"The transformation element and the poster design appear to reference the politically charged sci-fi film They Live (1988), in which the main character encounters a pair of sunglasses that not only expose the extractive messaging of advertisements but reveal that humanity is being controlled, subdued, and exploited by a secret population of aliens masquerading as people. In the film, it’s later revealed that some humans have accepted monetary bribes to collaborate with the aliens."

The Proto-Indo-European word *gʰóstis apparently meant both "guest" and "host". This peculiar aspect of their culture persists up to the present day, such as in the popular Indo-European show "Saturday Night Live" which every week features a "host" who is in fact a "guest"!

Great discussion of automation *and* platform lengths. Though I think the article is missing some numbers that could really put things in perspective: Link platforms are 120 meters long, three times as long as the Canada Line's (40 meters).

In general-purpose programming, we specify whether we are using a 32-bit (`float`) or a 64-bit (`double`) floating point number, but we p much never specify the share of bits allocated to significand vs exponent 11 bits for exponent is not the best choice for all cases but we just sorta go with it

Only a pair of line number AND station number uniquely identifies a station. Except that when the lines connect, the stations served by both the 1-line and the 2-line will still be uniquely identified by their station numbers alone.

The station numbering system is also terrible. A station number alone does NOT uniquely identify a station, e.g. station 60 could be EITHER Spring District OR Othello!

This explains the very arbitrary-sounding qualification that petitions are only restricted for (future) H-1(b) workers "currently outside the United States". The admin probably thinks they can't legally touch CoS, transfer, & renewal for H-1(b) beneficiaries already lawfully admitted to the US.

A day later, the White House ended up "clarifying" that--contrary to the actual text of the proclamation--this would not be applied to existing H-1(b) holders, only to "the petition".

The Secretary of Commerce (???) is muddying the waters majorly by saying that the fee will be required every year. The executive proclamation does not mention this at all. That said, the order only lasts 12 months, so maybe there'll be a new order demanding $100k for every year from now on.
From ABC News:

“If you’re going to train people, you’re going to train Americans.” Lutnick said on a conference call with reporters. "If you have a very sophisticated engineer and you want to bring them in ... then you can pay $100,000 a year for your H-1B visa.”

Is Trump just rebranding the (existing) EB-5 visa as the "Trump Gold Card"? Is this "contribution" an investment, then (not a direct fee paid to the US treasury)? But also, in the FAQ it says a gold card holder receives "lawful permanent resident status as an EB-1 or EB-2 visa holder" ?????????
From trumpcard.gov:

"What legal classification do I receive as a Trump Gold Card holder?

As appropriately determined by the Department of Homeland Security and subject to availability, an applicant receives lawful permanent resident status as an EB-1 or EB-2 visa holder."

Wait, the cost of the "Trump Gold Card" has apparently gone down to $1 million (from $5 million)! I don't remember any news or announcements about this! And now there's a "Platinum Card" that allows spending 270 days in the US without being subject to US taxes.
From the Trump Gold Card website. Under "Special Benefits." [sic]:

"Trump Gold Card

For a processing fee and, after DHS vetting, a $1 million contribution, receive U.S. residency in record time with the Trump Gold Card."

and

"Trump Platinum Card

Sign up now and secure your place on the waiting list for the Trump Platinum Card. For a processing fee and, after DHS vetting, a $5 million contribution, you will have the ability to spend up to 270 days in the United States without being subject to U.S. taxes on non-U.S. income."

RAI released the televote shares for Italy. Assuming that Italy had a typical vote share for the year (other than for San Marino, where it was essentially voting for itself), I imagine Israel may have won the televote with <20% of the total vote share.

Paul Gosar cited this 2015 article in his proposal to eliminate OPT. WTF! It claims that America is being overrun by hordes of OPT workers but also that hardly any int'l students had heard of OPT. Um... I remember being an int'l student program volunteer in 2016-17. They definitely knew about OPT!!!
"OPT Is a Near-Secret Operation. The AARP lobbyists and researchers are not the only ones who do not know about the OPT programs. In recent years I have, as a volunteer, provided income tax counseling at tax time to graduate students at a major Washington, D.C.-area university; many of the people I saw were both foreign students and in the STEM fields. With one or two exceptions, none of these students were aware of OPT when I talked to them, even though the vast majority were looking forward to working in the United States."

WTF is this article from Forbes?? These are NOT the questions you should be asking!!! You should be asking why on earth the Secretary of Commerce (!!!) claims to have granted lawful permanent residence to 1,000 people! That's not how this works! www.forbes.com/sites/dougme...
From a purely economic perspective, the numbers are compelling. If 200,000 Gold Cards are sold at $5 million each, the resulting $1 trillion could make a meaningful dent in the national debt. Scaling the program to 10 million cards would generate $50 trillion, theoretically erasing the debt entirely and freeing up resources for infrastructure, education, healthcare and other critical investments. However, the program’s reliance on ultra-wealthy individuals raises concerns about the broader implications for economic equity among those seeking to become American citizens. It effectively monetizes U.S. residency, creating a two-tiered system where the wealthy can bypass traditional immigration pathways through the Gold Card, while others face significant barriers.

Another framing that no trad. media source seems to mention: EB-5's have a cap of ~10,000 per year. Trump is apparently planning to raise that number dramatically for the "Golden Card". Exactly how many Golden Cards will be available per year? AFAICT, no one knows and no one has bothered to ask.
CBS News:

Mr. Trump suggested that the the U.S. could "sell maybe a million of these cards, maybe more than that."

At $5 million each, selling 1 million gold cards could raise $5 trillion, he said.

"And if you sell 10 million of the cards, that's a total of $50 trillion," Mr. Trump added. "We have $35 trillion in debt. That'll be nice, so we'll see."
241
Connor Boyle @connorboyle.io · 26/02/2025
OTOH, mainstream media all seem to bury the lede, which is that Trump is apparently changing the ~$1,000,00 *investment* requirement to a *fee*. A lot of people who would've been happy to invest $1,000,000 in a business for an EB-5 green card would probably not pay $5,000,000 outright for a GC!
NY Times article text:

He predicted that the gold card program would be a moneymaker for the government, reasoning that many companies would pay the $5 million fee to bring in skilled workers.

“We’ll be able to sell maybe a million of these cards, maybe more than that,” Mr. Trump said. “If you add up the numbers, they’re pretty good.”
