Spooky bird stories. My Halloween comic from 2024.
A comic titled Spooky Bird Stories. In panel 1, a turkey vulture is telling stories to other vultures, and it says, "She walked toward the source of the terrible smell. She got closer and closer, and then, to her horror, she saw... No dead body." A black vulture says "No!" and a turkey vulture says "Did someone already eat it??" In panel 2, a northern cardinal is telling a story to some songbirds. It says "They peered through the windows of the house at the gory scene. Zombies had smashed through the door in the night. The homeowner was dead. But worst of all... He hadn't refilled the feeders." An eastern bluebird says "Aaah!" and an American goldfinch says "It can't be!". In panel 3, A screech owl is telling a story to other owls. It says "And then the ghost fluffed itself up really big to appear scarier." A saw-whet owl gasps, and a long-eared owl says "Horrifying!". In panel 4, a downy woodpecker is telling a story to other woodpeckers, and says "The eerie sound rang through the dark woods. Tap-tap. Tap-tap. It was the distinctive two-part knock of the Ivory-billed Woodpecker. The species had returned from the dead... FOR REVENGE." A red-cockaded woodpecker says "Yesss".

I saw a northern short-tailed shrew in the woods. These creatures are fantastic! One of the few venomous mammals in the world. Uses echolocation to hunt. And eats its body weight daily. S/he was making a bunch of noise in the leaf litter and either completely unafraid (or completely unaware) of me.
Features velvety, slate-gray fur, a pointed snout, tiny eyes, and hidden ears. Their teeth are tipped with reddish-brown pigment. Measures 3 to 4.2 inches long from the head to the base of the tail, with a short tail measuring 0.6 to 1.2 inches. Weighs about 0.5 to 1 ounce.

They carry a neurotoxic venom in their saliva. Because they lack fangs, they must chew the venom into their prey using their sharp teeth to paralyze animals like mice, frogs, and insects.

They use a primitive form of echolocation to navigate underground tunnels and leaf litter.

They have an extremely rapid metabolism and must eat nearly their entire body weight in food every single day to survive. Paralyzed prey is sometimes stored alive in underground caches for later consumption.Features velvety, slate-gray fur, a pointed snout, tiny eyes, and hidden ears. Ageratina altissima (white snakeroot, richweed, white sanicle) #PoisonPlants #MilkSick
White snakeroot contains the toxin tremetol; when the plants are consumed by cattle, the meat and milk become contaminated with the toxin and that poison is passed on to humans who consume it. If taken in large enough quantities, it can cause tremetol poisoning in humans.

The poisoning is also called milk sickness, as humans often ingested the toxin by drinking the milk of cows that had eaten snakeroot. Although 80% of the plant's toxin, tremetone, decreases after being dried and stored away for 5 years, its toxic properties remain the same.

During the early 19th century, when large numbers of European Americans from the East, who were unfamiliar with snakeroot, began settling in the plant's habitat of the Midwest and Upper South, many thousands were killed by milk sickness.

Notably, milk sickness was possibly the cause of death in 1818 of Nancy Hanks Lincoln, mother of Abraham Lincoln. 🥛🐄🍼🌱

An album for the hours of 1 a.m. to 3 a.m. ♡
"I Could Live in Hope" helped pioneer the genre slowcore, which has been described as "stretch[ing] a simple melody into a 10-minute meditation that gently pulls [the listener] out of linear time."

A reaction to the abrasiveness of alternative rock in the early 1990s, when grunge had reigning popularity, Low "eschewed conventional songwriting in favour of mood and movement."

Influenced by Brian Eno and Joy Division, the band, collaborating with long-time producer and New York underground mainstay Kramer, favored slow-paced compositions characterized by minimal instrumentation and an economy of language.

Vishnu and Shiva, the primary bearers of the epithet Ishvara, seated on mounts with consorts Lakshmi and Parvati, accompanied by Ganesha.

Ishvara (Sanskrit: ईश्वर, romanised: Īśvara) is a concept in Hinduism, with a wide range of meanings that depend on the era and the school of Hinduism.

In ancient texts of Hindu philosophy, depending on the context, Ishvara can mean lord, ruler, king, husband, queen, soul or the Supreme Self (Paramatman).

In medieval-era Hindu texts, depending on the school of Hinduism, Ishvara means God, Supreme Being, personal God, or special Self.

In Shaivism, Ishvara is an epithet of Shiva. In Vaishnavism, it is synonymous with Vishnu, like in his epithet of Venkateswara.

In traditional Bhakti movements, Ishvara is one or more deities of an individual's preference (Iṣṭa-devatā) from Hinduism's polytheistic canon of deities.

In modern-day sectarian movements like Arya Samaj and Brahmoism, Ishvara takes the form of a monotheistic God. In the Yoga school of Hinduism, it is any "personal deity" or "spiritual inspiration."

In Advaita Vedanta, Ishvara is the manifested form of Brahman (Saguna brahman).

Gaillardia pulchella (Indian blanket, firewheel, girasol rojo)❤️‍🔥
Firewheel or Indian blanket is a popular annual growing 1-2+ ft. tall. The hairy stem is usually much-branched and becomes woody at the base late in the season. Branched stems, mostly leafy near the base, have showy flower heads with rays red at base, tipped with yellow, each with 3 teeth at broad end. The well-known flower heads are 1-2 in. across with a red center and a yellow outer band. Occasionally the three-cleft rays are solid orange or yellow. The disc flowers in the center are brownish red.

Frequent along roadsides in the Southwest, these wildflowers stand like hundreds of showy Fourth of July pinwheels at the top of slender stalks. Varieties are popular in cultivation, for they tolerate heat and dryness. Among several species in the Southwest, some flowers are entirely yellow.

The crane-fly orchid (Tipularia discolor) is a unique native terrestrial woodland orchid found across the eastern and southeastern United States. It features an inverted life cycle with winter foliage and summer blooms resembling flying insects.

Foliage: A single oval leaf emerges in autumn, stays green through the winter to catch sunlight on the bare forest floor, and withers by late spring before the plant blooms.

Leaf Appearance: Dull green on top, sometimes with dark purple spots, and a striking solid purple or crimson red underneath.

Flowers: Slender, leafless stalks grow 8 to 26 inches tall in mid-summer to fall, bearing 20 to 30 small, delicate purplish-green or brownish flowers with long nectar spurs.

Monotropa uniflora (American Indian ghost pipe plant often shortened to ghost plant, ghost pipe, American Indian pipe, or Indian pipe) is an herbaceous, parasitic, non-photosynthesizing, perennial flowering plant native to North America. #PrettyParasites
Unlike most plants, it is white and does not contain chlorophyll. Instead of generating food using the energy from sunlight, it is parasitic, and more specifically a mycoheterotroph. Its hosts are in the Russulaceae family. Most fungi are mycorrhizal, meaning that they grow symbiotically in association with tree roots. Through the fungal web of mycorrhizae, the M. uniflora roots ultimately sap food from where the host fungi are connected to the photosynthetic trees. The clustered node roots of this plant are covered in hairs called cystidium. The cystidia found on these roots allow easy attachment to fungi hyphae, such as can be seen in ectomycorrhiza. Since it is not dependent on sunlight to grow, it can grow in very dark environments like in the understory of dense forests. The complex relationship that allows this plant to grow makes propagation difficult.

The Cherokee of North America feature the "pipe plant" in some of their creation stories. The legend states that the plant was named "Indian pipe" due to a group of chiefs quarreling without resolution, while passing a pipe around during the dispute; the Great Spirit then turned the chiefs into the plant, as they should have smoked the sacred pipe after making peace with each other. The plant is said to grow wherever friends have quarreled.

Goodyera pubescens (downy rattlesnake plantain) is a native North American orchid known for its evergreen, basal rosette of dark green leaves with distinctive white veins that resemble rattlesnake skin 🐍
Goodyera pubescens, the downy rattlesnake plantain (also known as Peramium pubescens), is one of the most common orchids native to eastern North America.

Goodyera pubescens flowers in mid July-early September with a small spike inflorescence of between 10 and 57 cylindric flowers. The leaves have the white-green marbling in the form of veins throughout, broadly elliptic to broadly ovate (2.1-6.2 x 1.3–3 cm), with either an acute or obtuse apex. The peduncle (stem that connects the stalk to a floret) is 11–35 cm long. Flowers: Lateral sepals 3.1 - 5.3 mm long with distinct petals of 3.6 - 5.7mm. The petals lip is scrotiform (pouch shaped) 2.5 - 4.2 x 2.2 - 3.5mm in size with the apex reflexed (bent outwards) with a slightly tuberculate (bumpy/rough) outer surface. The inner surface is smoother but has thicker veins throughout. The anthers are inflexed (bent inwards) within a cup-shaped clinandrium (an orchid structure beneath the anther). The white flowers are usually atop a leafless stalk.

Grylloprociphilus imbricator is a woolly aphid native to North America that feeds on the sap of American beech trees. Famously, colonies will rhythmically sway their bodies when threatened, thus earning them the nickname "boogie-woogie aphids." 🤣 youtu.be/FHr9KRqewpU?...

Lilium superbum (Turk's-cap Lily) in extreme abundance 🧡🧡🧡
A striking and native North American wildflower recognized by its dangling, orange, heavily-spotted petals that curl dramatically backwards to form a turban-like shape . It typically thrives in moist forests, swamps, and meadows.A striking and native North American wildflower recognized by its dangling, orange, heavily-spotted petals that curl dramatically backwards to form a turban-like shape .
