Beyond the specifics of the Vinyl story, this is emblematic of the consolodation and retraction in Australian media. It's very tough for young and early-career journos to get a foot in the door, and there are so few places for freelancers to pitch. State of affairs industry-wide is dire.

Head has been down working on this investigation into Vinyl Media — which now claims to be the 4th biggest publisher in Aus. Vinyl takes an openly tech startup approach to publishing that staff say is causing confusion & uncertainty. By our estimate 20 perm editorial staff run 14 media titles.

Top read from @rachelwithers.bsky.social. The response on socials to Spender's decision to vote with Coalition and One Nation against reforms was more negative than I expected. She has been one of the most active in courting the young progressive cohort online, wonder if they will stick with her?

Allegra Spender failed to put her money where her mouth is on tax reform. Now what?
Independent MPs talk a big talk on the need to rein in property tax breaks. But when it came to the crunch, most voted against Labor’s tax reform bill.

Objectively insane story for the Tele to run, but it perfectly encapsulates the political moment: "When my side does it that's heroic, when my opponents do it they should be jailed". Progressives and right-wingers are flat out pointing out each others' hypocrisies, which literally does not matter.

Lots of talk of life satisfaction in Australia being worse now than during COVID. I hate to be the bearer of bad news/reality, but it’s a beat up. There’s NO appreciable difference between 2020 and 2025 rates. Decline since 2014 is a worry though. www.abs.gov.au/statistics/p...
On average, overall life satisfaction was 7.1 in 2025, similar to 2020 (7.2), but lower than 2019 (7.5) and 2014 (7.6).
