So, from what I can tell, people are more upset about an Oregon politician speaking in her native tongue in front of a flag that's been put on its poll upside down than they are about the President of the USA bragging about sexual assault, using racist language & betraying our allies?

Public Consultation is personally affecting my mental health and making me feel unsafe at my job

As the title says, I get that public consultation is part of the job. But I used to get excited to go out to the public with new plans and talking to people who are excited about city building. But now I dread it. A little bit of tension is ok, and I used to find people pretty reasonable, but in my last few session, I encountered: verbally abusive people (literally, inches away from my face screaming and berating me), people who put their hands on members of my team (poking her in the chest to make a point), and racist and homophobic slurs written on comment cards (I'm a POC for what it's worth). I'm a 5'3" 130lb female who is a visible minority, and I'm tired of feeling like I need an entourage of white male coworkers just to do my job.

I get a surge of anxiety when I'm assigned to a project with public consultation scope, only to breath a sigh of relief when I find out the client wants virtual only. I've been "lucky" in that most of my projects are the fun ones where the proposal is generally something that the public usually likes or is neutral on.

I'm sure this has been posted several times in the past, but the stress is reaching a new high. Not sure what I'm looking for here - maybe just solidarity, some stories of your own experience with this, perhaps someone here has felt the same way and decided to change career paths? Thanks for reading if you got this far.

Meta's Muse AI agent harvests personal, financial, and professional data from people who have never installed or given their consent. Most people don't realise so I've decided to write more about it.… | Paul Walsh | 68 comments
Meta's Muse AI agent harvests personal, financial, and professional data from people who have never installed or given their consent. Most people don't realise so I've decided to write more about it. Avoiding Muse doesn't stop Meta from collecting your data. When someone you know grants Muse system-level access to their email accounts, contact lists, calendars, and private messaging history, Meta processes and indexes every interaction involving you. Meta receives, analyses, and stores your private communications without your knowledge, consent, or notification. This secondary data harvesting places non-consenting individuals inside Meta's commercial profiling system. Because Meta stores this indexed information on central servers, your private communications and personal network details become accessible through government disclosure orders and law enforcement requests. A single contact surrendering their account permissions compromises the privacy and digital security of their entire personal and professional network. Muse is probably one of the most toxic products to come out of the tech industry in 30 years. Meta's software analyses conversations, identifies relationships and builds detailed profiles, including people who've never installed Muse. And it’s updated automatically every hour. You can’t consent on behalf of another adult. One person installing Muse gives Meta access to private information about their family, friends, colleagues and clients without any of those people agreeing to it. That information includes personal relationships, health, finances, private conversations, professional activities and behavioural patterns. My first technical investigation exposed Muse's permissions, surveillance capabilities and security failures. My next piece focuses on consent, detailing the specific data categories Muse accesses and the mechanisms it uses to index unlinked third-party records. I'm working on an investigation into how Ireland's financial dependence on US tech companies influences government policy, accelerates AI data centre expansion, and threatens EU privacy regulation for the entire world. I'll publish that in the next few hours. Some of the comments on my previous Muse investigation convinced me that another article is necessary. Im posting this now to give readers advance notice and a chance to comment or engage, increasing the likelihood that LinkedIn will show them my next investigation when I publish it. My advice is to encourage everyone you know to delete Muse if theyre already using it and avoid it like the plague if they haven't. My Substack is free. Create an account and follow my profile to receive notifications whenever I publish a new technical investigation. Don't just subscribe as I don't send many emails. A voluntourism company isn't happy with me. You have to wonder about a company that is more focused on getting negative comments taken down than addressing the experiences expressed in such. coyotecommunications.com/coyoteblog…
coyotecommunications.com
A caution regarding IVHQ – in their own words.
Anyone who has read about me online for more than 10 minutes knows I’m not a big fan of voluntourism travel agencies. I know that it’s been largely colored by my background working in international and local aid and development, as well as my expertise in volunteer and community engagement. I’ve been open about why I’m not a fan of most voluntoursim, so I won’t repeat those reasons why here in this blog, but I’ve tagged all my many blogs on the subject here. And you’ll note as you read through these that I started off, decades ago, staunchly opposed to _all_ voluntourism, and then, through outreach from ethical organizations with a very different focus than the voluntourism travel agencies, as well as volunteers who had participated in such, I gardually changed my mind about voluntourism being _always_ wrong – and even ended up participating in a pay-to-volunteer-internationally program myself. But one of those voluntourism travel agencies is REALLY angry with me. It’s called IVHQ. And this company is now threatening me because I have offered cautions in comments about the company on Reddit: I’ve told people that there are some very disturbing negative comments out there and they need to read them, and I’ve noted that a massive number of online reviews aren’t always an indication that a company is doing well, that it’s very easy to manufacture such reviews by AI and other means. All true statements. All sincere cautions. I wish I could refer to them all, but IVHQ has pressured many Reddit moderators to take down any negative references to IVHQ. IVHQ, rather than address concerns, is bent on removing any negative comments about the company. Knowing that, and reading this email below, please think very, very carefully before booking your feel-good-look-I’m-volunteering-abroad! trip with IVHQ. You have to really wonder about a travel agency that is so threatened by an independent nonprofit consultant that they would resort to writing an email filled with inaccurate, misleading statements and threats: – _——- Original Message ——– Subject: Re: IVHQ Date: 2026-10-13 19:50 From: Sam Morrah sam@hqtravelgroup.org_ _Dear Jayne,_ _This is a formal notice that you must immediately cease publishing false statements regarding International Volunteer HQ (IVHQ)._ _For several years, you have repeatedly posted negative claims about IVHQ in online discussions, most recently on Reddit, asserting that:_ * _IVHQ is a scam._ * _IVHQ’s reviews are fake._ * _There are many complaints about IVHQ._ _These statements are entirely false and unsubstantiated:_ * _IVHQ is a legitimate organization: More than 160,000 volunteers have traveled with IVHQ since 2007. Based on verified volunteer reviews, Go Overseas has named IVHQ its Top Volunteer Abroad Provider for six consecutive years._ * _Reviews are authentic: IVHQ does not write, purchase, or fabricate reviews. Every review is submitted by a verified participant._ * _Claims are unverified: When asked to provide evidence of the complaints you cited, you declined to do so. Furthermore, you confirmed via email that you have never volunteered with IVHQ, and you did not contact us regarding any concerns prior to publishing these claims._ _Due to your conduct, Reddit moderators have already removed most of your comments regarding IVHQ and banned you from communities including r/volunteer and r/premed. Your statements mislead prospective volunteers and harm the local partner organizations that rely on these programs._ _We require that you immediately:_ 1. _Cease stating or implying that IVHQ is a scam, uses fake reviews, or is subject to widespread complaints._ 2. _Refrain from making any further false claims about IVHQ online._ 3. _Remove all existing false statements you have posted online._ _Please reply to this email to confirm your compliance._ _We are actively monitoring online platforms. If this behavior continues, we will report all new posts as false information and harassment, submitting this notice and prior correspondence as evidence. HQ Travel Group and IVHQ reserve all legal rights and remedies._ _Regards,_ _Sam Morrah_ _Sam Morrah Chief Executive Officer HQ Travel Group_ _E:sam@hqtravelgroup.org W: www.hqtravelgroup.org [1]_ _HQ Travel Group is home to two market-leading brands that facilitate life-transforming travel experiences in over 60 countries for customers living in more than 100 nations worldwide._ At least some of my comments about IVHQ, as well as some of the negative reviews I’ve referred to regarding IVHQ, can still be found online. I wish they all where still there but, as I said, IVHQ has, as it admits, pressured (I would call it bullied) moderators into taking the negative reviews and comments down. Again, you have to wonder about a company that is more focused on getting negative reviews, and references to such, taken down rather than addressing concerns. A big thank you to colleagues who are also out there trying to ensure quality in international volunteering and fight against unethical voluntourism. Let’s keep up the pressure and not let people bully us into silence. And if your voluntourism agency wants to be one of the “good guys”, I’d be happy to work with you to help you refine your program so it’s focused on local people as much as its focused on giving volunteers their Instagramable experience. I have very reasonable rates. ### Share this: * Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window) Email * Share on Facebook (Opens in new window) Facebook * Share on X (Opens in new window) X * Share on Tumblr (Opens in new window) Tumblr * Share on Reddit (Opens in new window) Reddit * Share on Mastodon (Opens in new window) Mastodon * Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window) LinkedIn *

Facebook is becoming more and more useless as an outreach tool, and as a tool to stay in touch with the nonprofits and causes you care about most. Especially if you use the page interface: it's a sea of accounts you do NOT follow. Nonprofits, you need to NOT rely on it entirely for marketing.
