If nothing else AI is making clear that there are people all around us for whom writing, art, and music are not communion with another mind, but just - wallpaper. Just pleasant things to look at. They think AI is conscious because they have no actual grasp of what it is to encounter another mind.

Published my first essay in months. I'm particularly proud of the writing – it's some of my nicest. It's also about depression and some of the bleakest things I feel. But, also!, it has some laughs in there. And it's about the things that help me navigate, understand and tend to that bleakness.

A post for no one but me: tweaking Sombra’s abilities in Overwatch to make her a support character. www.wavebeam.love/2026/08/28/r...

20. Pages, mostly. Then some kind of spark of creative joy, nice turns of phrase, something that makes me see the world in a more deft way. Or a plot that just rips.

19. I don't reaaaaally follow the "[x] and [y] books are popular" chats (not as a judgmental "look how cool i am, la de da" thing – I just don't pay attention). Buuuuut I think both the attention given to books like "Atomic Habits" and the "those books aren't good, actually" discourse is dull.

18. I like books, regardless of their time period. "Middlemarch" is one of the most impressive books I've ever read and it's from the 1870s so... then?

16. Looks like I've read 28 books so far this year.

15. Annihilation by Jeff VanderMeer is a quick, evocative novel that'll get under your skin. If you want more, the whole Southern Reach series is worth your time (but books 2–4 are quite different than Annihilation).

11. Non-fiction is my jam. The historian Tony Judt is one of my fave all-time writers. I wouldn't have made it this far (in a v. literally sense) if it weren't for the many, many Buddhist writers who helped me make sense of myself and the world.

10. I don't believe in guilty pleasures. If you like something, you like something. Relish the joy you find in everything.

6. No Time to Spare, Malafrena, City of Illusions by Ursula Le Guin. The Odyssey, translated by Emily Wilson. Beowulf, translated by Maria Dahvana Headley. Katabasis by R. F. Kuang. (I had 2 weeks off work.)

5. Paperback Books in the Melbourne CBD is my absolute fave bookstore. Fully Booked in Thornbury is my local second-hand bookstore. I use Anna's Archive to track down obscure titles I can't find elsewhere.

4. Poetry, philosophy, spirituality, art, sci-fi and fantasy (as I'm collecting Le Guin's books atm).

110

cory zanoni @coryzanoni.com · 12/08/2026

3. I compulsively buy philosophy books, art books and the works of Ursula Le Guin so... those genres?

2. OOF. idk? I'm a real "my fave book is the last one I read" kinda guy. Buuuut let's take a punt: - The Other Wind by Ursula K Le Guin - The Memory Chalet by Tony Judt - Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson - One of the Cromwell trilogy by Hilary Mantel - One of Thich Nhat Hanh's books

1. I don't thiiiiiink I've really re-read many books? I read Just Plain Cat by Nancy Robinson over and over again as a kid, though.

We can also add a bonus for every year of service with a team after ~8 years. Players get a bonus 1% of the cap per year, to a max of like 8%. This gets wiped if a player is traded or leaves the team. That rewards players for sticking with teams long term, even if they weren't drafted by them.

000

cory zanoni @coryzanoni.com · 08/07/2026

Basically creates a situation where max contracts are roughly equivalent to now (if you're regularly hitting All Star + All NBA status) while allowing bigger paydays for ppl who go beyond that while also not hitting teams long-term for one year spikes in production.

200

cory zanoni @coryzanoni.com · 08/07/2026

- MVP: +5% (of the cap) - FMVP: +5% - DPOY: +3% - All NBA 1st: +2.5% - All NBA 2nd: +2% - All NBA 3rd: +1.5% - All Star: +1.2% So: last season, SGA would've gotten a extra 13.7% of the cap for a year for MPV, FMVP, All NBA 1st team and All Star honours (on top of his regular contract).

100

cory zanoni @coryzanoni.com · 08/07/2026

Had a silly idea for max contracts while dozing in bed this morning. We lower the base % for the max to like 28% of the cap or whatever but stack one year bonuses (paid outside of the cap) for certain achievements. #NBAsky

A CMO legit sent me a recent podcast interview featuring two agency ppl talking about the "surprising benefits" of branded content, as if it's a new thing in 2026. Just same ol' "storytelling helps build relationships with your customers". The grift never changes, it just finds a new/old hat.

It rules. eBay is the way to go, in my experience – good range, quick shipping, reasonable prices. I buy local whenever I can but the markup on physical media can be brutal.
