Before 9/11 I didn't think it mattered who was President of the United States. I had voted for Ross Perot and Ralph Nader. I sincerely believed the structures around the president so constrained his options that any person in the position would act the same.

In early 2000 the Supreme Court appointed George W. Bush president. I figured Al Gore would've been the same.

Then the planes hit the Twin Towers.

I didn't change my mind immediately, of course. But over the years after it became clear that there are ideas, there are plans, out in the world, and there are people waiting for their opening to implement them. And if those people happen to be in positions of power when the opening occurs....

There are people who want the U.S. to invade Iraq and take their oil. There are people who want the U.S. to invade Venezuela and take their oil. There are people who want to invade Afghanistan, bomb Yemen, retake the Panama Canal, bring back Jim Crow, exterminate the Jews, the Muslims, the Black, the brown. There are people who want even worse things, if you can imagine that.

Chris Rywalt:
9/11 was both singularly horrific and all too commonplace around the world. As a country, as a culture, we should have emerged from it vowing to make the world a better place. But we messed up. We let the wrong people lead us.

I do think we can do good again. We can make things better. Not just we Americans, we all of us across the world. Too many of us went down the wrong path for the past 25 years. We can turn around.

I believe that.
