Huge congratulations to Joanna Turner on the publication of her new book, Marie Corelli, in our Key Popular Women Writers Series!! 🎉 The book explodes the myths of prior biographies, revealing Corelli the performer, her working-class roots, and her hidden periodical publications of the 1870s.

We are very excited to share yet another addition to the Key Popular Women Writers Series: congratulations to Susan Civale on the publication of Mary Shelley! 🎉 This study reveals previously unseen continuities in Shelley's work and affinities with other women writers!

She definitely capitalised on the explosion in literacy and targeted her commercial works at a mass readership. I agree about Svengali - I was also really interested in the merchandise crazes that followed that novel - in comparison there were Corelli calendars and birthday books…

Couldn’t figure out where I recognized her name from and then I realised I picked up a book of hers from somewhere… now I’m intrigued to lean more! Sharing because I love this cover.

I have one of these! And the Barbara Cartland abridged A Romance from 1978. They’re a real window onto Corelli’s cultural afterlife, particularly when read with biographical work of that time!

Many thanks! The Sorrows is definitely a wild ride. I came across a passing reference to Corelli when researching Du Maurier’s Trilby about a decade ago and I’m still discovering pseudonymous works and new information about her. She is endlessly fascinating.

Thank you. I look forward to reading about Marie Corelli, who's long been a source of fascination for me. I didn't have much room for her in this book, but I did write a bit more here... thelionandunicorn.com/2017/12/16/i...

I enjoyed this very much! I used the Dickens passage you reference in my thesis - I often wonder about the influence of Dombey and Son on her characterisations in Boy.

Fascinating stuff, thank you! She’s certainly guilty of grammatical errors and the incorrect use of foreign languages, but you’re quite right to identify the nature of these attacks on her as sneering - she was a popular success, above all, and the establishment found it tricky to digest that!

No better way to celebrate the imminent publication of my very own book (a week today!) than showing off a personalised @gailmyerscough.co.uk print including my opening sentences! Cheers, Gail - I love it 😍
A Gail Myerscough print (green typewriter on black background) personalised with the first lines of my book ‘Marie Corelli’ - “It was nearly Christmas Eve in the quintessentially English town of Stratford-upon-Avon. The traditional sounding of the Guild Chapel curfew bell had occurred hours ago. It was almost midnight”.
