fewer protesters today. The only major difference was what they were protesting and the colour of their skin.

Hot take but if your argument against paywalls is that they aren't "conducive to innovative methods of revenue development" you're basically admitting that the profit motive is tainting your so-called "news." If you're "open access" to make money and not out of principle, you're not open access.
