Part of me thinks it would be quite neat to emulate some of this hardware to use it in a more modern way. Fake inputs (videos etc) and just see how it all goes

The Action Replay III on the Amiga. Just amazing being able to use it to find your own cheats and mess around. I wish my favourite emulators supported it

Urgh, I don't mind the use for code, but reading Claude-written technical documents is incredibly painful. I suspect Claude is one of the worst though. Personally, I mostly try to use Claude for diagrams and sanity checking the documents, although I suspect I'll end up needing AI for speed.

What rate is it in Germany or France? If it's higher, should ours really be lower?

Cartoon by Stephen Collins for The Guardian. Script as follows:

[scene is Winston Churchill in a bbc studio, giving his 'finest hour' speech]

1
CHURCHILL:
The whole fury and might of the enemy must very soon be turned on us.

2
CHURCHILL:
Hitler knows that he will have to break us in this Island or lose the war.

3
CHURCHILL:
If we can stand up to him, all Europe may be free
and the life of the world may move forward into broad, sun-

BBC PRESENTER:
Thank you prime minister

4
BBC PRESENTER:
Mr hitler, your response?

5
HITLER [in the studio]:
Vell zis is hysterical woke nonsense as usual from mr Churchill

6
HITLER:
What we are proposing -

CHURCHILL:
Hang on

7
HITLER:
Let me finish - what we are proposing eez a simple power-sharing arrangement -

8
CHURCHILL:
What's he doing here

BBC PRESENTER:
It's important we hear both sides of the debate

9
CHURCHILL:
This isn't a debate
You don't debate fascists

10
HITLER:
Oh here we go with ze Godwins law!

11
HITLER:
Why must you people always compare ze things you don't like to 'fascists, Nazis, Hitler'...

CHURCHILL:
Because you are a fascist Nazi Hit-

12
HITLER [standing up, saluting]:
RAUSS!

BBC PRESENTER:
*Please* Mr Churchill let him speak

As a slight aside, my cooking machine has scales so it can weigh things as you put them in, but also came with a little tray so you could literally use it as incredibly expensive scales. You might enjoy something like the thermomix or one of its myriad knockoffs (mine is a Kenwood cookeasy)

Docker's painful attempt at monetisation effectively made them less "everywhere", but most server software will now be built as a container and deployed as such, even if the components to do it don't use the actual "docker" technology at all.

Containers are pretty much everywhere nowadays - k8s is built on them and tools like snap are used on desktop Linux for sandboxing - I think docker itself is less visible but the tech is everywhere

My current (2016) car has a speed limiter that you can set. Makes it a lot easier to keep to 20 or so as it just stops it accelerating when you hit the set speed. I must admit it's really hard now to drive without it.

We should make social media apps have periodic splash screens like cigarette packets. Have pictures of sad looking people and big warnings that last on the screen for 10 seconds or so. Or even have little short-form videos that demonstrate miserable people.

Is there a practical alternative of "near a bus route that links up with Caltrain"? (Or preferably several). Might make the cost lower and not necessarily add substantial delay depending upon route

Seconding another person who says check pressure. There's usually a guage on the front of the boiler, if it's very low then it might just need refilling. Usually a tap or similar near the boiler that will do that

So for proper trade agreements there are rules of origin, but most of the time without a trade agreement there's usually just a flat rate. This will be a mess

Is there the prospect that we might slightly benefit from the EU tariffs on the US? For example, if EU firms switch to British manufacturers (from US ones)? (Obviously this might well be completely outweighed by recession)
100 1
crnflke.bsky.social @crnflke.bsky.social · 27/03/2025
It feels pretty thin, and I also don't quite see how you get to 25% with that, because the EU generally has a larger state sector as well (and thus has higher taxes generally). You could look at what the tax burden looks like on similar businesses for exports I guess to come up with real numbers
000 0
crnflke.bsky.social @crnflke.bsky.social · 27/03/2025
I think (and I might be torturing it out of this) - that the argument is something like this: EU takes a large percentage of its tax take in VAT, whereas the US does not. Thus the US has to have higher tax rates elsewhere which impact businesses - so they are at a disadvantage

Is this an issue with the OBR not being independent enough or is it a remit question or? I assumed the idea with the OBR was that they would be there to keep the government honest, but if their projections are insane then are they achieving it?

As I understand it (not American, but followed how this would affect the UK post-brexit) - all of this is filled out ahead of time as it's quite complex. You basically say what you have (and what category) and whether you're using specific rules or not. Sometimes multiple trade agreements can apply.

The one (randomly) interesting fact when I got mine was that they suggested platinum for women (easier to resize, posher) and palladium for men (neither of us like gold). Palladium is cheaper, but harder to resize if your finger changes over time. As others say - we just asked at a jeweller though.
