Who is Jaimie Johnstone, and why is an obviously racist clown being given oxygen by SBS: www.sbs.com.au/news/article/sbs-exa…
Screenshot of an SBS article on Money Transfers, saying “A Money Transfer Australia report said $35 billion was sent from Australia as remittances in 2024, including nearly $7
billion to India.
"When someone earns that money in
Australia, but remits part of that portion
overseas, that portion is not being spent
hereẠỊpolitical commentator Jaimie
Johnstone said in a recent social media
post about the report.
"That money is not going to an Australian
cafe or restaurant. It's not being spent with
an Australian tradie, it's not being used to
purchase Australian products, not in an
Australian shop, not circulating within an
Australian household.
"And if we're going to have a serious
national conversation about immigration,
surely capital flowing out of our domestic
economy should be part of that
conversation too.”Another screenshot of the same SBS article, where the basis of Johnstone’s claims are debunked by an ANU RLEconomics Professor, saying “But Ryan Edwards, an associate economics
professor at the Australian National
University, says we should be sceptical of
these numbers.
"We don't really measure money going out
very well... those numbers are actually
much softer," he said.
Even if those estimates were correct, "that
would still be under 1 per cent of our
economy" and tax had already been paid on
the income.
He noted the argument against remittances
didn't account for the benefits migrants
bring.”

In news that surprises nobody… Aliexpress is weird.
A screenshot of a recent email from AliExpress, with a 3x3 grid highlighting various products they sell.

One of the products, which is totally out of place from the technical items in the grid is paper with an invisible ink that shows up under light.

The weird part of it is that the piece of paper has the words bareback only written on it.

There’s claims circulating the internet that this product with an ‘interesting’ shape is being sold at Kmart in Australia. It’s a fake - not on companies’ website or official channels; shelf tag and font are wrong; their product codes are always 8 digits; low quality image & metadata scrubbed.
Image claiming to be a photo of a product, taken in an Australian Kmart store. Purporting to be from their home brand Anko, the product is a silver-coloured Personal Key Keeper, which is shaped like a butt plug. The photo claims to show the product in a box, that is seemingly well oversized for the claimed object inside it - which is one of many inconsistencies that immediately debunk this as a fake.

Oh Transperth, I’m a nerd. You better believe I have, and use, a shortcut for reporting unjustifiable late departures. A Bus Operations Employee, whose primary job is to drive on-time departures and stand management, will no doubt be getting a talking to.
Screenshot of an email I’ve sent to Transperth Enquiries this morning, about an unjustified late bus departure.

Route: 502
Bus/Carriage/Vehicle number: 3090
Location: Stop 23699; Bill Creek Interchange
Bateman WA 6150
Australia
Location GPS Coordinates: -32.04675699506543,
115.8539192226323 ()
Scheduled departure time: 18 Sep 2026 at 07:48
Actual departure time: 7:52:48 am
Observed reason for late departure:
A Female Transperth Bus Operations Employee decided to hold up the bus for three minutes by engaging in a social conversation - that had no bearing or relevance to the route, operations, or other matters which would
justify or support a delayed departure (was within earshot of the entire conversation, which included a discussion around leave balances). Bus was also already late to stand (not arriving until after departure time), which further impacted on time departure due to
60+ passengers boarding.

Ok, geeked again now that some Aliexpress parts arrived.
Screenshot from the Unifi Management interface for my home network, showing my Homelab now connected via a 10Gb SFP.

Granted the next step up the chain meshing back to my router is still only a 2.5Gb link, but that's a problem for another time when I upgrade the switch to a 10Gb switch.

I have to use mesh as the uplink on this router, as even being a rental the roof space is inaccessible, and running cables in velcro carpet tunnels isn't my preference.

The AP used for the mesh uplink already supports 10Gb for when I lose my mind and drop AUD 1k on Unifi's USW-Pro-XG-8-PoE; and upgrade the mesh router at the other end.

And finally… Katzmann tells the cookers, they have to pay 80% of the AGS’s costs in responding to their rubbish. Those total costs were in the order of $300k; so those crowd funding donations and assets sold to fund it will get more than a little depleted.
COSTS
191 That leaves the question of the costs of the interlocutory application. Since the lion's share of the work (including all the argument at the hearing) related to the summary judgment/strike out application, upon which the respondents prevailed, I propose to order that the applicants pay 80% of the respondents' costs.
000
I can’t believe its not @twcau @crispykangaroo.com · 12/08/2026
But the Clive Palmer promise didn’t get much weight from Katzmann, with the legal version of “Put your money where your moth is, and prove you have it too.”
182 It is difficult to put much weight on
Mineralogy's promise in the absence of evidence about its financial position; in view of the fact that it is a promise made to Dr McCann, not to the Court; and without any evident basis upon which it could be enforced.
100
I can’t believe its not @twcau @crispykangaroo.com · 12/08/2026
And how the hell was this lede… Clive Palmer threw his money behind this cooker case! Make a promise of $312k of funding as security for costs in a proceeding. Clive Palmer, a friend of the cooker… what a surprise.
169 In order to prepare for the possibility that the respondents might succeed in their application for security for costs, Dr McCann approached a number of third parties to seek assistance in meeting an order of the Court requiring the payment of security for costs. Exhibited to her affidavit was an email she received from Johnathan Shaw, a solicitor who acts on behalf Mineralogy Pty Ltd dated 11 July 2024 containing a promise on behalf of Mineralogy, in these terms:

I act for Mineralogy Pty Ltd.
I refer to the application for
security for costs made by
the
respondents
proceedings NSD 349 of
2023 in which an order is
sought that the Applicants
pay into Court, either by a
bank guarantee or cash or
in an alternate form
acceptable to the Registrar;
the sum of $312,000
exclusive of GST as initial
security for the
Respondents' costs of the
proceeding.
100
I can’t believe its not @twcau @crispykangaroo.com · 12/08/2026
And the cooker behind the proceeding - flushed their own money down the SS Toilet. Took out loans, sold property, and more.
166 In order to meet "all costs and outlays" in the proceeding "when they have become due", Dr McCann personally took out several loans, sold a beachfront commercial block of land that was intended for her business expansion and has made other arrangements to reduce her personal and business financial obligations. She deposed that this was necessary to cover the shortfall between
money raised through crowdfunding and the
actual cost of running the proceeding.
100
I can’t believe its not @twcau @crispykangaroo.com · 12/08/2026
And boy oh boy, are the fools in the cooker movement and their money so quickly parted.
164 Documents annexed to Ms Gill's affidavits reveal that by 17 June 2024 $485,811 had been raised through crowdfunding from 715 donors and
by 29 November 2024 $558,087 had been raised from 1,016 donors, all for the purpose of funding this proceeding. The crowdfunding page of the class action website, which is apparently administered by the applicants' lawyers, boasts that "several very generous amounts have also been paid directly to the Applicants' solicitors trust account. The evidence shows that by 17 June 2024 the Mighty Cause crowdfunding page had received $172,820 in donations from 324
donors.
100
I can’t believe its not @twcau @crispykangaroo.com · 12/08/2026
Seems Stripe has a backbone, choosing not to let the cookers collect donations with their tools.
163 Dr McCann deposed that she established an unincorporated association with the not-for-profit purpose of fundraising for the proceeding, styled "No More Silence". Donations from the public have been collected "on the express basis that if
[the applicants are] successful and costs
recovered, the donations will be returnedỊẠại
Exhibited to her affidavit is a transaction record for the donations received by No More Silence between 1 January 2022 to 4 July 2024. Dr McCann also deposed that, before establishing No More Silence, she collected crowdfunding donations via a "Mighty Cause" fundraising page until Stripe, the payment processor, closed the account in March 2023.

Finally got around to finishing the Katzmann judgement on the cookers and vaccines… and still some killer paragraphs. There’s comments about the claimants’ BS that the Australian Government Solicitor about how they should recover their costs through taxation.
157 As I indicated earlier, and based on certain assumptions he was asked to make (not all of which were justified) Mr Grisenti called into question Ms Gill's evidence about the costs AGS would likely recover on taxation.

Oh lawd. Boomers moaning that they don’t want to downsize their homes - all because they’d have to pay ~5% in taxes on the sale price and their own moving costs (like every other normal human), and they think that’s too much.
Screenshot from part of the article in question. Saying: Along with from the huge emotional toll that
accompanies leaving a long-term home, the
associated costs spiralled out of control.
"By the time you've bought and sold and
moved, you're kissing goodbye well over
$60,000ạẠỊạCilia told nine.com.au.
"It actually makes sense as to why a lot of
people stay in their larger homes... because
the options of downsizing you do play with
what I consider to be inflated costs for
propertiesạẠại
Doris and her family found it difficult to find
an appropriate single-storey house, villa or
townhouse within her budget.
The only other option, apart from staying in
the family home she could not physically
look after, was finding a similarly expensive
retirement village.
"When you do find one, you're competing
against every other downsizer and first home
buyer as wellẠỊCilia added.Screenshot from part of the article in question. Saying: Some states offer a one-off pensioner
concession or exemption for homes up to a
certain value, but if you aren't eligible, this
property tax can be sky-high.
In Sydney, stamp duty on the median home
price of $1.75 million is $78,262.
And in Melbourne, stamp duty on the median
property price of $1.083 million is $62,326.
Cilia said some of her clients have
grudgingly cancelled their plans to downsize
to an apartment or townhouse because of
this cost.
Instead, they are trapped in large family
homes with empty bedrooms and physically
demanding maintenance.
"They don't necessarily want these big
houses, but it's just made so hard for them to
actually make that move," she explained.
"A lot of them would be quite happy with two
or three bedrooms. They aren't suited for the
massive ongoing cost of a big house."

It seems that Katzmann’s Paragraph 3 describing this third revision over-simplified just how bad this was. He continues to go to town on it in Para 66:
66 The 3FASOC is replete with recitations of
immaterial facts; untethered, acontextual
references to legislation; and a morass of
infuriating cross-referencing which makes the
critical allegations nigh impossible to decipher. Reading it is a herculean task. Trying to make sense of it could drive the reader mad. Identifying the material facts is like looking for a needle in a haystack. It would be oppressive to require the respondents to plead to it. If it were permitted to stand, it would likely severely delay a fair trial and prejudice the respondents in attempting to
mount a defence: see Fuller v Toms at [18].

And more sick legal burns from Katzmann, after spending more than 30 paragraphs explaining - ELI5 style, at least for the legal fraternity - how courts and process works for the applicants in this matter.
Screenshot of Paragraph 62 of Katzmann’s ruling in this case, reading:

62) It is true, as the applicants submitted, that this is a complex case. But the 3FASOC makes it impossibly complex, so much so that it defies the fundamental principles of pleading. It is not only likely to cause prejudice, embarrassment and delay, it is inevitable that it will have those results. Large parts of it are incoherent, unintelligible, ambiguous, impenetrable and/or expressed at a high level of generality. In critical aspects it lacks precision. It suffers from both narrative prolixity and the inclusion of irrelevant detail such that it is not a pleading to which the respondents can reasonably expect to plead.“

It gets better. How often does an Australian judge use Unwisely, or pious, in the decision?
Screenshot of Point 25 of Katzmann’s judgement, saying:

25 On 24 January 2024 the applicants' lawyers wrote to AGS advising that they had considered the issues raised in its letter of 17 November 2023, and proposed filing a second further amended statement of claim which would incorporate the further and better particulars as requested. Unwisely, as it turned out, the respondents agreed to this course and on 9 February 2024 I made orders in chambers by consent enabling the applicants to file any second further amended statement of claim by 1 March 2024 and the respondents to file and serve any interlocutory application for orders for summary judgment and/or striking out the pleadings by 12 April 2024.Screenshot of Point 29 of Katzmann’s judgement, reading:

“29 On 17 April 2024 I made orders requiring the applicants to file any 3FASOC and a concise statement by 7 May 2024, the latter in the pious hope that it might clarify the applicants' claims.”

Cafe dog, or at least an Under Construction Cafe dog. #DogsOfMastodon #Perth
An older male dog of an unknown breed, with a brown coat, standing up and watching passing pedestrians and cars from the tiled pavement, outside a soon to open new cafe in West Perth, Western Australia. The dogs’ leash is attached to a cafe table, whilst next to the dog is a large and fluffy grey coloured dog bed. Faux limestone walls and red door frames make up the building behind the dog.A slightly closer photo of older male dog of an unknown breed, with a brown coat, sitting down in its fluffy grey dog bed, outside a soon to open new cafe in West Perth, Western Australia. RE: mastodon.social/@mattsheffield/1168… The Register, as always the king of IT snark…
Screenshot of text from The Register article about the revival of a 28yr old legal dispute related to IBM’s contributions of code to Linux, saying “The matter continues and appears likely to do so until either the heat death of the universe or the year of Linux on the desktop - whichever comes sooner.”

Sunset photo from my city office tonight.

Got to pat some cute supermarket doggos while waiting for something at the Bakery. #DogsOfMastodon
An unknown predominately white coated dog breed, waiting patiently for their owner outside a Supermarket in the north of Perth WA, staring directly up at the photographer whilst their head is raised. In the background is brown brick paving, and the wooden crates used by the supermarket outside for displaying produce.
