no one reads the articles. all of the quotes assume this is because the party is broke because of (spins wheel) whatever that person is mad about today, but the reason they’re scrambling is because they’re trying to run moonshot campaigns in deep red districts they ordinarily would never attempt

I meant “behavioral threshold” not “temporal threshold,” and yeah, “protesting” the campus Jewish students definitely crosses it

Eg, design safeguards are great, but anthropic has no obvious lever to force their deployment. The lever LLM developers *do* have is behavioral influence on the models. So with the headline aimed at behavioral safeguards but the prescription aimed at systems designers/operators, idk who it’s for

Connor Lynch @connorlynch.bsky.social · 5h
b/c, as you pt out, behavioral safeguards still matter for things where harm can flow entirely from communication channels (eg, model-manipulated operator, etc). I also think it would benefit from dividing up the work of safety among responsible actors and more specifically bucketing prescriptions.

the basic thesis seems to be “design + behavioral safeguards are good but if you have to pick just one, design should be it.” On form, I agree it could be shorter. On substance, I don’t think the headline aligns with the thesis,

at some point “anti-Jewish” or “antisemitic” seems like a more appropriate label than “pro-Palestinian” for some of these groups

NATO-member troops*, ie US troops

Connor Lynch @connorlynch.bsky.social · 6h
By muscular countermove I mean something like putting NATO troops into Ukraine—which wouldn’t have worked if NATO members weren’t united behind it and instead had some ready to blame the US for any ensuing Russian invasion after that.

Connor Lynch @connorlynch.bsky.social · 6h
all it is is talk. Biden admin’s push for a muscular NATO countermove to deter the Russian invasion of Ukraine in the first place was rebuffed by Germany et al., whose colossally bad judgment has helped put us all here. They couldn’t lead their own defense w a gun to their head. And there is one.

I realize this tech is new enough that people who are already adults never saw anyone else get bullied for this specific thing in HS, but how does someone not innately understand how deeply pathetic “a fake woman I completely control likes me and is going to marry me” is to brag about

But even if you just accept “craven politicians want personal money,” candidates who win tend to raise more money than candidates who lose
030
Connor Lynch @connorlynch.bsky.social · 8h
There was once a time, and maybe it’s still possible in some states, where money raised for a campaign could just be personally used later. I think this only changed shockingly recently too. Like ~1980s. Leadership PACs also don’t have a ban on personal spending for some reason

but forcing the only path to liability at “you have to make an accusation that carries all these social implications and reqs proving lack of consent” exposes victims to public abuse, puts them potentially on an evidentiary wrong-foot right out of the gate, and shoehorns the story into one pattern
150
Connor Lynch @connorlynch.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
right, and I think in, eg, the context of this Cornell case, there ought to be a path for liability for some of those individual defendants without even asking her to prove lack of consent. whatever way you spin it, their wrongful conduct completely derailed her life
150
Connor Lynch @connorlynch.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
One challenge is that expanded liability, if not approached carefully, can contribute to some of the same social attitudes that socially punish mostly women for perceived deviancy, which imo is bad.
170
Connor Lynch @connorlynch.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
IMO there’s some extremely exploitative and wrongful conduct that is downstream of “chastity as women’s’ virtue; conquest as men’s” that should, in right circumstances, give rise to its own claims without needing to fit into definitions of rape, even tho it also spills into current rape definitions

I think this is basically correct. And I could probably live with it if the people carrying it out took their duties solemnly, soberly, and seriously. But we have pete hegseth, and id prefer we ban it entirely than give anyone like him the chance to indulge their own brutal appetite in our names.

It’s actually interesting to compare how he speaks now with his older 2017 speech. Still disciplined about filler words and you can hear the voice that’s shining through now, but he sounds more like someone trying to emulate Obama’s powerful style than embracing his own www.cnn.com/videos/polit...

He’s a great example of the power of cadence + striking filler pauses and discourse markers. He just pauses and holds when he’s thinking of his next word, and his cadence is just slow enough that it projects a confidence that you’re going to hang on his words.

That doesn’t mean housing programs are bad, but they don’t address the issues that people are actually concerned about when the topic of encampments comes up, and people are (imo quite fairly) suspicious/hostile to the “never ever clear the encampments by force” crowd.
030
Connor Lynch @connorlynch.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
That faulty premise leads to suggestions for programs that are not well calibrated to address needs of those pops. For example, “housing first” absolutely does not mean you can clear an encampment by telling everyone you got them a real place to live. many will refuse and stay put unless forced.

Connor Lynch @connorlynch.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
Advocates often seem to view the most visible homeless populations with the most needs as just as capable of rational, pro-social decision making as everyone else but for a couple changeable circumstances, and it isn’t true.

💯. IMO male-only spaces *can* theoretically be healthy but they generally are not in a social context where they are its members’ dominant mode of social engagement, which is a lot of them and definitely modern frats
