For those you encounter with a conspiracy mindset re: #COVID...we KNEW this family of viruses could cause a pandemic. 1) SARS/MERS preceded COVID 2) We actually have a list of the viral families with the highest pandemic potential (see attached) Source: @science.org www.science.org/cont...

I like how part of the word for spider in Chinese Hanzi is basically "insect" on the left and what looks like a dude running for an exit on the right. #spiders

We're in the phase of newborn where kiddo will happily suck on a finger to calm down. So today when she started fussing my husband turns to me and says: "Give her the finger." I wish I could say I started laughing, but I just nodded and didn't realize what he said until he started laughing.

EL entered popular consciousness after the late Oliver Sacks, on a hunch that EL had similar pathophysiology as Parkinson's disease, experimentally administered L-DOPA to catatonic patients, some of whom made miraculous recoveries, reanimating after decades of catatonia. en.wikipedia.org/wik...

When people are skeptical of long COVID, you may want to point them to Encephelaitis Lethargica (EL). Still unexplained, but many researchers hypothesize that the Spanish Flu was a causative factor. en.wikipedia.org/wik... #longCOVID #infectiousDisease #virology #neuroscience

Oh look an actually relevant Guiness World Record. If this was widespread, it could help a lot with enigmatic rare diseases, mysterious ICU visits, and the like. That is, if we don't lose the pre-existing conditions clause first. 🫠 #genomeSequencing #biotechnology #health #rareDisease

Unrelated to romance but I like how in nearly any other industry this line would be eyebrow-raising, but in biotech we are like 'yep this just in water is wet': "The biotech company currently loses money and analysts expect additional losses while its drugs are still in development."

As a former field researcher, I can confirm this. I got out not because of the danger, but because of how frustrating it was to get statistical significance for your studies because half of your field project would disappear.

Can't believe this is relevant for a second week in a row. #cloud #AWS #outage #maybeAzureThisTime?
A narrative of the AWS outage from October 21, 2025, repurposed for another outage happening now:

'AWS outage: a journey

7:00 - "Probably my WiFi"
7:30 - "Wait, EVERYTHING is down?"
7:45 - checks AWS status page (also on AWS).
8:00 - "So...day off?"
8:30 - Finance: "We're losing 10k/min."
8:45 - That one guy: "Told you, on-premise forever."
9:30 - "We're going multi-cloud after this."

Narrator: They won't.'

Financial instability is also a huge barrier to forming relationships, particularly for men. Society hasn't updated norms here AT ALL, even in a large, liberal city. Me not working outside the home? "Oh okay." My husband not working outside the home? "What is wrong with him you deserve better."

Example: I wanted kids nearly a decade ago, but no way in heck could I afford it. Now, my spouse and I have plans to expand our family *literally contingent* on career/pay milestones. Most of my colleagues, men and women, have similar feelings.

Natalie, PhD @current-hypothesis.bsky.social · 24/10/2025
While this is a real problem, it's also not the only problem. At least in high-cost cities, lack of financial stability/being able to afford children is also a huge pressure. Probably more important than building a relationship with someone.

"By the 1980s, women already outnumbered men at universities. Yet in the private sphere – marriage, domestic labour, child-rearing – conservative norms endured." Said another way: many women realized that marriage was a bad deal in these cultures and opted out.

That seems high for a short block replacement on a straight up Impreza. The block itself is only about $2.2k (probably less for the shop given discounts). What hourly labor rate are they using and how many hours are they estimating?
