They came to Washington to dismantle government. Now, they’re profiting from it.
DOGE alumni have leveraged their government experience, raising at least half a billion dollars for firms spanning cyberwarfare, AI and data centers, a Post analysis found.

I see a scenario in which, for whatever reasons, data-center usage goes way below projections, the Government picks up the unused capacity, and uses it for surveillance. Anybody with me? www.wsj.com/politics/ele...

Don't know how seriously to take this. Consider where the idea came from. "Artificial" says it's something different from human intelligence. "Super" says it's like human itelligence and better. How can that distinction be exploited in the future?

They might be scary, but in my view there is a larger and more systemic danger: the damage already done to Government function by this coalition. That’s what you see post-1960 in the Dallas Fed graphic I cite above. 3/4

The discussion of the Presentation-Process pattern on page 2 of melconway.com/resume.pdf offers a framing of what is happening that you might consider. The broliarchs are latecomers to the half-century-old coalition described there. 2/4

Look at that graphic, follow the embedded links on page 2, and think about that other, global, impulse caused by the industrial revolution. You’ll see that things are happening for which we’re very poorly prepared. 6/6

Before ~1960 you see the effects of a gilded age, a terrible war, a depression, and another terrible war, and the correlation isn’t so obvious. After ~1960 the three variables track each other more closely. What’s going on after 1960? 2/6

Look at this graphic from the Dallas Fed. It plots three American societal metrics between 1913 and 2009: two measures of Congressional polarization, and a measure of income inequality. They seem correlated, but what is following what? www.dallasfed.org/~/media/docu... 1/6

OK, but the problem goes beyond language. Despite what some critics say, the things being built are creating outputs that are not predictable by the rules we are accustomed to. The people who are advocating "regulation" haven't the foggiest idea what effective regulation might look like.

My current research examines the underlying network structure, visible and invisible, that has developed since World War 2 in the American Conservative movement. I am using AI chatbots to collect public historical data. An index to these results is here: melconway.com/Home/Transcr...
The questions I asked my AI research assistants about the half-century-old American conservative movement are all here:
https://melconway.com/Home/Transcripts/QuestionsOnly.pdf
After each group of questions for which a single answer document exists, you will see a little bulleted line:
• Answers to above at
immediately followed by a link to the answer document. With only a few trivial exceptions in which I replaced the answer by a screenshot of the answer, the text of each answer is unedited; I copied/pasted it from the AI's web page to a Google doc, then to a Word doc, then saved as a pdf.

To everybody out there arguing about emergence: I have concluded that such argument reeks of category error. The word suggests action; there is no action. Nothing emerges. What we call emergence is a static relationship among a set of semantic categories. 1/2
