Feather maintenance Kingfishers spend a huge amount of time looking after their feathers. They apply a special oil to repel water, they get rid of dirt and mites and also ensure the feathers are all alligned correctly to ensure they keep their aerodynamic shape when diving.

A young roadrunner is standing on the edge of a seed platform 4 feet up on a post. The bird jumped up there scaring several doves that were eating seeds.

Day 27 - King Eider ( Somateria spectabilis ) for #AvianAugust2026 A large sea duck that breeds along Northern Hemisphere Arctic coasts. Ref 📷: August Davidson-Onsgard macaulaylibrary.org/asset/166081... #Bird #WildlifeArt #ornithology #NatureArt #SciArt #BirdArt #BskyArt #AvianAugust
Digital Sketch study of a King Eider duck. A fantastic sea duck of the high Arctic. Breeding male is particularly shocking, as if you left a child unsupervised with a set of paints; it would be very difficult to mistake this bird for anything else. At a distance, look for black back with “sails” sticking up, powdery-blue nape, and enormous orange knob on the face. Immature male is variable but usually dark brown or blackish overall with paler breast and orange bill. Female is buffy-brown with a blackish bill shaped to look like she’s smiling. Extensive breeding range across the Arctic tundra; winters at slightly lower latitudes, rarely as far south as the mid-Atlantic states of the U.S. Most often seen singly or in small flocks on the ocean, often mixed with Common Eider or other sea ducks. Rare on inland lakes, but more regular inland than Common Eider. Females and young males more regularly seen further south than adult males.

Females are duller with a scaly back. Gathers in small groups and often joins mixed-species flocks. Frequently visits feeding stations.

Digital sketch study of a FlameFaced Tanager. An unmistakable small tanager with bright red-orange face that fades to yellow on the crown and nape. Also note black ear patch, black back, opalescent greenish underparts and shoulder patch, and tawny vent. East slope birds are brighter red on the face, whereas west slope birds are more orange. Occurs from about 1,200–2,500 m, within forest or at edges or clearings. Found in pairs or small groups within mixed-species flocks, usually in the canopy. Visits fruit feeders.

Today is #CrowandRavenAppreciationDay 🎉! Eurasian Jackdaws are very opportunistic and adaptable omnivores, live in large social groups and can adapt and live with humans often inhabiting towns and cities. #Crow #Raven #Jackdaw #Bird #BirdArt #birdartist #SciArt #NatureArt #WildlifeArt
Digital Sketch Study of Eurasian Jackdaws, displaying one portrait view, one in flight, and a side profile of the animal's skull.

Eurasian Jackdaws are diminutive crows, easily recognizable by their gray-on-charcoal color pattern, pale eyes, and piercing calls. They are at home in towns and cities, where they nest in chimneys, forage on lawns, and roost in wooded parks. Jackdaws are very social birds, gathering in flocks to feed together and ply the wind in coordinated, acrobatic flight. They typically feed on invertebrates, fruits, seeds, carrion, and even refuse, but some individuals learn to raid nests at seabird and heron colonies.
