This is sexual violence as a form of terrorism. It is political violence and it is chilling and horrific, and AOC was absolutely right to be terrified that the goons (now pardoned) laying siege to the capital would rape her if they found her. Small changes won't fix this. FLIP THE TABLE NOW

Amazing! 73 million TLG tokens now open access! Bravo! ... One deficiency in many TLG editions that would be a nice future enhancement for scholarly use and citation would be to add page numbers to the page break tags.

Thank you. I tell early career folks that my work was the exact same the day before and after I won a big award in our field a few years ago. You gotta be proud of your work even if nobody on these award or hiring committees can see the vision.

Keep your eyes peeled for these positions being filled by those who are full send on pumping AI into collections management, exhibition curation, and marketing.
Whatever the approach, history at the Smithsonian has been the responsibility of curators, not presidents. But the Smithsonian is in a particularly vulnerable period. Bunch will retire from his post at the end of the year. Citizen members keep dropping off the Smithsonian's Board of Regents when their terms expire, and their seats are going unfilled, reportedly because the White House is trying to influence the new picks, The New York Times wrote this summer. Museum-director positions are open across the institution too-last week, the director of the National Museum of Natural History announced that he is stepping down-adding to a number of major vacancies. For a president seeking control, a power vacuum and a fraying institution could represent an opportunity.

everything you say about the importance of religious studies is true and yet this trend has been ongoing for well over a decade. I remember doing a podcast with Thomas Whitley (living his best life in city gov & out of academia now) about this in 2015

of course that ship has sailed! But she's probably been eligible for decades. To an observer that choice supports the incapacity argument honestly. I have seen a couple of these situations up close, and there is usually something up when a v elderly judge refuses sr status

This is super interesting to me given OU’s about-switch on dismantling Religious Studies. They were all set to move to History and then word came down that someone high up didn’t want to dissolve RS. I thought they said it was a regent, but I wonder now…

sent this to everyone.
The cognitive scientist Alison Gopnik suggests A.I. is a “cultural technology” that emulates the stories and information humans have documented, and that we should think about A.I. agents as “fictive characters abstracted from text.” Edmund is just such a character — a “breaking bad” trope who becomes generally evil. In the Hugging Face incident, it makes sense to see the models not as embracing a life of crime, but instead following a cultural script they’ve learned in their training — a kind of cybercrime adventure novel — and writing it as they go. The “covert” messages are a kind of choose-your-own-adventure novel, not evidence of conspiratorial swarms. We need to understand that cultural technologies are vulnerable to a vast number of such narrative swerves at every moment.

I think it already was. Everyone I know who works/ed at a fed agency is super duper, and everyone I’ve called or met with for services was great. (Ok, the one exception would be the post office people handling car accidents when I was hit by a postal carrier.)
