Devastated to hear about the passing of Dr. Karen Pearlston, who I was incredibly lucky to call both a friend in real life and a mentor in academia. 1/7

Attendance incentives don’t solve disengagement. They just measure it. We see that in university undergrad classrooms. Not sure why Doug Ford’s government thinks high schools will be different.

Ive been searching for any sort of employment, to work alongside completing my PhD (bc the cost of living is impossible). After 2 years of searching & over 400 applications sent out, I finally got offered a gig that will end in August with no possibility of renewal. This is what hell looks like.

This is so real.
The reason the Canadian government and Hockey Canada are so keen to embrace Heated Rivalry is that it’s the best PR campaign the federally-funded governing body has received since they used children’s registration fees to pay for a sexual assault settlements. Only 4 years ago.

Um…bit bold to call the story I broke on Tuesday a “Star analysis” with zero credit to me! This is such a bummer. I worked really hard on this one.
A list of Canadian companies profiting off of
ICE and Trump's violent mass deportation regime
Several Canadian companies appear to be pocketing profits as this horrific agenda rolls out.
RACHEL GILMOREThomson Reuters
What? Headquartered in Toronto, the technology and media giant has three active contracts with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. One, awarded in 2021, covers a "law enforcement investigative
database subscription. Another, awarded in 2023, is for "risk mitigation services." A third, awarded in 2025, is for a "maritime analysis tool" and "subject matter expert support services to the support the homeland security investigations, operation national initiative for illicit trade enforcement program."
How much? The 2021 contract is worth
US$22.8 million. The 2023 contract has seen Thomson Reuters awarded US$2.7 million to date, and has a potential award amount of US$4.6 million. The 2025 contract has so far garnered the media giant US$1.8 million, with a potential award amount of $3.6 million.
Together, the three contracts are worth a potential US$31 million.

The company that owns Thomson Reuters also owns the Globe and Mail. Reminding you once again that Reuters has US$31 million in contracts with ICE.

We are witnessing genocide in real time and watching ICE terrorize communities across the U.S., all captured in HD by countless bystanders. And yet we’re still told that police body-worn cameras will somehow ensure “accountability.” The evidence has never been missing. The will to act has.

The bar is so low that “progressives” have become impressed of a speech from a white, neoliberal, rich, bloke politician. As Contra Tenore pointed out, it was a speech a technocratic banker from the 90s would give. It was an economists view of international relations.

Meanwhile, our faculty is being nickel-and-dimed into removing TA assistance from already too-large classes even as we are harangued about retention, and the university is sitting on massive cash reserves that they say they can’t spend even as they redirect operating $ to “strategic” slush funds.

Locking people up for being poor, sick, or in crisis doesn’t solve the problem and in fact makes it worse. When people are detained instead of supported, they often lose housing, jobs, and vital connections. That instability drives desperation, which fuels crime and social harm. (1/6)

Pierre Poilievre says Canada’s top politicians all need protection. Meanwhile, Charlie Kirk had six private security guards when he was shot in the neck — a spot no bulletproof vest could cover. Maybe the issue isn’t a lack of bodyguards, but a lack of critical thinking.

In harm work, there’s no such thing as a “perfect victim.” People have histories, contradictions, coping strategies that don’t always make sense from the outside. Support and care can’t be conditional on someone fitting an impossible standard. Harm is harm.
