Two of the Lewis Chessmen currently on display at the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh. Discovered in 1831 on a beach at Uig on the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides, the chessmen date to the late 12th or early 13th century. 📸 My own. #FindsFriday #LewisChessmen

1,900 year-old Roman birthday invitation! 🎉 🥳 From Claudia Severa to her friend Sulpicia Lepidina, it’s one of the earliest known examples of writing in Latin by a woman! Found at Vindolanda fort, it gives a glimpse of social life on Rome’s northern frontier! 📷 me #RomanFortThursday #Archaeology
My photo shows a Roman wooden writing tablet (Vindolanda tablet no. 291) with a birthday invitation written in ink. The invitation is from Claudia Severa, wife of Aelius Brocchus, to Sulpicia Lepidina, wife of Flavius Cerealis, the commander at Vindolanda fort on the northern frontier of Britannia. The writing tablet is made up of two square, wafer thin, pieces of wood, displayed side by side. Each piece is now somewhat fragmentary, with pieces of wood missing in places. The wood is mid-brown in colour with dark text, and is displayed on a cream mount. The text is written in cursive Latin. Most of the text was written by a scribe, but Claudia adds in her own hand “I shall expect you, sister. Farewell, sister, my dearest soul, as I hope to prosper, and hail” making this one of the earliest known examples of writing in Latin by a woman. Dimensions: Width 22.3 cm × Height 9.6 cm. Dated c. 97 - 103 AD. From Vindolanda Fort, Northumberland. Now in the British Museum collections.

On 13th October 1399 Henry Bolingbroke crowned King Henry IV in Westminster Abbey. The day chosen as the Feast of Edward the Confessor and to mark the last meeting of Henry with his father John of Gaunt, before Henry went into exile. They were never to meet again. The high altar Westminster Abbey.

Hearth in the interior of a Japanese traditional folk house. Photography by GS30Z on photohito
Sunken directly into the dark, hand-burnished planking of a traditional folk house (minka), a square wooden hearth (irori) forms the quiet, contemplative center of the domestic space. Within its ash-filled pit, a black cast-iron kettle (tetsubin) sits upon a sturdy metal tripod, catching the gentle, residual heat of unseen embers below. Surrounding the raised timber collar of the hearth, six tightly woven circular straw cushions (enza) are arranged across the dark floorboards in quiet expectation. A soft, low-angled wash of natural light filters across the threshold from an unseen aperture beyond, glazing the smooth, time-matured grain of the floor and highlighting the spiral weave of the straw mats. The scene evokes a deeply grounded sensory atmosphere: the low, soothing hum of water beginning to simmer—a sound traditionally likened to wind rustling through mountain pines (matsukaze)—the faint, dry aroma of wood ash, charcoal (sumi), and aged cedar, the cool, silk-like touch of polished floorboards beneath bare feet, and the comforting, localized warmth radiating from the hearth pit into the cool ambient air of the room. Photographed by GS30Z, this interior captures the enduring spatial and social nucleus of Japanese vernacular architecture (minka). For centuries throughout rural Japan, particularly during the Edo and Meiji periods, the irori functioned as the indispensable thermal, culinary, and communal heart of the household. Beyond its role in boiling water, cooking meals, and providing winter warmth, the smoke rising from the open fire performed a vital structural duty: continually ascending to smoke-cure the exposed roof timbers and thatched thatch overhead, protecting the building from moisture, decay, and insects. The construction of the hearth and its surrounding furnishings exemplifies the philosophy of mingei (folk craft) and monozukuri (artisanal dedication to functional, natural design).

Been allowing this critter to set-up house above my porch, because he’s not bothering anything, keeps the flying pests away, and seems fitting for the season. The poor delivery gal about had a heart attack. Sorry, ma’am! Also, Happy Halloween!

Nestled in the secluded mountains of Obanazawa, Yamagata Prefecture, Ginzan Onsen (literally "Silver Mountain Hot Spring") traces its origins to the early seventeenth century, when it flourished as a silver mining site during the Edo period.
Enfolded within a snow-bound mountain gorge at dusk, the multi-tiered wooden inns of Ginzan Onsen rise like luminous lanterns along the banks of the steam-wreathed Ginzan River. Heavy, pillowing drifts of fresh snow weigh upon dark tiled rooflines (kawara), balconies, and wooden eaves, while soft, swirling flakes fill the indigo twilight air. Cast-iron gas lamps lining the stone promenade emit a warm, golden radiance that glints upon the snow-slick bridges where travelers beneath dark umbrellas navigate the evening. Calligraphic wooden signboards (kanban) and paper-screened windows glow softly from within, framing the scene in rich chiaroscuro. The photograph evokes a deeply immersive sensory atmosphere: the sharp, freezing bite of mountain air mingling with thick, sulfurous plumes of geothermal steam rising from the riverbed, the soft crunch of snow and the rhythmic clatter of wooden clogs (geta) echoing off dark timber facades, the faint aroma of woodsmoke and hot mineral water, and the comforting contrast of golden gaslight against the icy mountain chill.
Following the decline of the mines and a disastrous flood in 1913 that destroyed much of the original settlement, local innkeepers rebuilt the village along both sides of the river during the late Taisho and early Showa eras (1910s–1930s). This reconstruction birthed the town's signature multi-storied wooden ryokan, constructed in a distinctive fusion of traditional Japanese timber joinery and subtle Western structural influences known as Taisho Roman. These historic four-story wooden structures, adorned with delicate kote-e (plaster relief carvings) and carved cedar balustrades, represent a landmark achievement in Japanese monozukuri (artisanal mastery and heritage woodworking). The installation of gas street lamps in the mid-twentieth century preserved the nostalgic, romantic atmosphere of a bygone era, establishing Ginzan Onsen as a monument to Japan's bathhouse culture and rural architectural heritage.

Mabon is a modern Pagan festival marking the autumn equinox, when day and night are nearly equal. A celebration of harvest, gratitude and nature’s slow turn towards winter, its modern name was taken from Mabon ap Modron, a figure in medieval Welsh legend. #FolkloreSunday
