thinking a lot about my best friend lately. he died a couple of years ago. i know i did this with him, he had a unique voice and way with words and it rubbed off on me a lot. and i did on him. funny thing is, i don't remember how? it feels like he just became part of me and i think that's beautiful.

if there's one thing i think i learned doing my masters in polcomm, it's that think tanks are almost all morally bankrupt, comically evil, mysteriously bankrolled and suspiciously influential. any politician who meets with a think tank should have to spend 24 hours in stocks.

it's the same as the trans rights stories and a lot of the stuff about immigration. it's an effort to appeal to the loudest and cruellest members of society at the expense of everyone else precisely because they are loud and cruel and also probably more likely to click on google ads.

major news sites are over-reporting on this as a sort of overcorrection on the fragmentation of culture. a guy was shot and killed in america, something that happens over 100 times a day. he's sort of famous, sure, but not enough to warrant live reporting on the bbc homepage.

so you have these surreal articles where either his actions are listed and the reader sees this misalignment between the questions being asked and what the guy did and gets confused. or they're not listed and the writer bloviates on stuff that's not actually happening.

so like. editors across the country are trying to handwring about how maybe deadnaming isn't violence or whatever but the case they're using to frame it isn't really anything to do with that. and if you reference anything that's actually happening, it makes that dissonance very obvious.

he is a toxic asset. smart people in his movement do not associate with him in public. he called the nhs nazi scientists, harasses random women, smashed a teenagers phone after verbally abusing her. he's a complete weapon and a liability. if you read into the case, this becomes obvious.

I need to fix my brain, become more confident. So my best idea is to do like I did when I was a stupid twink. I need to fake it. I need to be open to new experiences and actually do stuff. I need to be willing to talk to people, make friends. I need to stop hiding and express myself how I want to.

In a way, I think I've gone back to how I used to be. The real me has become the government me and I feel like I've lost my identity. I use anxiety as a shield and maybe I had to once upon a time. Community wasn't like it was now. I spent so long alone. But I'm not alone now. Why act like it?

I felt confident in myself for a while. I could see a way out of my miserable life and into something new. I quit my job and moved cities and suddenly I was just me. It was scary. I had to make myself hard to deal with it. I became a chameleon and would just kind of be what I needed to be.
