Goodbye Milwaukee. Snuck in a morning minimum run because who knows when Houston will feel this amazing. Also managed to see the former houses of my grandparents and an aunt/uncle - all lived within one block of each other. Hugely important space for my being. And I pushed the snake button.

The Milwaukee Public Museum is closing soon (moving) and this was my last chance to push the button. Supposedly the new museum will have a snake button but I needed just one more push. That one last one turned into about 18 last ones.

I had an absolutely perfect Milwaukee day. Started with the Milwaukee marathon that went way better than expected/hoped. Went to the Brewers game and watched them walk off the Padres. And finished it up with a bus ride to Kopp’s for some frozen custard. And tomorrow I’ll push the snake button.

I've been gone a little while. Summer (vacation) ended and I came back to Texas to discover BlueSky needed to verify my age. I didn't feel comfortable with their age check options, but I do feel comfortable sharing that I'm old enough to still have my physical copy of Baldur's Gate.

Our three daughters were making sand food at the beach for the family. Nobody had a choice and so everyone got sand bran muffins. But I got a donut. I feel loved. Bad news running: last 200 repeat felt a pop in my left hamstring. Single leg hopped to the finish line. No bruising or swelling so 🤞

In this 12 week training plan M and W are always 8k. I try to run a few hundred meters further than planned (except on speed days). 1. Remind myself there’s more in me. 2. In case race distance vs watch distance isn’t working in my favor. Daily practice of oh crap I’ve got to go more.

Yesterday was an all day on my feet family fun day followed by an 8k. Thought the coastal fog was moving in but it turned out to be a structure fire. Today was 4k at speed. Goal was 4:20 per km but hit the first at 4:08 and so I tried to stick it. Oldest daughter might try to surf tomorrow. 🥹

Today’s run started at sea level and because I wasn’t swimming I quickly went up. And then up some more. And as it turned out the up turned into UP. The first 3 km had 686 feet of gain with 465 feet occurring in the third kilometer. The scenery and just being kept me in gratitude.

Portland running. I saw more people outside running, cycling, or walking their dogs in one day than I’ve seen in Houston in the 15 years I’ve been back. The weather in Houston makes it quite understandable. (I don’t have gluten sensitivities so I kept running.)

Flew out to PDX today for an in-law family vacation. I initially had a middle seat but the prospect of a 4.5 hour flight stuck in the middle was not appealing. Inspired by @mountsthelens1980.bsky.social I paid for a north facing window seat so I would get this on descent. Worth every penny.

Running: Yesterday was supposed to be an 8k and today was supposed to be the 16k. I switched them around because today was canoe day. Canoeing: I am at peace in a canoe. Trying to keep things fun for the family so we take an annual short paddle on the Au Sable. A near perfect river.

Local radio spinning the hits. Was this stuck in my head for the whole 16k? You betcha. Best (smoothest) I’ve felt on an extended run in a long time. 64 F (18 C) as today’s high certainly helped. Didn’t look at the watch and ended up negative splitting each km over the last 13k.

I really like fruit cocktail (minus the cherries) mixed into Jello. Thank you Grandma for getting your grandkids to eat fruit. I also like mile repeats. Today was 3x1 mile (400 recovery). 6:51 (2:22) 6:44 (2:22) 6:39 (2:17) Tonight is fruit cocktail in strawberry Jello for a recovery boost.

Air quality for the last two days was ever so close to green. Recovery 6k on Sunday followed by an 8k today. With the cleaner air and cooler temperatures, Oakley joined along for today’s run. The benefit of a cooped up Oakley is that when we got out there she pulled me along the entire way.

Air quality vastly improved for the AlpenFest 10k. The out 5k (downhill) was comfortably fast. The and back 5k (up) was fast but not comfortable. 22:18 (down) 23:30 (up) Smoke forecast is not encouraging for tomorrow so I really tried to find gratitude being outside. Found it on the downhill.

Barely better than yesterday. Not going outside. Air quality is still “Stay indoors.” (Oakley is less than pleased.) The fun of the treadmill is that if you bump up the pace then you get done sooner. And so I bump and bump and bump until things just get silly.

Started Milwaukee Marathon training yesterday. (12 weeks) Incidentally my marathon training plan and 100 mile training plan are the same (last long run is different though). Today was 5x800 with 400 recovery. And since I didn’t take any pictures, here’s wonder dog Oakley catching a dog frisbee.

14 years ago some friends and I bicycled into the Gulf (of Mexico) having started at the Minnesota/Canada border 18 days earlier. We were retracing our pedals from 10 years earlier as we honored a good friend who died from an undiagnosed heart condition. A lot of emotions today. And gratitude.

Yesterday’s run: prairie time on the Ice Age Trail. 12 years ago I ran my first (and at the time swore first and only) 100 miler on a different section of the trail. Stopped at a bench and listened to some clay colored sparrows and field sparrows compete in song. Today’s run: pancakes!

Today’s run was a good reminder that pace and effort are not the same thing (they often feel the same in Houston running). Nice to be out on pedestrian/cycling paths even though I picked up some ticks. Also really nice to run in a place where drivers respect crosswalks. And I met the Philly fan.

Today’s recovery run was brought to you by the letter U and a healthy dose of immaturity. (In college and after, I was responsible for running nighttime public tours of our observatory. We got at least one U joke per tour and they very much got old. But I’m warming back up to them.)

Sub 1:40 half. But that was super tough. Put some money in the bank during the first 15k, but then some big withdrawals over the last 6k. 5k splits. 23:21 23:27 23:38 24:24 💣 and then barely held on over the last kilometer plus. Pleased to prove my watch wrong. Now it says I should go 1:37. 🙄

That was hard. I’m definitely a flat lander. Race had over half of the Houston marathon vertical. Still not a lot but I really struggle with anything other than ____ pancake. Positives. Hit my goal and negative split the 5ks. 23:07 to a 22:21. And everyone who finished ahead of me was younger.

The medal for finishing the Higgins Lake Sunrise Run is hanging on a bird feeder in the northern Michigan woods. The medal shows an artistic rendition of the lake along with a sun rising from behind the lake. The bird feeder has two orange halves attached to it and while it occasionally does attract a Baltimore Oriole or two, it mainly has brought in some beautiful Rose-breasted Grosbeaks. The photo also indicates that I ran 6.26 miles in 45:28 which works out to 7:16 per mile pace. First race at speed in 3.5 years.

Just signed up for a 10k that goes down tomorrow. Also had a half marathon option but I don’t think my body (or mind) is quite ready for that. Trying to keep things a bit shorter after the various 100s. Goal is 4:37 (km) pace but knowing myself I’ll push a bit harder than that if conditions allow.

Print media is not dead. Our oldest (7) delivered this morning’s newspaper. In addition to a comic and weather, the paper now has math problems. (I really want to know the answer to 7 raindrops + 3 lightning bolts.)

This weekend extended has been plane, trains, a bus, and two automobiles. 71 hours away from teaching of which: 14 hours of American Airlines nonsense. 1 hour of Chicago’s Blue Line. 28 hours of Amtrak. 4 hours of bus. And 24 hours in Kalamazoo celebrating super grandma’s 100 (and some sleep).

Took quite a few weeks of trouble shooting, rewiring, and all sorts of stuff, but the bucket microphone is back on the roof and finally working again.🤞 Here’s hoping for some good flyovers tonight.

On a side note, my body does not process gels or Gu or gummies or that sort of stuff while running. But I do have a secret sauce that helps reduce cramping and wakes me right up. Many thanks to Hebert’s (the Houston one though many thanks to the Broussard one, too) for providing my race nutrition.

Zion 100k finished. Beautiful. Primary goal: getting 8 lottery tickets for Western. ✅ Secondary goal: faster than year ago Bandera. ✅ (by over 90 minutes) Side goal: Not step on a cactus sans shoe during a bathroom emergency. ❌

1.11 miles on the course today. Just a tad more scenic than the Houston concrete jungle. (Bonus. Pinyon jay. Heard and seen. And as they say… lifer.) Tomorrow is show time.

The joy of “only” a 100k. Everything for the race and the trip fits into the designated personal item Spirit space. There was even enough room for the birding binoculars (though that’s for pre and post race). Two days until Zion. So thankful to be out running again.

Three weeks until the Zion 100k. Today was a take it easy 51k. I took it easy for 1 km and then walked 500 meters. And repeated that 34 times. First half took 3:12. Second half took 3:15. General soreness but nothing feels broken (looking at you Hennepin 100).

The sun is starting to set along a section of trail just outside of Huntsville State Park. This is a section created by a cycling group that links up to the trails in the park.

Switched shoes with 18 kilometers left in the run. The picture shows my feet in a pair of Brooks Caldera 6 with a pair of Merrell Longsky 2 waiting to be worn. The Merrell shoes are wonderfully light but the Brooks shoes are comfortably cushioned. Not sure what I’ll use at Zion.

500 miles is a real long drive in a car. We went off the direct route home because: Monument Valley. Made it to Four Corners with only five minutes to spare but were thankfully and nicely waved inside and told to hurry up. We hurried up. Today’s run was along the Animus River in Farmington, NM.

Eight hundred and thirteen mile car trip. (Or further.) Tempted to sneak out while everyone’s asleep and run down to the river and slow poke back up, but nope… kept the running simple. Also: this is not Houston elevation. Bonus joy: these are not Houston temperatures.

Grand Canyon road trip. I struggle with running in the morning but once I get running, it’s very much worth it. Today’s joy was 5 miles around Santa Rosa, New Mexico. Extra bonus: heard a lifer today. Chihuahuan Meadowlark.

Road tripping to the Grand Canyon. Today’s run was an easy (straightening the curves and flattening the hills) 6k in Littlefield, Texas. Post run horchata for me and ice cream for the girls.

March training calendar. Today was 5k short of a marathon in too darn hot weather. Wonder dog Oakley joined for a nice five mile run/walk stretch. Not sure if I’ll hold to the speed days. Did some silly speed stuff the last few weeks and hurt some muscles. Goal is 8 tickets for Western not Boston.

Math department party and we do a gift exchange. Gifts can get stolen twice before they’re frozen. First gift to get frozen (and before the coffee advent calendar)… @effinbirds.com (Department chair said she can’t have the calendar in her classroom. 10 commandments yes. Effin birds no.)

Last night I participated in my first chunder (beer mile) in over 15 years. I took part in the NA division - milk. Drink a pint, run a lap. x4. (A huge thank you to the lunch ladies for assisting with the milk cartons.) The public track at Memorial Park was amazing. First time there. Time 9:49.

Drink a beer, run a lap. Times four. No running/walking until your beverage is finished. And you’re disqualified if you throw up.

Taco Bell 50k today. That’s the most miserable I’ve ever been during a running event but at the same time - the most fun I’ve ever had while being miserable. The community was amazing. So many great people out there.
