Captain Carrot @cptncarrot.bsky.social · 07/07/2026I don't think so. No one was ever going to give Ukraine enough cruise missiles for them to launch a strategic bombing campaign into Russia. 190
Captain Carrot @cptncarrot.bsky.social · 26/06/2026And I'm saying you're wrong. In most scenarios, if you have at least 2 exterior walls, installing a mini-split would be pretty easy. Not as trivial as the average American house, but not hard. Yeah, it will never be as clean as a house built with a/c in mind, but it beats letting elders die of heat. 010
Captain Carrot @cptncarrot.bsky.social · 25/06/2026If the head unit has to be mounted on a shared wall instead of an exterior wall, you would need a different approach. You might run the lines along the ceiling until you hit an exterior wall. For aesthetics, cover them with crown moulding or something. Where there's a will, there's a way. 110
Captain Carrot @cptncarrot.bsky.social · 25/06/2026In your photo, for example, you could perhaps install a floor mounted model against the wooden wall, and punch through to the exterior below the window. Obviously I don't know the details of your house, but there is almost always a way. 000
Captain Carrot @cptncarrot.bsky.social · 25/06/2026Start from a patch of free space on your exterior wall, ground, or roof where you'd hang the condenser, then work backwards from there. The interior fan units can be wall, ceiling, or floor mounted. The two halves can be 10+m apart; the combinations are almost infinite. 110
Captain Carrot @cptncarrot.bsky.social · 24/06/2026The refrigerant lines are like 10mm or smaller. You'd drill through the brick and run them outside. The condenser would be hung on the rear exterior, or on the ground. There would probably be some limits on where inside that it is practical to mount the cooling head. 150

Captain Carrot @cptncarrot.bsky.social · 23/10/2025Snowmelt systems do have a place. Keeping a hospital sidewalk continuously free of ice is a great use case where the safety benefit justifies the energy cost. But a residential driveway in Wisconsin is going to be a luxury item 99.9% of the time. 110
Captain Carrot @cptncarrot.bsky.social · 23/10/2025I've never considered the need to dry my driveway, and I don't have any driveway drains to keep clear. I didn't know how much energy is typically used for those purposes, but I don't imagine it will make up the difference for most people. 100
Captain Carrot @cptncarrot.bsky.social · 23/10/2025Your original comment was that you're "spending the energy either way," which implies to me that the energy use will be comparible. But in fact, the energy required to clear a driveway mechanically will be much less than through heating, except in the lightest possible snow conditions. 110
Captain Carrot @cptncarrot.bsky.social · 23/10/2025What? A snow blower is self-propelled, the gasoline both moves the machine and moves the snow. And I have no idea what you're talking about needing to keep drains flowing for a snow blower. The snow is still frozen afterwards, it's just in a different place. 110
Captain Carrot @cptncarrot.bsky.social · 23/10/2025My napkin math was only counting the BTUs to turn 125 pounds of 32F ice into 125 pounds of 32F water. The rate of snowfall didn't factor in. In practice, spreading it out over time will take more energy because more energy will be lost to the surroundings. 120
Captain Carrot @cptncarrot.bsky.social · 23/10/2025Some napkin math tells me that you might be able to melt an inch of the lightest, fluffiest snow from 500ft² for less energy than it takes to run a 5hp snow blower for 30 minutes. But only if the snowmelt system puts 100% of its heat into melting snow. So it's only more efficient for tiny snowfalls. 120
Captain Carrot @cptncarrot.bsky.social · 23/10/2025It's going to take way less energy to move snow, rather than melting it. 140
