To be fair, this is actually something people had been making progress on even up until pretty recently. Harvey and Van der Hoeven had gotten it down to O(n log n) in 2020: hal.science/hal-02070778...

Or Ballard actually. Those "Waiting for the Interurban" people are waiting on a train that goes through Ballard?? (Or, they would be if they were standing in the right spot)

Love the idea of riding little loops around Green Lake. Weird to think I'd have to go to Fremont in order to get to Everett

Do you think that it is true that many of these "counterexamples" are at least very easy to verify? E.g. I believe the disproof of the Jacobian conjecture could be checked by a high school AP calculus student

Do you think if, say, Andrew Wiles had first proved the Shimura-Taniyama conjecture, and then it was discovered later by another mathematician that this proves Fermat's last theorem, would the credit for FLT go to the latter mathematician instead of Wiles?

I say this thinking that University Ave on the Green Line would be a better place for a short tunnel, though that is not based on much data and could simply be because I rode there all the time

Connor Boyle @connorboyle.io · 10/09/2026
The problem is that downtown Minneapolis is a terminus for all lines, so most trips won't benefit much from a DT tunnel. Apparently there is an extension planned for the Green Line though, so that could make a tunnel somewhat more useful.

I assume "PRIMES is in P" refers to the AKS primality algorithm, right? Why wasn't it a bigger deal? I've wondered this since reading about it in the book "Schrodinger's Killer App" a few years ago. I'd had no idea primality could be tested in polynomial time before that.

"While unlikely, we cannot rule out that [uncredited researchers' work] helped improve our models" How do we know OpenAI's agents didn't hack their way into Alpöge & Buckmaster's chat logs? Cheating/hacking their way to a solution is famously a thing that OpenAI's agents have done pretty recently!

"Greek words in -ονος are suspected to be of Pre-Greek [i.e. non-Indo-European] origin; cf. also χρόνος and Κρόνος with a typical consonantal variation. This may be the case for θρόνος as well." I suspect Latin "firmus" (whence English "firm") may be a real cognate: en.wiktionary.org/wiki/firmus

TP usage is the biggest factor in horizontal drainage performance yet some plumbing codes discourage bidets by assuming they contribute to additional loads to the plumbing system, whereas this should be the opposite. Bidets should have negative Drainage Fixture Units actually (not a thing…yet).

More and more people feel the need to clarify that they're talking about *direct* descendants, but nobody can seem to agree what an "indirect descendant" is
Screenshot of Google Ngram graph of term "direct descendant" vs. "indirect descendant". The former is in wide and increasing use, while the latter is consistently very near zero.

Given the number of roof collapses worldwide from inadequatly designed storm drainage systems, I wouldn’t want to be inside a building with a downspout nozzle throttling the outlet this much. Also, this point would have landed better if it wasn’t made with AI generated images.

This may ruffle some feathers, but I'm just gonna come out and say it: "hydrogen bomb" is a dumb name for the thing that it describes; it sounds like a chemical bomb using hydrogen gas and an oxidizer. Maybe it should be called the "deuterium bomb"!

"nontrivial" should be "nonzero". The statement is also more likely if "groundbreaking" is taken to simply mean "novel"

Well, I imagine there are many possible ways for your experience to be true at the same time that my statement is true. Maybe the cranks are ignoring the good results they get as a side-product of using LMs to generate their crankery!

Here's a thought that makes my stomach drop: There's probably a nontrivial number of cranks using ChatGPT or Claude lately and actually getting real groundbreaking results in math, CS, or maybe even physics.

The article mentions this:
Screenshot of article:

"The transformation element and the poster design appear to reference the politically charged sci-fi film They Live (1988), in which the main character encounters a pair of sunglasses that not only expose the extractive messaging of advertisements but reveal that humanity is being controlled, subdued, and exploited by a secret population of aliens masquerading as people. In the film, it’s later revealed that some humans have accepted monetary bribes to collaborate with the aliens."

The Proto-Indo-European word *gʰóstis apparently meant both "guest" and "host". This peculiar aspect of their culture persists up to the present day, such as in the popular Indo-European show "Saturday Night Live" which every week features a "host" who is in fact a "guest"!
