And - in a world where Peter Thiel has been lecturing people about the Antichrist - this is a hell of an anti-Palantir subtweet. Real Annie Hall-in-the-cinema-queue "I happen to have the Pope right here" vibes.
another section from the encyclical which reads: "213. The twentieth-century Catholic author J.R.R. Tolkien, in the words of a protagonist in one of his novels, described our responsibility in this way: “It is not our part to master all the tides of the world, but to do what is in us for the succour of those years wherein we are set, uprooting the evil in the fields that we know, so that those who live after may have clean earth to till.” [187] The civilization of love will not arise from a single or spectacular gesture, but from the sum total of small and steadfast acts of fidelity that serve as a bulwark against dehumanization. For this reason, it is worthwhile pausing to reflect on some aspects of how we, each in our own way, can cooperate in building the civilization of love. Without presuming to exhaust this theme, I would like to propose five paths toward daily and public responsibility: the need to disarm words, building peace through justice, adopting the perspective of victims, cultivating a healthy realism and reviving dialogue and multilateralism."

I realise this missive from His Holiness (especially given the launch optics w/Anthropic) has divided opinion, but there is some genuinely interesting / strong language in here. Here the Pope essentially calls out the dominant US big tech business model as colonial:
a paragraph from the papal encyclical. It reads "178. Even today, colonialism assumes new forms. It no longer dominates only bodies, but appropriates data, transforming personal lives into exploitable information. Entire regions, especially those marked by structural fragility and limited geopolitical relevance, are currently subjected to a new mindset of extraction: that of health data, epidemiological profiles, genetic maps and demographic information. These have become the new “rare earths” of power: vital data which, once aggregated and analyzed, can be used to train predictive models, guide investment strategies, anticipate crises and, above all, determine who and what is deemed to matter. Those who control the health data of entire peoples — often collected under the pretext of aid, research or innovation — possess a structural leverage over the future, for they can shape needs and markets. They can also decide, before others, to whom medicines, investments and protections will be allocated. Here lies one of the most urgent moral challenges of our time: to ensure that shared knowledge becomes a true common good rather than an instrument of dominance. This requires restoring to individuals not only the data that describes them, but also the ability to decide how it is used, by whom and for whose benefit. Otherwise, the digital age will not be post-colonial, but colonial in another form."

ICYMI! Dutch competition enforcers are piling in to help the 3x new DMA cloud investigations. This is *great* - with the EC team so short-staffed, they badly need reinforcements. I'd love to see @cmagovuk.bsky.social assist somehow, (despite Brexit/diff markets) given their own cloud study...
translation of a dutch competition authority LinkedIn post: "The Netherlands Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM) and the European Commission are joining forces!

The European Commission has launched three investigations into cloud services under the Digital Markets Act (DMA). We are participating in a joint investigation team: a form of collaboration between the European Commission and competition authorities that is possible under the DMA. This is the first time we have worked closely together in this way.

🔎 The investigations focus on addressing potential barriers for businesses and consumers in the cloud sector, such as switching barriers, lack of interoperability between cloud services, data access restrictions for business users, and bundling with other cloud providers' services. By removing these barriers for the largest cloud services, European companies will have more opportunities to enter the cloud sector and compete.

📄 The DMA imposes obligations on the largest digital platforms, the so-called gatekeepers. The goal: to protect businesses and consumers, offer more choice, and create growth opportunities for companies in digital markets. The European Commission can take action if gatekeepers violate the rules, for example, with fines.

➡️ Report potential violations by gatekeepers? Report them to us."Original Dutch linkedin announcement re the investigation support: "🤝🏽 De ACM en de Europese Commissie slaan de handen ineen!

‼️BIG: @teresaribera.ec.europa.eu and DGCOMP just did *part* of the right thing: - slap Google with 2.95bn fine (not enough but given bullying by Trump and Big Tech, not nothing) - critically, order Google to stop abusing its dominance. If not: - Breakups on table This is game on, not game over.

☠️Europe has got to wake up and do better. News and arts depend on advertising. This sector is worth *billions* to Europe's economy, and Google has drained the value from it for years. A fine can't prise open the market. To balk even at that? Speeches about sovereignty are fine words until we act.
A clip of an MLex article headlined "Google's adtech fine pulled at last minute over EU-US trade tensions" stating that a fine against Google was pulled "hours before the planned announcement" following opposition from Washington and EU trade commissioner.

This is silly hair-splitting by Microsoft re: its monopoly cloud kill switch. Imagine a country’s chief legal officer (a solicitor general, or for Brits James Eadie) is thrown off MS365. *Of course* this grinds that office’s work to a halt. It is why the sanction was slapped on - to block the ICC.

Smart piece. Agree that service outages get too little attention and don't spark much reflection. I'd just add market concentration - having so many critical UK infrastructures depend on US monopolies - is also a huge risk to UK resilience. See Crowdstrike (±£2.3bn UK cost), ICC shutdown...
