Biochemist Dr. Florence Seibert developed the Purified Protein Derivative in the 1930s that standardized tuberculosis testing worldwide by 1952. Before her work, TB skin tests were inconsistent/unreliable.It remains the basis for the TB skin test used today. Born #OTD in 1897. #WomenInSTEM
A vintage black-and-white studio portrait features biochemist Dr. Florence Seibert (1900–1991), famed for developing the Purified Protein Derivative (PPD) that standardized tuberculosis testing worldwide. Captured from the chest up, she poses in a three-quarter turn while looking directly at the camera with a subtle, intelligent smile, establishing a serene, professional, and historically significant mood. Her dark hair is styled in a classic 1920s short bob featuring prominent finger waves framing her forehead. She wears delicate, rimless spectacles and a light-colored blouse designed with a prominent collar and soft ruffled detailing along the edges. The composition employs soft-focus lighting typical of early 20th-century photography, casting gentle highlights across her face against a smooth, dark, non-descript studio backdrop. In the bottom right corner, a faint, embossed photographer's stamp adds an authentic period touch to this archival image celebrating a foundational figure in medicine.

Dr. Wangari Maathai (d. #OTD 2011): 1st African woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize, 2004. She broke the traditional definitions of peacebuilding & demonstrated that environmental sustainability, democratic governance & local resource equity are the bedrock of a conflict-free society. #WomenInSTEM
A full-length photograph of Dr. Wangari Maathai (1940–2011), the renowned Kenyan environmentalist and first African woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize. She stands outdoors, smiling warmly at the camera with her hands gently supporting the stem of a young green sapling growing from the soil, symbolizing her foundational work with the Green Belt Movement. Dr. Maathai is dressed in vibrant traditional African attire, featuring a matching brown and black patterned top and a dynamic patterned skirt block-printed with white, black, and brown geometric motifs. A matching fabric headwrap is beautifully gathered atop her head. She wears a watch on her left wrist. The composition places her centrally within a lush, natural environment filled with green foliage, leafy bushes, and ferns against a soft-focus backdrop of a stone wall. The overarching mood is joyful, inspiring, and hopeful, visually encapsulating her lifetime commitment to community-led conservation, grassroots democracy, and women's rights.

The extraordinary 3,000 year-old ‘Berlin Gold Hat’! One of four known cone-shaped golden ‘hats’ from ancient Europe. Sheet gold decorated with bands of solar and lunar motifs, which may represent calendars according to latest research. Neues Museum, Berlin 📷 by me #Archaeology
My photo shows a very tall, slender, conical gold object known as the Berlin Gold Hat, displayed against a dark museum background. At the top end, the tall slender cone narrows to a pointy tip.
At the bottom it widens into a rounded base with a broad flat brim. It is made of very thin hammered sheet gold, the entire surface of which is embossed with horizontal bands of decoration. Repeated motifs of concentric circles, disks, ovals, and other symbols, are thought to represent the sun and moon. According to latest research this may represent solar and lunar calendars. It is dated to the late Bronze Age, c. 1000-800 BC. It is 74 cm tall and weighs 480 gms. On display at Neues Museum, Berlin. It is one of only four known golden ‘hats’ from ancient Europe. Three from Germany and one from France.

#OTD in 1992, Dr. Mae Jemison launched into orbit as a mission specialist aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour making her the first Black woman to travel into space. An incredible life: + Physician (M.D., Cornell 1981) + Peace Corps Area Medical Officer in Sierra Leone & Liberia #WomenInSTEM 🧵
A classic NASA color portrait of Dr. Mae Carol Jemison, the first Black woman in space, captured in her official astronaut attire. She stands confidently in the center of the frame wearing a vibrant orange NASA flight suit with the American flag patch on her left shoulder, a blue-and-red NASA worm logo on her right, and a name tag reading “MAE JEMISON” above a mission patch. A large circular mission insignia for STS-47 (“Gibson APT Brown / Lee Davis Jemison Morgan”) is visible on her chest. She holds her white-and-black astronaut helmet with both hands in front of her torso, her short dark hair neatly styled, and offers a warm, radiant smile that conveys pride, determination, and joy. The background is a softly blended blue studio backdrop evoking the vastness of space. The composition blends technical precision with personal warmth, celebrating her historic 1992 flight aboard Space Shuttle Endeavour as Mission Specialist, where she conducted experiments in materials science and bone cell research. The image powerfully symbolizes her groundbreaking contributions to space exploration, diversity in STEM, and her lifelong commitment to making science accessible to all.A color portrait of Dr. Mae Carol Jemison, the first Black woman to travel into space and a pioneering engineer, physician, and advocate for science education. In this warm, studio-lit photograph from 2013, she appears as a confident woman with short, stylishly layered dark hair, smiling directly at the camera with a bright, engaging expression that radiates warmth, intelligence, and approachability. She wears a soft blue V-neck top, large silver hoop earrings, and a striking black cord necklace featuring a prominent circular turquoise pendant that rests at her collarbone. The background is a smooth, neutral gradient, keeping the focus entirely on her poised and professional presence. The overall composition is intimate and celebratory, conveying quiet strength and accomplishment while highlighting her enduring role as an inspirational figure in STEM and in women’s history.
