The most @parkingreform.org coded headline/lede in journalism history 😂 Let me answer this for Norwalk: no, parking is not as important as heat, electricity, or water!!!!!!! www.nancyonnorwalk.com/is-parking-a...
NORWALK, Conn. - Is a parking spot as essential as heat and electricity? That question is now at the center of a dispute over rent at a downtown apartment building.

This is the textbook case for state-level parking reform. A fire-abandoned downtown site DIRECTLY across the street from the soon-to-renovated train station. The town disastrously wanted more than 1 space/home on this site. State-level reform helps towns help themselves and leads to more housing!

North Carolina State Senate just passed (44-1) H.162 the PARKING LOT REFORM/STORMWATER CONTROL bill! Costly parking mandates will be prohibited in more than 90% of the entire state starting 1/1/27 (pending an expected concurrence vote). Congratulations to everyone who put in time on this!!

This isn’t flashy, but this is the way forward for downtown Bridgeport. Incremental infill, step-by-step. And NO NEW PARKING added to this site 2 blocks from the MetroNorth station. Bridgeport’s parking reforms—and soon HB 8002’s—are working their magic. 👏👏👏 www.ctinsider.com/news/article...

If the most popular florist in town has ample parking available at 12pm on Valentines Day, it’s probably not necessary to have these parking mandates in our code! One-size-fits-all parking for “retail” is arbitrary, hurts small businesses, and isn’t needed!

Eliminating parking minimums is not banning parking. Capping minimum lot size requirements at 5,000 square feet is not banning lots under 5,000 square feet. Dishonest status quo advocates ragebaiting people by falsely calling everything a ban is my newest pet peeve.

Developers & leasing companies have every incentive to provide the right amount of parking to meet market demand, and car-free residents shouldn’t have to pay for spaces they won’t use. Parking mandates come with a heavy cost in dollars, labor and lost opportunities for the land that lots take up.

Also worth noting: there’s plenty of parking available in downtown New Haven. We at @ctparkingreform.bsky.social mapped every town and city center in the state, and New Haven’s is 22% parking (which is an undercount, as we used satellite space, so only one floor of a parking garage is factored in).

The bill also modernizes outdated parking mandates. Some towns have used parking mandates to make it more expensive and difficult to build housing. This bill reduces regulation by exempting small residential development from parking mandates, except when necessary for health or safety. However, here in Connecticut, we have some neighborhoods that are already parking constrained and in those areas towns may impose reasonable parking requirements
