Reminder that despite all the years, Mame is still not perfectly emulating a lot of things, including "simple" games like that. And they're very aware of the fact, since Balloon Bomber is marked "imperfect". But all the retro emulation boxes disable these warnings so most people don't realize it.

Scrolled all the way back to thank you for this post. I bought it a while ago, never launched it, then someone described it in a way that made me feel it wouldn't be for me (I was looking for reasons to purge my backlog). Then I saw this, gave it a chance, and I'm enjoying it so far!

Same - I didn't play the series until the GBA with Zero and Fusion, and I really enjoyed the sneaking part of Zero. It's flawed but I like it anyway.

Mmhh can it be considered as a music attempt given the limited technology of the era? Not sure what the devs say about that. And there are varying notes so I guess it depends on your definition of music ^^

In any case it's a real early "there's music playing during stages gameplay" game. I wonder if there are any earlier example.

I respect a game that's made to strongly appeal to somebody far more than one bland enough to try to appeal to everybody. Gamers also have a bad tendency to judge sequels by outsized expectations instead of on their own merits. A sequel that zigs when some want it to zag can still be a lotta fun!

There have been two occasions in my career where I had to go to war with teammates against mistaken understandings of probability. In both cases, it was because people expected large numbers of d6s to occasionally result in maximum damage. But the curves for 3d6 and 15d6 (e.g.) look like this:

They did a Microsoft: a small(ish) team working on the side and got successful, then got noticed by corporate and fell victim of managers greed and politics. It's sad but it was pretty inevitable.
