So that huge personal news has finally manifested. Jess and I found our dream house, five minutes from where we live now, on 5 wooded acres inside of Austin, with hiking trails, and a third story office with Hill Country views. And we closed this morning! Here’s a peek at my new office and view!

ALPHA GANG. It’s like a Wes Anderson movie as if directed by Quentin Dupieux that turns into a Peckinpah movie. Tonally BONKERS and NOT for everyone. But it was for me. By the time the Nietzer Ebb needle drop happens, I was in love. Full of heart and culty weirdness. Gonna be divisive, but great.

PATHETIC FALLACY is Adam Egypt Mortimer’s best film by a country mile. It’s got a Panos Cosmatos look and feel, but a huge emotional heart that wrecked me. Kid Cudi is amazing as the lead and editing by @veradrew22.bsky.social gives it a dreamy unearthly feel. A great fucking movie. LOVED IT!

IN A VIOLENT NATURE 2 fucking rips. Where the first film follows “Jason” this one follows “Tommy”. It’s a fun, fantastic, tight camp slasher. Lots of great kills and is a worthy successor to the original. Its different enough that if the first one didn’t work for you, this one might.

PRIMETIME. Holy fucking shit. Two days ago I believed Malkovich had the Oscar in the bag. Now it’s a two horse race. Pattinson is incredible. Best of his career great. An unbelievably great movie that will garner nonstop awards talk. One of the best movies I’ve seen all year. So fucking good.

A PRAYER FOR THE DYING. Bleak, depressing, heartbreaking, and possibly the best representation of what it is to be a husband I’ve ever seen. Incredible performances. Expect this to play the Cinematech’s Bleak Week every five years or so. A great heartbreaker.

RIVER. All the buzz is right. A stripped down, gnarly slasher that delivers everything promised on the label. A family gets stranded on a river and gets chased by a mask wearing maniac. Beautifully shot, very well acted, tense, terrifying, and fun! Just fucking great.

When a brother and sister who are half vampires get robbed and murdered by a band of thugs, they rise from the grave for very bloody revenge with fights from the choreographer of NIGHT COMES FOR US. BEWARE BOIUNA is really fun. When a ship full of doctors runs afoul of some nasty dudes, it causes a chase down the river through the jungle. But the goddess of the jungle, a massive, deadly snake, has other plans for everyone. Eating them. Her plan is eating them. Great pissed off nature flick!

Oh, man. They reissued TRIUMPH AND TORMENT. When I was working with Marvel, Kevin once asked me my bucket list Marvel movie I’d want to write. I told him this. If they ever do a third Strange film, I hope this is what they do. Strange and Doom team up to save Victor’s mother from hell. Amazing book.

Every year, for my birthday, I take about a dozen of my closest local friends out for dinner at a favorite restaurant. This year, I wanted to destroy the Verdad Fiesta Board for 4. 3 of us tore it up as best we could. The rest is breakfast. So. Fucking. Good.
