Got this from the book seller in George's Arcade today, rare to find it with the original dust cover, and in (reasonably) good condition as well. The 1948 Three Candles press edition of Socialism and Nationalism, with a "Get Well Soon" card inside the back leaf.

While in London I went up to Hampstead to visit the grave of Eva Gore-Booth (suffragette sister of Constance de Markievicz) and her sister Esther Roper. Found it, and in some ways wished I hadn’t it was in a sad state of affairs. A sad neglected headstone in a sad neglected graveyard.

I think one of the hardest elements to get across in any article on James Connolly and the British army will be that the story of his enlistment in the King's Liverpool is based on little more than Captain Robert Monteith picking it because one of its volunteer regiments wore kilts.

In National Archives Kew and found John Connolly ("James Reid"), brother of James, in the muster rolls of the Border Regiment, 1881. His army recruitment file hasn't survived but it appears from when he moved battalions that he enlisted around July 1880, when he was eighteen.

Another day another lost Connolly letter found, this time in an archive in Berlin. It's not catalogued so the archive doesn't even know it has it. I found it just by basic gumshoe research, systemically working through the files.
