Editing allows us to go back, meet those old friends and, listening once again to their voice, hear more clearly when they say: "This is who I am. And you didn't get it totally right the first time. Lucky for us, we get a chance to clarify, before I get a chance to meet the world."

In this way editing, though it is a painful part of the writing process, presents itself as the true shibboleth, separating those who love what writing can do for them versus those who believe in what writing can do for everyone else.

A person impossible to meet outside the pages the writer has filled with love and tenderness, the harshness of the world, the cruelty of men. The characters are what change minds, allow for great debate, foster the kind of community that only stories can build.

But the characters...the people we meet and place within the boarders of the narrative, they are the great gift. The boon above all boons. Every well-written character within a story, having animus and charisma, allows every reader to meet a person they otherwise would never meet.

We build these worlds, fill them with mountains and rivers and valleys, beckon the sun out of the ocean and ask the moon to stay and stay and stay, so long as the scene requires. So long as it suits our writing purpose. So long as the story demands.

But most importantly, and less popularized, is that the initial draft lets grants us an opportunity to experience the most transformative effect of storytelling: Xenophilia.

The first draft allows us to dream. Lets the writer look toward the horizon line of what we hope to become. Allows us to dare greater, reach farther, maintain the wanderlust so many storytellers know as the Writer's Reward.

Over the last weeks I've been editing a manuscript. I hate the editing part of the job. It is uncomfortable, brings into focus all the inadequacies and failed compositional mechanics that read so well in the initial draft, but in review, fail to match the sweetness of the well water of the rest.
