Happy October! Need a good horror anthology to read? Look no further!
I‘m looking for a book that... ...will fill me with awe and terror for the natural world. ...will make me distrust every polite smile I see. ...will inspire me to cut down every Flock camera in town. Pictured books include The Writhing, Verdant End, No Trouble at All, and Under a Malevolent Eye.

D. Matthew Urban is one of my favorite Weird fiction writers, and this will be his second time publishing a collection through Cursed Morsels. Absolutely can't wait to share this book with y'all!
A multi-round job interview becomes a dizzying spiral into ominous realms. A child’s obsession with a neighbor’s death prompts an act of theatrical self-destruction. A spider-infested house draws an exterminator into webs stranger than any arachnid’s. A downwardly-mobile couple’s visit to an abandoned subdivision turns nightmarish when they encounter the empty homes’ new owners.

The stories in Nowhere’s Door Is Always Open unfold on thresholds, shifting sites of transition and change as mundane as a birthday, as momentous as first love, as terrifying as a swan dive into another world. Ranging from creeping unease to body-horror freakout, from small-town gothic to online Grand Guignol, this collection poses the question of any beckoning portal: are you ready for what’s on the other side?

Tiffany Morris's kudzu apocalypse story is a visceral and tender nightmare. What does love look like after the world has ended? Read "The Neon Dread of Leaves" and more stories in The Writhing, Verdant End: www.cursedmorselspress.com/product/the-...
There was a quiet writhing of plants sighing and stretching green and blooming over the structures that once hummed busy with cash register beeps and screens chirping blue LED light: a time before the verdant insistence of growth, of blossoming. The peace of the cities became the peace of death: its mechanical rhythms of machinery and capital silenced.

Biological Reality
Briar Ripley Page
I can feel the creature curling in me like a worm. I can feel it sucking the
vitality from my limbs, a great maggot stuck in the swollen meat of my
belly.
I don’t exactly feel revulsion, but it’s very uncomfortable and
inconvenient. What will happen when the little beast tears itself free, I
don’t like to think. I try to ignore its writhing, its sucking, as I push my
squeaky janitor’s cart down the hallway.

In "Burden of Guilt," Briar Ripley Page imagines a future in which each worker is equipped with an External Conscience to wear both on and off the job. What could possibly go wrong? Read an excerpt and, if you like it, order Under a Malevolent Eye: www.cursedmorselspress.com/product/unde...
“Hey there, Asshole!” chirped Terry's External Conscience from its perch above their heart. Its claws dug into their jacket and its tail wrapped loosely around their bicep. Its feminine, British-accented voice pronounced the epithet with robotic neutrality; when the ECs had first become mandatory for all company employees, Terry had thought it funny to program theirs this way, had been mildly surprised there was no safeguard against it. Now, just a few weeks later, they understood: it didn't matter. The only person inconvenienced or hurt by Terry's joke was Terry, who felt the tips of their ears flush every time the EC called them an asshole while they were out in public. (According to the new rule, employees had to wear their ECs at all times, even off the clock. There was no way to mute them.)
“What?” grumbled Terry.
“Your vital signs and microexpressions indicate stress, tension, and possible inappropriate thoughts,” said the EC.

Reminder that we're open for horror and Weird fiction short story collection submissions. Don't self reject, but also, please, PLEASE read the submission guidelines fully. Details here: cursedmorsels.com/submission-c...
Submission Call
Single-author horror and Weird fiction short story collections. 40K to 60K words—no exceptions. The submission window is open until the 2028 Cursed Morsels calendar is filled. Note that I am currently only looking for one Quarter One 2028 release. I will post on social media and our submissions site once submissions are closed.

Things I Want
Gripping, stylized prose. Strangeness and disorientation. Moral messiness. Fiction written for adults. Nuance. Ambiguity. Stories that don’t offer easy catharsis. Queer, anti-capitalist, anti-fascist stories. Misshapen, unmarketable, upsetting, weird shit. I am particularly interested in collections by queer and BIPOC writers.

Things I don't want
Stories that lean more into fantasy and sci-fi than horror and Weird fiction (though lighter fantasy and sci-fi elements are welcome!) Stories with Lovecraft-specific IP. “Kids on bikes” horror. YA fiction. Fairy tale retellings. Preachiness. AI bullshit.

Ashley Torrance stared at the piss stick and let her eyes wander slowly towards the tiny box that held her fate. She’d read the directions about thirty-seven times, until she could no longer deny that she knew how this shit worked. She let the warm liquid waste creep along the absorbent material for more than the recommended three minutes, let it soak until the bundle of nerves that had been her intestines stopped roiling within her meat cage.
Pregnant.

Happy cover reveal day for LONESOME AND FESTERING by @ericraglin1992.bsky.social (me)! @louceph.com did a spectacular job with the art, and @alandistro.bsky.social nailed the typography. You CAN judge the book by this cover. See preorder and review copy details in the posts below. 👇
The cover illustration shows a bunch of men in suits packed into a pantry. Most are slumped over or facing the walls, but one looks up ghoulishly at the viewer and the bare bulb hanging above.A widower reaches his violent breaking point while giving a tour of a haunted coral reef. A student pays off his lunch debt by toiling in the endless, monster-infested caverns beneath his school. An old woman discovers her fate is grotesquely connected to the endangered toads she’s trying to save. A lapsed member of a queer motorcycle gang returns to rekindle a romance, commit arson, and summon Satan.

Lonesome and Festering is Eric Raglin’s latest horror and Weird fiction collection for sickos, featuring stories about fighting for love, surviving dystopia, and becoming your worst self under capitalism and fascism.

The day after Ben Macklin killed his wife, his six-year-old son Henry came home from school with a camera strapped to his chest.

Of course she hadn’t told Ben. She was always doing things like that. They shared a home, but it felt like they were living on different planets. He’d heard about the initiative on the news; he hadn’t connected the dots that it was happening today of all days. Then again, none of this was really planned.

“They sit with binoculars raised, concave lenses staring across the chasm to the green expanses beyond, verdant trees in full bloom, bird song glimpsed, but never heard. Some haven’t moved in days. Some in weeks. The stench is awful. The rusting beach chairs crumble beneath their reclined forms, holdovers from ages past, when there were actually beaches. Their stare never drifts down to what seethes in the pit, what keeps them from spanning the distance to inhabit that other realm of evergreen splendor. There’s a reason the Watchers don’t leave their seats. There’s a reason they have accepted the lives they’ve inherited. The withering. The supposed glory of the final sight. The realm after this realm.”

Reflections From Day 19 Surveilling Christie Tonkin
Charlene Elsby

In front of my face are the screens, but I have not taken on their perspective. I see through them to the devices that broadcast the images to me. The images are two-dimensional, but I see them in three. I do not believe it is an inference but a direct perception of three-dimensionality I do not reconstruct but rather intuit directly, using the screens as media, but all the while she is, and never does she appear to me otherwise than alive.
She is the subject.
Technically, she is the object, the object of all my perceptions, of my thoughts as well, of my imagination. She is what I have taken on as project and as purpose, the key to my fulfillment and promotion within the agency. She is all that they said she was and all I could ever hope she would be. Either one of us could ruin me.

Another story teaser to whet your appetite for paranoid, dark, strange horror. @spocksbrain.bsky.social 's Operation Metro Surge story, "Eyes Don't Melt," featured in Under a Malevolent Eye. Now available for preorder.
Eyes Don’t Melt
By Meagan Kane

Eyelids burst open along Anna’s arms. She scratches at a red clump of lashes growing in thick just below her elbow; puts the kettle on. Her phone buzzes. A helicopter buzzes overhead to match, wet rotary blades grinding the air. Cars honk in the distance. She strains her ears. Fetches her eye kit. She has to ignore the screams a couple of streets away until the water boils, so she plays catch-up with group chats instead; sets the text-to-speech reader going as a safety measure, in case she misses an eye fluttering to life.
You’re reading the Occupation Observation Alert Chat. Today is Day 472 of the ongoing invasion of our city by the federal government—
Does anyone know how to get rid of the eyes for good?
Yesterday we saw multiple incidents where feds posed as observers in an attempt to aid abductions. Refer to the cryptpad link in the description for best practices regarding fed-walker detection—

I've decided this movie theater bathroom (see quoted post) is what happens when Backrooms and Sadia Bies' cover for Lupus in Fabula have a baby.
A person in boxers hunched over the bathroom sink with a wolf coming out of their back. The bathroom is green tiled and painted green, and the perspective is slightly warped. The blood comes out pink, and the title text of this book cover matches that same pink.

One more author announced for our upcoming surveillance horror and Weird fiction anthology! Mae Murray's story is a DARK "laugh so I don't cry" kind of story. Y'all are gonna love it.

“I Spy” by Cynthia Gómez
“Burden of Guilt” by Briar Ripley Page
“Reflections from Day 19 Surveilling Christie Tonkin” by Charlene Elsby
“In Sickness and In Hell” by Joe Koch
“Rest Not, For You Have Scarcely Toiled” by Eric Raglin
