Aidan Clarke @cranchyroll.com · 10hI've never found a copy out in the wild, but I've kept my eyes open for it. I know Lea Hernandez did coloring for the colored issues of Ranma 1/2 Viz put out, and I think Silent Möbius. The dialogue looks like her lettering, too. Could you show the credits page? 120

Aidan Clarke @cranchyroll.com · 12hLike, it's one of my favorite Beatles songs to begin with, and I always thought of the opening warm-up riffs as part of that. I heard the other versions, but didn't realize until I was adult that the false start was a cutting error. But it's in-time with the rest of the song. It's so good. 030
Aidan Clarke @cranchyroll.com · 12hThe super deluxe version of Rubber Soul is out now, reminding me of how the MP3s my dad gave me as a kid were the US stereo version of the album which has the false start at the beginning of I'm Looking Through You. Aidan Clarke @cranchyroll.com · 28/09/2026Pretty sure that's the old Director's Cut. Manhunter has a similar history with the recent Final Cut coming decades after the Dorector's cut, but even outside of those big names cuts, Mann still tinkered in minor ways on various releases without fully saying so. Heat too. 100
Aidan Clarke @cranchyroll.com · 28/09/2026Curious about the new cut. The theatrical and Director's both have notable strengths and weaknesses. To the point that the "Miami Nice" fan edit has been a great mesh. Hoping that the Final Cut is along the lines of that one. Not anywhere near my favorite Mann, but still good and intriguing. 100

Aidan Clarke @cranchyroll.com · 25/09/2026Two dots can work, but it usually causes that line to get off-kilter. Three gradient is part of the bitmap data, but there are many cases where stuff like the plants and spped lines in those panels cover up much of the tone. There were maybe ten lines under the left sfx with no clean dots to sample. 110
Aidan Clarke @cranchyroll.com · 25/09/2026Her overall number of letting projects isn't huge, but she's one of the absolute best. Blade of the Immortal has unbelievable sound effects. Domu is incredible. 110

Reposted by Aidan ClarkeAidan Clarke @cranchyroll.com · 24/09/2026The Delinquent and the Transfer Student volume 2 is out now! I adore this series, and lettering it was a huge challenge. I'm incredibly proud of the results, and wake to display some comparisons of the Japanese and English lettering. Here are some, with more in the thread below! 6269105
Aidan Clarke @cranchyroll.com · 25/09/2026I try. On this page, there were no clean samples of the gradient under either sound effect. The one on the right had at least two dots visible per row, so I got a pretty rough but complete samepke built up. The one on the left had nothing usable for 10 rows so I had to approximate in some areas. 131
Aidan Clarke @cranchyroll.com · 25/09/2026I think the presence of a gradient screen tone without a clean area to sample is biggest factor. That happens in both. I enjoy retouching stuff drawn on paper more since it gives more room to make stuff irregular or imperfect. Digitally drawn titles have more precise elements. 110
Aidan Clarke @cranchyroll.com · 24/09/2026D&TS is drawn digitally, with sfx placed over completed art. The lines under SFX are contiguous. Billy Bat is drawn on paper, with sfx usually inked first. The lines that go into them may not line up with those on the other side, so it's good to make the English sound effect cover the same seams. 000
Aidan Clarke @cranchyroll.com · 24/09/2026I usually start my whiting out the Japanese text so I can see clearly what needs to be done. If feasible, I like to retouch without the English sound effect or text in place since that gives me full visibility. If it's hard retouch, I'll do some easy aspects, then EN text, and then wrap up retouch. 210
Aidan Clarke @cranchyroll.com · 24/09/2026On nearly every manga project I've lettered, the dialogue itself is the easiest part. That comes with a lot of practice and accumulated knowledge, but it's still usually a few days per book. The sound effects and retouch typically account for 80% of the time spent on a book. 140
Aidan Clarke @cranchyroll.com · 24/09/2026Always the sound effects. I think volume 1 might have been a little harder on its own merits since it had a few more instances of very tricky retouch and effects that were difficult to mimic, but volume 2 overlapped with some other books in my schedule which made finishing it comparatively harder. 140
Aidan Clarke @cranchyroll.com · 24/09/2026In comparison, I letter a Korean comic where I'm tasked with making the speech bubbles myself. There's a big emphasis on making the tails point to the speaker's head in that project, especially since transitioning from vertical scroll arrangement to print introduces some reading order ambiguity. 010
Aidan Clarke @cranchyroll.com · 24/09/2026Oh yeah, I hadn't even thought of it like that! I initially used the original bubble and split it into "Mega-fan?" on two lines. The editor suggested making the bubble horizontal. By virtue of that, the tail ended up pointing to her head more clearly. Not first consideration here, but active. 110

Aidan Clarke @cranchyroll.com · 24/09/2026The series is full of asides, and I wrote them all by hand. It takes a long time, but I felt that Fujichika-sensei put so much love into that hand-drawn look that I needed to as well. This is volume 2 of 3, and it's such a delight. I hope you check it out! 3294
Aidan Clarke @cranchyroll.com · 24/09/2026And here are some other pages with fun stuff. I could reuse most of the "welcome to", but had to capitalize the W and move "to" over. I'm particularly fond of how the "OMAKE" text turned out. 1212
Aidan Clarke @cranchyroll.com · 24/09/2026The standout difficult pages in volume 2 were these festival shots with singing. Lots of retouch to be safe. The English text has more characters and needs to read horiziontally. The music notes were left in place, so text had to go around them. I drew guides and then traced in the original style. 1243
Aidan Clarke @cranchyroll.com · 24/09/2026Layering of text into the image is so much fun. Same with doing block letters that overlap with each other. And when we need to use more characters in English, there's a bit of a puzzle for how to situate each character. Gotta keep the overall balance the same and fit in the margins. 1303
Aidan Clarke @cranchyroll.com · 24/09/2026Fujichika-sensei drew tons of great signage and packaging in this series, none of it looking too uniform. It was a lot of fun trying to replicate that style and figure out how to arrange the text. 1303
